View Full Version : Launching Off Line
Dec 16, 2005, 5:53 AM
I've been trying to practice launching my car in case i ever race, also, just to learn how to properly push my car faster. my car has 9000rpm so i wanna know what is a good place to launch my car at, yet be safe enough to not mess up my clutch. i need to hear some proper techniques and tips on how to get a good launch off the line. ive only been driving stick for a month and a half now...so im still learning.

what kinda car you got?

A 9000 RPM redline? All that comes to mind is a Honda S2000.

You want some tire spin, but not too much.
Really, the best "general" rule of thumb (that I know of), is to rev it to the lower third of your peak torque curve, and let the clutch out, don't completely pop it, but let it out quickly. And then wait for good traction while feathering the accelerator before you floor it.
Also, don't mis-shift. =P

Just below the rpm where your torque peaks. What kinda car? 9000 rpm redline? Or 9000 is how high the tach goes?

This is really something that you'd need to figure out yourself. It's impossible for someone to tell you exactly what speed your engine needs to be at to launch unless they have the same car (which wasn't given). I know my bike gets the best starts at about 6500rpm with a 14,000rpm redline. So, I'm thinking like, 3000rpm. But that's a really big guess.

Could be an RX8, too.

you just need to do a few practices but the power should just ( and thats a big just) overwhelm the tyres.

If its a v8 try launching around 2000rpm, if its v6 try around 3 and a 4 around 3500. Those are just points based on estimated torque you have to play with it from there.

i have an S2000...my torque is only like 140ft lbs...so im thinking maybe 3500 or 4500. but i still dont wanna mess up my clutch...so i wanna know almost every safe launching technique. im not gonna go crazy and do a high rpm clutch drop...but i just wanna get off the line quicker. i mean once the car starts going im good with my shifting...but in 1st is where i need most work.

Thats where most people need work... that and speed shifting into third

Id rev at or around 4,000 rpms..

Start at 2000 rpm, launch, then try it at 2500, launch, etc... until you find the right launch speed for your car

You have the car You know better (how we should know???)... it's easy to understand the feeling of a good launch.

because ive only started driving stick a little over a month ago. and my launching technique has A LOT to do with me not knowing where to launch it at.

practise is the best way to get better launch....
