Hey guys. I have´nt posted in a long time due to school work, work work, vacation, and doctors appointments but I´m here to ask another question. After turning over my 2006 Honda lease to my mother I´m again looking for a car to get from point A to B. Im looking for anything with a manual tranny.
Price range: CHEAP CHEAP but yet reliable.
Any and all recommendations are welcome.
Thank you,
Danny

Dude, anything made by Toyota and Honda in the nineties is a good bet.
My calls? 6th gen Accord or any Prelude/Celica...your choice. They're good cars to drive, and they'll collectively last 100 years or more.
If you want to go fast, get a Mustang or a Camaro.
Also, what's CHEAP in your eyes?

My instincts tell me that a Honda Fit is the perfect car. It's cheap, reliable, yet fun to drive. It's handling is phenomenal, and it does come with a manual transmission.
VTEC dreams could continue the list of what it is like.....
EDIT: what a coincidence...
Well, if you want used, there's really a large variety to choose from. Just go look up any recalls before purchasing a car....

This is my first time shopping for a used car so i really dont know wat to look for. I´ve only driven stick once so i figure something like this is a good 2-3 year practice beater car.

As good as newer Hyundai's are, that one isn't.
So, for 1200 bucks you could definitely find an old Civic or Corolla. My first car was a 1500 dollar 1992 Civic Si hatchback with a 5 speed. It was a great first car, and I never had any problems with it.
Doing a quick search on cars.com in Rochester, NY I've found an old 4th Gen Accord for 2 grand. They're great cars...I had a friend who had one that ran for 600,000 (yes, 600 thousand) miles. It's even got a 5 speed.
For another 500 bucks, a couple of EK Civic's pop up, one with a 5 speed.
Either would be a fine first car.
Try cars.com and also autotrader.com. Those are the best places that I've found to get a car online.

It isnt going to take you 2-3 years to learn how to drive stick. If you drive it every day for a week, you'll probably have it down pat. So I wouldnt make a decision on a beater car based on the fact that you have only driven stick once.

that Hyundai isnt good at all. As everyone here said, buy something Japanese: honda, toyota, mazda or what ever else.

I learned stick on an E46 M3.. then a week later drove a manual 997 911 with 700 miles on it..
Every car is different. You could drive the Hyundai for 10 years and still have a learning curve when switching to something nicer.

I learned to drive stick in a 800 mile round trip drive from my home to BGSU and back home again.
I bought the car, left the dealership lot to go visit friends back at college, and had to drive home. Cleveland rush hour was very sink or swim, but I made it.
If you find a car you like go for it. You will not do serious damage to the car in the first couple of weeks unless your just stupid and decide to intentionally mess up the transmission.

Like most people said a used toyota or honda. Also consider a chevy cavaliar or a ford escort or maybe even a chrysler sebring.

Did anyone else notice that picture of the Hyundai Accent that shows the tire appears to have an off-road tread, or is that just me?
Anyway, Hyundais are no good unless you get the newest stuff. Normally I would recommend Subarus, but in your price range it would be tough to find one that wasn't as good as scrap.
From there I have to agree: Forget the Accent, shop for Hondas. I'd focus on Civics if I were you. More fun available at lower costs.

Yeah, go for a Toyota. My friend has one for almost 7 years now and it's still in good condition

wow sorry I haven't responded to this post, just been really busy with school. Thank you for all the help and no I have not decided what car to buy. They rezoned my apartment complex as "on campus" so I cant drive to school anyway. I decided to hold off on a car for a while and just deal with the bus. I'll keep all your ideas in mind, but I do not plan on getting a new car until after graduation.

You can't drive to school if you live too close? Lame!
I had kids driving to school who lived down the block from our school.

I don't know about you guys, but with 16 bucks I fill up my tank. Plus I get 35-40 MPG city and 40-50 MPG on the highway...Now that gas prices are down nobody cares about small cars...but if you have ever been outside the US you would know that compact cars are very common and it's about time the US gets used to compact cars. You don't have to save money! Keep on driving your gas guzzlers, but please stop complaining every time you go to the gas station.

I complain when gas prices are high for no reason. But then again.. everyone should be. That's the only way they will go back down.

It actually goes down is when the demand for gas is lower. They don't give a f*ck about us, if we start spending less money on gas they will have to lower the price so we start buying from them again.

Actually, you don't have a damn clue why gas prices were high, but you can believe what you want.
As many times as I've explained this, I guess one more wouldn't hurt. Gas prices are high because of the a holes on wall street that bid up the price of gas based on what *might* happen in the future. The thing is, generally when they bid the price up, they make money, and not vice versa. They play it like a stock, because well it is one. Every time the stock goes up, they **** their pants. The problem is, when that little chart goes up, from say 50-100 dollars, we pay for it dearly. There's not some guy saying oh my goodness demand is going up prices should go up.. because no matter what you say, there was not an increase in demand of 200% in the month or two that gas prices sky rocketed, or a 200% decrease in demand that the prices plummeted. There's some idiots at NYSE that see we are going to hit a recession, and try to F us in the A a little bit harder. Gas prices go up, hurting our economy even more. This is not do to Exxon, Dutch Royal, etc. This is due to the price per barrel being bid up before the oil hits the market. The guys on wall street make a little extra money from essentially "betting" on the stock, while the oil companies make $1500 per second.. literally.
The government is capable of stepping in and stopping this, but they really don't seem to mind. Exxon alone made $100+ billion last year, 20+ billion of which was spent on taxes, whether legitimate or pay outs. Oil future bidding has gotten out of control in the last couple of years, and the "no limitation" rule has become severly abused, which is apparent when gas prices can rise or fall $2.00 within a couple of weeks.

Oil/gas prices will dip again if the Stoopid pirates stop asking for ransom and put the tankerload up for bid, LOL!
"Captive" imports; those rebadged under a different dealer network have always been treated as ******* children. As soon as the dealers stop selling them; they become orphan bastards. Examples? Real Opels sold by Buick. "Opel by Isuzus" sold by Buick (Opel Kadett/Holden Gemini). Mitsus sold as Dodge Colts & Conquests. Walk into one of these dealer parts department asking for parts a few years out and you would need a gun or "contagious HIV" tattoo on your forehead to wake them up!
Geo Metro by Suzuki? I wouldn't go there. There may be a cult following for a non-stealworthy car in Zoo Yawk; but there were just not enough of them sold to be worth serious aftermarket parts support. Car & Driver actually did a comparison test between a new one and an older Corolla. They basically summarized that the Toyota was more car easier to service that would last longer. New Zusukis may be good cars; but I always remember that 3-wheel Cushman garbage carts had 3-cyl Geo motors...
-----
Did somebody say S70 Volvo? One of the 3 brothers/owners of my employer foisted his daughter's '02 S70 off on us @ <200K. Nice, solid ride. It reminds me of Audis I worked on. The A/C and half the pwr window switches don't work; and NOBODY has any parts except the dealer!
I doubt there are 20 people on the planet that know more about auto paint/refinishing than my boss; but he has proven to be uneducable as to transportation/maintenance economics. I argued 2 years ago that he should PAY the money to FIX all the crap wrong with the V. and SELL IT to some South Metro ATL Social Climber (with CASH)! He could have done so and bought two(2!) decade-old Accords with 1/2 (1/3?) the mileage of the one I drive. Better mileage @ <1/4 the maintenance costs. The decrepid Volvo basically functions as a taxi to get one decrepid outside salesman between home and work.
-----
Some older Mazdas used a stoopid separate-bearing setup on the front wheels (as did some "pseudo-domestic Ford EXTORTS). Many Hondas (such as my company '96 Accord) used a "trapped"/behind the hub brake rotor. Buy a Toyota. Pull the wheel/unbolt the caliper bracket/swap the "hat" rotor/install the wheel/hit the road. It's that simple.
