If the fuel prices are enough to piss you off, here we go back to the Jimmy Carter era!

some of us learned to drive when the speed limit was 55 mph, and gas was $1.00 a gallon;)

I was right there in 1981! Gas at a Buck was fine, but the Double-Nickle to and from college (1983) was brutal.

Well not all cars are geared to be most gas efficient at 55..

Lol my caddi's most gas efficient at 73mph....

So i stay in that area..

What is the highest speed limit in the U.S.? Here that's 120km/h or aprox 75mph I think.

its 80 MPH in Michigan on the interstate I believe. At least on I-75 between Toledo and Detroit its 80.

**** IF they do that, they better make the minimum speed limit 50 MPH. I am getting tired of getting stuck by jackasses driving 40 MPH in a 55 zone.........

It wouldnt work.

Not in most areas where there is heavy traffic. They said back in 1974 80% of the population went above 55 mph. Today most people on the interstates and highways around here do 75-80 mph, and the speed limit is 65 mph. When they get to construction, and it drops to 55 mph, they are still doing 75-80 mph, some back it off to 70 mph.

Personally, I dont think I could keep it at 55-60 mph on the interstate. It's hard enough to keep it below 85 mph.

If the animal lovers up in Alaska would just stop complaining and let us drill for oil there, as well in other places, we would all be a lot happier.

Through Montana it used to be infinite, but I believe because some guy got pissed off because someone pulled him over in his Camaro doing 85 that they dropped their vague as hell law that basically said, if it's nice out, no cars are around, and you have the car to do it, drive whatever you want.

I drove a 66 GTO in high school, and loved those three carbs.
In the back row of the school parking lot we had my goat, a 67 chevelle SS, a buick GSX, a 68 firebird, a 69 road runner, a 68 mustang GT/CS (the little sister of the guy with the 67 SS),a 67 mustang GT, a 69 chevelle,, and a 67 olds 442.
The mustangs were the only two with small blocks. We did not worry about gas back then.......It is funny, I have to drive by there regularly. The gas station right up the road from the school closed when a new shopping center opened. The sign for gas at $1.30 a gallon is still up.....I remember being pissed off when it got that high;)

I say we just drill for more oil and let the left-wing cry into it's imported bottled vitamin water about it. Evidently they're fine with it if we pay horrendous amounts per gallon. Thats part of their plan...to reduce our expectations of American life until we (the taxpaying commoners) all end up living in identical little cottages wearing all natural Jimmuh Carter brand sweaters by a small and sensible campfire to stay warm.

To quote Jay "Well F*ck that."

In Bahrain its 100km/h, thats 60 mph :|. And it's just the one long highway that we have. it's not long. Actually, it's very short. Everywhere else in the country, the highest you can go is 80km/h.

i dunno what my jeep was geared to be most fuel efficeint at, but nowadays if I'm going 35 on flat land I can cruise a just a tad above 1k rpms. only at 35. next gear up will range from 1.8 to redline, and I normally cruise around 2k rpms at 65 mph.

if there were no red lights in city driving gas wouldnt be such an issue for me, lol. I practically idle at 35

I heard that in general you use 20% more fuel to drive at 120km/h instead of 100. What's the rpm at when you do 73mph?

Smart cars are the biggest scam since the word "scam" was invented. They are rated at 36 mpg, on 91 octane gasoline. I had a fully loaded 2003 Honda Civic that would get over 40 mpg on the highway. That Smart Fortwo is a reverse status symbol: it screams "don't blame me for the high gas prices." Basically, it is just the latest trend in the automotive world.

Question to the members:

Lets assume that everyone could outfit their cars, with a autopilot device, so when on highways you could actually let go of the controls and just read. Now this is only for highway use, through the city you retake control. Now would people be fine doing 55mph on the highway if everyone is doing 55, and you can then sit back and do what ever????

Or what about if you just outfit your car to have an RF sensor that the minute it sees highway use it hits 55mph and stays there, that way everyone will be doing 55, and it should minimize traffic. Would that work for you guys??

any of them?

People would disengage them. I for one...would disengage it probably. Also, how are you going to outfit every single car that is already out there? I guess you could make it mandatory that every vehicle that is registered MUST get these sensors put in or else you'll have to pay a hefty fine every month or year or something.

However, there are definite pros, that MIGHT outweigh the cons on this one:

PROS:
1) On highways where there is even the slightest bend, the average traffic speed WILL pick up. People can't drive and dear god if anyone breaks down and pulls off to the side of the road the speeds drops to 10 mph so everyone can see. This would stop them from doing that.
2) Old people will now finally be driving as fast as everyone else
3) You won't have crazy jackasses weaving in and out of traffic
4) There COULD be less collisions due to less aggressive drivers out there/less road rage

However...

Cons:
1) Merging?
2) On long straight highways 55 is going to add TONS of time to trips that are normally done at 70 mph. What was normally a 2 hour drive down the highway now adds over half an hour.
3) Going slow may cause drivers to go insane and start killing things
4) Drivers will pay less attention to the road <==ALWAYS A BAD THING!
5) Merging/On ramps/Offramps?

I wouldnt use it. I'd get too bored just sitting there. Maybe if I had my car put on Pimp My Ride and I had 40 different TVs mounted in every spot on my car, then I might do it. But I'd still get bored watching movies in my car all the time. Plus I'd be jacked knowing I was only going 55 mph when I could easily be doing well over that and cutting my drive time down.

So, it'd be sweet if everyone else used it, cause then the left lane would always be open (theoretically) and I could just pass everyone.

Theoretically communism is a good idea too. Unfortunatly, like this idea, it involves people; greedy, angry, and jealous people.

^^Agreed, communism works on paper, not in real life.

Diesel is cheap here compared to the rest of Europe, especialy the U.K. It's at 1,35EUR per liter.

^^Wanna know another reason communism doesn't work? It killed 100 million people in the 20th century.

I'm very interested to see what happens with Ford bring it's euro models over. Here in US and A people are dusting off all their subcompacts and hitting the road with them.
