Why is it that the cadillac escalade, which is 50k is more expensive to insure than, say, a bugatti veyron?

You can pretty much guarantee that the insurance rates on those four vehicles are inflated so high because of their target demographic - ie the stereotyped idiots who buy/drive/crash them.

How much for a 2006 Ford Mustang GT V8 for a 21 year old for no more than 10,000 miles a year :p

Cant your local insurance provide you a rider that allows travel on American roads?

Ouch for Subaru... I've seen the Impreza on several lists including MSN's top ten most expensive cars to insure last year, but my insurance isn't too outrageous on the WRX and I'm only 20... so I don't see it.

I'm guessing these could be determined by the following... Cost for insurance relative to vehicle cost, or cost of insurance as a whole..... I'm not sure I heard this on the radio aswell

I would hope it's something along those lines since the RSX and tC made the list, too. I never figured the tC would be expensive to insure. It's a pretty harmless car.
Could this also have to do with how likely the owners are to modify the cars? I know more than half of all WRXs I see on the road have been modified to have a full-exhaust, at minimum. Obviously RSXs and tCs are popular tuner cars... especially those Scions for teens. This leaves the Escalade, which is driven by gangsters. :p

Escalades are likely to be vandalized or wrecked, that I understand.... The wrx is probably for the drivers being idiots who speed everywhere and think they're cars are offroad machines which they aren't they're just better for dirty/rain/snowy roads than other cars.... The rsx and tc, are likely for the people speeding around in em

no, our insurance only covers travel in Europe with a UK registered car that I own.
If I managed to get a UK company to insure it, I would have to export one of my cars out there for the drive.
This is why I need to get US insurance, because the US is so isolated compared to the rest of the world when it comes to driving, it is very hard to get cover in the US for a reasonable cost :(

Just don't crash! That way, you won't need insurance :D Oh and don't get pulled over for speeding either....
...in a Mustang....
...yeah on second thought you're definitly going to need insurance.
If you want I could call up an insurance place or two and ask what kind of rates I could expect for an out of country person to get vehicle insurance for...a month? a week? 72 hours?

this is exactly what is going on here. in the northeast subarus are extremely popular for their winter capabilities, and statistically the most popular car is going to have the most idiots. wrx and sti drivers, if this is included in the "impreza" category are also 90% ultra aggressive young kids. rsx and tc are the same thing. i've never seen an rsx, in my own experience, that wasnt owned by a 18-24 year old kid with shades and gel in his hair... tcs are marketed at the tuner crowd and again are extremely popular for young aggressive male drivers.
escalades are relatively expensive, but 90% of drivers i see in the northeast are soccer moms who have no idea how to drive/park the things. because it's a relatively expensive car, even a fender bender is going to exceed the deductible and increase your rates. there is probably a high rate of theft because of the desirability, but that isnt a problem in NH.

I pay 168EUR a year for my moped. :p Here all the aggresive kids drive old VR6's and GTI's and brag they can do 100km/h under 5sec. and get up to 260km/h in a stock one...YEAH RIGHT. EVO's or WRX's are extremely rare down here, so are Supra's or RX7's.

Ok then, international insurance is not my forte.
One word ... state farm insurance. Google them and speak with them about your options. I'll actually post some details tomorrow, right now, its late and Im heading to bed.
State farm, is the best hands down. Reasonable, and more important, if you need them, they are RIGHT ON TOP of things. Not the cheapest, but, you drive lotus right? Thats not the cheapest, just one of the best.
Just for grins, I'll post up some details of what I find out this week..

that would be really useful thanks, i'm looking for 3 months cover. So a monthly payment scheme would probably be best!

Yes, I am experiecned in driving Lotus and other performance cars (although that doesnt help much in the UK for insuring anything)
Anything is useful for me, thanks Evo and LSixer, much appreciated for any assistance!!
Typical questions asked in the UK are these, so i'll answer them on here incase they are asked:
date of birth 17 July 1987 (21)
No driving offences
No criminal offences
car will be used for social and pleasure only, not commuting
annual mileage up to 7,000 miles [allowing for a few detours on my trip :D]
no additional drivers [at this point]
place of birth: Kingston-Upon-Thames, United Kingdom
UK citizen [obviously :p]
I think thats it :p
Thanks again, really appreciative :D
I'll take a look at the site as well, see what I can get from it :)

^ State Farm's biggest competitor is American Family - you can cross shop those two.
Also, for sh*ts and giggles, there is Progressive and Esurance. You can buy policies on-line from both of these companies. I haven't heard anything good nor bad about these two companies. My take is that you just get bare-bones coverage from these companies and it just allows you show proof of insurance in states where insurance is mandatory.

Haha... that's exactly what I was thinking as I read the post before yours. That commercial is so ridiculously annoying... and with CGI about 15 years after its time.
