what do you mean by best rally..like best production car that you can go out and rally or like the professional rally?

I said Audi. They were soo good that they were kicked out because the Quattro all wheel drive system was considered too much of an advantage. That's when you know you're good.

I agree 100%, and don't forget the Lancia Intergrale's they may not have looked the best, but boy did they get the job done.

ah well it's all good. I love the Lancia Stratos though, one of my favourite cars of all time. Originally convinced by Pininfarina, beautiful lines. It was one of the last non-4wheeldrive cars to win before the introduction of the Quattro by Audi, if my memory serves me correct.

It does. Only the Lancia 037 Rally and the Fiat 131 Abarth fill the lapse between the Stratos and the 4x4's: Audi Quattro and Lancia Integrale.

Here is a few stats that might help in your choices or reconsider those already made. Bear in mind the title of the thread...

CAR MAKER (Number of World Rally Championships)

LANCIA (11)
PEUGEOT (5)
SUBARU-FIAT-TOYOTA (3)
AUDI-CITROEN-ALPINE RENAULT (2)
PORSCHE-TALBOT-MITSUBISHI-FORD (1)

Sports are judged by results and not by personal preferences.
No contest here: LANCIA is the undisputed best rally car manufacturer.

Thanks. I knew it was somewhere around the time just before the Quattro. And pertaining to your last post... I couldn't agree more.

Wrong. The Audi Quattro and other cars of that generation were banned because rallying had become very dangerous. Too much horsepower, very small frames, much too light, very high speeds...many deaths, both drivers and spectators.
FIA changed the rules and those magnificent cars were gone.

I couldn't get any overall pics of the "street" Delta S4 at Turin in '86 due to the hordes of drooling carnuts. Tube frame, M4WD, carbon-fiber shell, with a backseat mounted super and turbocharged 1.8L 4-cyl with a modest 450 hp makes me salivate.

As long as it's not mostly uphill, the S4 is a potential winner in RS2.

It was basicly between Lancia and Audi. Lancia in my oppinion made the greatest rally car of all time...the Stratos. It was so much ahead of its time. Audi offcourse started the 4WD revolution.

I'm gonna say Lancia still, and it was the Startos that made me vote for it.

Oh i've sat in both the EJ20 and 2.5 WRX and STi....

Neither of which were comfortable..
neither of which had eithe A: a nice ride or B: a performance oriented ride..

it was right uncomfrotably in the middle of the 2...

and the constant buzzing of the 3 cyl sound that engine puts out with exhaust was not only tickeling my ear drum...it was just gross sounding..

but yeah, i've sat in my share of scoobies..
1 while he was doing a launch and dropped his transmission..
Man did I laugh
