Why do concept cars or cars yet to be released and/or still in development stages have black body cover vinyls???

Like this one: A 2009 BMW 7 Series (Photo As of Mid-June, 2008)

http://www.caradvice.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/bmw-7-series-015.jpg

I am guessing that it's got to do with design leakage on the models before the car's official release, and keeping the exterior design a secret until official announcement??

An explanation would be nice thanks!!

Btw, as of July 26, 2008 the official release of the 2009 BMW 7 Series photos has been released. Here's a link if you're interested: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/04/officially-official-2009-bmw-7-series/ [Not a hyperlink, copy n paste!!^^]

You can see from that very image the amount of bodywork detail that is shown on the silver surface compared to the black surface. It's just to keep the details from prying eyes.

You should see a car completly camouflaged in the black and white stickers. I saw it on a Z4 I nearly couldn't see the lines. BMW is really good at this.

Its cubism camouflage, also known as 'Razzle Dazzle' camouflage. It was used before on war ships so that the lines and direction of the boat were not visibly clear, which made hitting them with torpedoes more difficult. It's used on cars to make the lines of the car more difficult to see.

^^That last bit was quite interesting, about the boats, never knew that.

But Camo., does stand out alot, so you would kinda know it's some pre-released car.

But I guess you would already know that if there were rumors before. :p

I heard about this before, it breaks up the lines of the ship.

So it's to keep the details of the car... Cool.+ The cubism camoulage of ship is interesting! Thanks^^

and this is more than just stickers :)
Each of these Lotus test cars has the final body of the now Evora under it, but to look at it, you would never know :p

the reason is very simple. To keep the shape of a new car secret until the car is ready for launch at a motor show of the manufacturers choosing.
