View Full Version : The movie "Le Mans", and why you should all buy it

Now, can someone tell me where you'd be able to hear the sound of a Porsche 917K howl at full bore? Here's what I've come up with:

1) Attend a vintage event where they'd *****-foot an original 917K round some track.

2) Buy or steal a 917K, buy some track time for some track and then have at it.

3) Travel back in time and somehow become a factory Porsche driver.

4) Buy the movie "Le Mans".

I personally think the last is the most cost effective and safest. And along with that 917 howl, you get a great movie. What a bargin!

The movie Le Mans was shot in 1970 (or was it '71?). It stars Steve McQueen and a couple of French people. There's really not much of a plot, but that's really what makes it interesting. I was suprised how involved the sub-plots were. For instance, there's a driver who is driving for Porsche and is about to retire for his wife and kids. He doesn't seem to want to race at all. At the last minute, before he goes back in for the last eight minutes or so of the race, he gets replaced by McQueen's character. He's shocked, and upset. His wife asks him that it's all the same anyways, and he sort of responds like it was the coward's way out. That was just my opinion. I'm sure if 100 people watched it, they'd have 100 different opinions on what really happened. It's great!

Then there's the racing sequences. I think alot of the footage was real Le Mans footage. It's breath taking. The camera angles were all very break through, even for today. The racing scenes were extremely intense, and they put me on the edge of my seat for a good part of the movie. Not once has any movie ever done that to me. Then you have the sounds. Oh lordy, the sounds. Thank god my dad bought a home theater system. It's not big, nor fancy, but it can be very loud. We turned it up just to our limits of hearing, and we both loved it. You felt like you were there. Every gear change, every fly-by. Everything was timed and matched perfectly.

That's my review for this movie. Now, I've seen just about every car movie under the sun. Nothing compares to this movie. They don't even come close. For sheer excitement (and a bit of history), you must get this movie. Good luck finding it at any stores (or rental stores for that matter). I went to a couple of best buys and a couple of blockbusters with no success. I had to order it online, which was actually a really good idea. It wasn't expensive in the least.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=5374944&type=product&id=47806

As you can see, it's $11 on bestbuy.com. Shipping wasn't much, so it totalled about $14 for me. However, I suggest you pay a little more for next day shipping. My movie took well over a week, and I just don't have that paitence.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008DDRX/qid=1139362362/sr=1-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-1727741-3427154?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130

Amazon has it for even cheaper. I don't know about the shipping though. Either way, you guys need to get this movie. It's really not that expensive, and it's the essential car guy movie.

Come on, you know you want it.

Wow. I didn't think anyone would react that quickly. You made a wise choice, my good man. Bullit was also an awesome movie, but it's not as much as a car movie. Steve McQueen was a pro-racer himself. "Le Mans" was really a dream of his. I mean, McQueen was obviously an amazing actor, but from what I've seen, he just acts more comfortable in Le Mans. He was perfect for his role.

And you're a Porsche fan! You'll love this movie. The 917's just sound wild. There's really no other word. I mean, the Ferrari's sound cool and untamed, but the Porsche's were just so much more insane.

I've read about Le Mans before and they say it's a great movie. Also in one section they used a full size remote control replica ferrari for one of the scenes and the control went crazy and it turned round and went speeding towards the cameraman at 200k/mh. He escaped but only just.

There are tons of car related movies, but why wouldn't you be able to watch this? It's G rated, which means no cursing, no sex scenes, no violence. Just straight up racing.

I thought it was a broken toe. Damn, that's even worse. He was probably one of the best actors of the era. Hell, he's probably one of the best actors ever. He's definetly my favorite. Why? He's not an over actor. That's all you see in modern movies. Over acting keeps your attention and is exciting, but there's no depth to the character. McQueen was a master at making all of his characters somewhat of a mystery. He was brilliant.

To all who don't know, he died at the age of 50 in 1980 due to a rare form of lung cancer. Such a terrible loss. A great actor, a great father, and a great racer. He was something that's not seen in modern Hollywood. He was an artist and an enthusiast. He loved both acting and racing (both motorcycles and cars), and he didn't just view them as a way of making money.

Alright, I'm done ranting.

Rant on, Mopar68.

A year ago, I answered the question of best car movie with LeMans; followed by Gran Prix (John Frankenheimer), Vanishing Point, and Gumball Rally. Only momentarily is there any accelerated replay in these movies. Alledgedly, LeMans was filmed in excess of 160 mph; Gumball Rally above 125.

LeMans is a docudrama, light on the drama. Can any car fan not cringe at the destruction of a 917 and a 512? Can any racing fan (or racer) not agonize over the slow/stop-motion replays of those 2 crashes? Ferrari collector/movie driver Paul Pappalardo lost his leg in the filming of this movie. As a movie, it's as close to the real deal as we are likely to get.

Steve McQueen was a friend of karate champ/stuntman? Chuck Norris. McQueen got him into acting. Norris quoted McQueen years later: "If you don't say anything for a long time; what you say will be more important". It worked for Steve McQueen. It didn't work for Chuck Norris... when he's not kicking some bad guy upside the head; he's boring.

Recently I answered the question of the best sounding 12 cyl engine with the Porsche 917 sans turbo(s). I have seen/heard a few at vintage races. In 1971, Milt Minter drove the Vasek Polak Racing 917/PA spyder at the Road Atlanta Can-Am race against Team McLaren. The car sounded LOUDER when it was 100 yards past you on the back straight; when the pulses from 2 4-inch exhaust collectors came closer to being in phase. There were no db limits back then. I was too young/smart/cool/stupid to wear earplugs; I had to drop cam and slap ears after it came by.

Many times, me and a friend came (100 miles) home from an IMSA Camel GT race; put the LeMans tape (EP from broadcast/long dead) in; FF 14 or so so minutes; patch to the stereo; and crank it up at the start. The first 2 laps (before the goofy, jazzy music comes in) are music to any race fan's ears.

-----

PS. From "The Hunter"
Jordy: What's that?
Papa: A stun gun (beanbag gun).
Jordy: What's it do?
Papa: It ruins their day.
Jordy: I'll stay in the car.
Papa: You stay in the car (that he's handcuffed to...).

We figured out that none of the main actors say anything for the first 38 minutes of the movie. But they didnt have to say anything the entire movie if they didnt want to.

See, I told you. I think it'd ruin the movie if there was too much talking. Like I said before, the lack of dialouge creates some serious depth and mystery. Very cool I think.

He died because he had breathed a few silos of tobacco and a few break pads worth of asbestos.
Cool movie, have owned it for a while. Lots of people died during the making with McQueen describing the whole thing as a bloodbath.
