Ok, today my friend got his mom's car because i was at the 0 on gas, and his bravada was at 0 on gas as well. So since the car is pretty much done as a car, we decided lets mess with it. I always wondered what the 1, 2, 3, did to the car ( on the shift-knob ). So he put it on the 1, and went off, I noticed the RPMs fly, they reached high and did not shift. So I told him to stop, which we did. Then I was like if you try that, and put it on the 2, and then on the three. Sure enough we did it, and it worked somewhat like manual. as you shift up, from one to two to three, it shifted on gears, and the rpms dropped of course. So I was like wtf. i never knew...
So, now what is this? Is it for what we did or did we *** up the tranny? LoL.

It's used for bad conditions like snow. If you're stuck in the snow and you begin to accelerate there's less traction and thus your engine starts changing gears. This way you can put it in first, keep it in first and accelerate hard while keeping traction and avoid spinning you wheels.

1, 2, and 3 are just lower gears. You can go from one to three to drive if you WANT to, but it's probably not great for your transmission and it's not faster at all. One thing it's good for is if you want a sudden burst of speed, drop it to 2 and press on the gas...it's almost like a downshift on a manual. It also helps to navigate in icy or other hazardous conditions.
Hope that helps.

i think 1,2,3 are also used to climb hills because in those gears u get the most torque.sorry for not being clear but im half assleep so(been working my a$$ of these last 2 days.)

my bros got L,2,3,4,D
its basically u dont want the car to shift gears, so u keep it on the lower gears for higher rpm i.e more torque
helps in dunes, snow etc
my bro uses it to reduce speed, he just leaves the accelerator & shift to 3 or 2 & the speed reduces, basically not using the brakes
& it supposedly does not screw the transmission
i remember puttin my dads sunny in 1, i revd teh car till 7, red started at 61/2, so i freaked out :D

HAHAHA. My Dad's friend does that and he told me about it when ym dad got a speeding ticket, but I never used it. Thought I would *** up my tranny.

I laugh at all the idiots that treat their autos like manual transmissions, if you treat it like a real manual...just wait for the repair bills when you have to fix that auto transmission don't shift gears when you are driving you will ruin the transmission!

Those gears are for all the above, and originally used for pulling. They can also be used as an engine brake.

There's Manhattan, KS.
If that was sarcasm I didn't catch it...

No sarcasm, it just strikes me funny. Next time someone tell me they're from Manhattan I'll know to ask them "Which state?".

The ability to shift gears by choice doesn't make a it a manual transmission. Manual transmissions use clutches and friction plates, automatic transmissions use torque converters. A torque converter transfers the power through a fluid which, while giving the car a smoother ride, also drains power. This is why automatic cars get rated lower on fuel economy and performance. You also can find manual transmissions that shift for you or let you shift via paddles, like the DSG or SMG.

1 = the gearbox only uses 1st gear
2 = the gearbox only uses the 2 first gears (1st, 2nd)
3 = > > > > > > 3 first gears (1, 2, 3)

Thanks but I think almost 99% of this forum knows all the torque converters and clutches. I just wondered wtf was the 1, 2, 3, and is it ok to use them like we did?

Yeah it's fine, just don't do it all the time or your transmission will wear out much faster. And don't try to use it as a "performance boost" because it's not any faster.

Sometimes I shift it all the way down without noticing until I notice the car not switching gears.

Yeah I've done that too. Scared the **** out of me though, because it was by complete accident and I thought something was horribly wrong with my transmission haha.
