The British "CAR" magazine did an article on car designs that have been stolen, can anyone think of any other cars that look similar? and if so which is nicer?

Does it mean Lexus copied it from Hyundai? I don't think so

So Hyundai found pictures of sketches of the Lexus IS and incorporated the rear light design into their Sonata, about two years before the IS was released?
Nice try mate, but admit it, you got it wrong.

You sure mate? The Sonata was released early last year in Korea. Lexus IS is being released, when? Late this year? So by this simple reasoning, it's logical to say that the Sonata was designed about a good 6 months before IS designers even put pen to paper.

The sonota closely resembles the honda accord in the rear more than the Lexus IS
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/2500/hondaaccordhybrid6qb.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
and the Lexus IS gets it's styling from the LFS concept
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/8347/lfs27lp.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
All cars have similar styling cues you can't really say it is totally ripped off. When Mercedes introduced the W140 S class, the trunk had a lip that slightly curved up, now look at most cars sold they have this too.
The new design trend in automotive design: pronounced tail lights that have bumpers recessed into the body.

I'm sorry..but BMW does copy people..
The Z4 copied the old corvette in a huge way..
Chris bangle pretty much eliminated BMW's individuality...
Back in the day they could be "called" copies..Considering alot of cars looked like boxes...
but that wouldn't be fair to say at all..

yeah there is a company called Chery, they made this car called the Chery QQ and it was a carbon copy of the Daewoo Matiz. Chery wants to enter the US market but GM took them to court claiming Chery sounds to close to Chevy, now Chery has to make a new name for the US market.

Yeah, I have to agree. The 8-series is definetly on par with any aston martin or front-engined ferrari I've ever seen.
And as for companies copying other companies, I think Acura copied Honda when they made the NSX. They both look so similar! They even have the same name!!!

850 CSI 0-60 in 5.9 1/4 mile at 14.4@100.5mph .89g skidpad. Not bad for a car from the early 90s
Driftster
Oct 03, 2005, 7:21 PM
850 CSI was also very very limited..and cost nearly 100,000 dollars...
The 850Ci..and 850i both ran roughly 6.3's to 6.9's depending on transmission (manual was also very very rare)
Now the 8 series was going untill 1997....Which isn't very early 90's...but what they hey.
now..The E30 M3 did the 0-60 in 6.3
The E34 M5 did 0-60 in sub 6's....
the E24 M5 did 0-60 in 6.2 or less....
That isn't impressive at all..
especially for a nearly 400HP V12....
Thlam
Oct 03, 2005, 8:09 PM
The 850CSi was developed by M and many consider it an M car, was first introduced at Frankfurt show in 91. Production of the 8 may have ended in 97 but hey! that has no relevance to anything.
The cost of 100,000? well thats similar to asking why somebody would buy a Porsche when they can get a corvette Z06 for way cheaper; i'll just leave it at that, no need to go further...
A Jaguar XJS V12 ran a 6.7 0-60
A Ferrari 456( a car that more than costs twice as much) runs a 5 second 0-60
the 850 was never meant to be a performance car it was more of a touring car, but it does have decent performance and I would not consider it a pig.
Driftster
Oct 03, 2005, 8:19 PM
that has NOTHING to do with that..because people buy porsches when they want porsches..
people buy bimmers when they want bimmers..
People couldbuy any of the other M bimmers..and get just as fast of a ride...for 1/2 the price..
it makes sense when it's brand/brand..
but it makes NO Sense when it's inside the ranks

what does engine placement have to do with anything, yet again you have proven to make unrelated points in your arguement, I never even said anything about engine placement even If i did it wouldn't matter as they are all Front engined cars.
The reason I compared the XJS with the 8 series, instead of the M3 and M5 is because the XJS was a DIRECT COMPETITOR with the 8 series back in the day. The BMW 8 series is a large touring car, just like the Jaguar XJS, and also like the more expensive and better Ferrari 456 which is also a touring car.
