View Full Version : Gallardo Help

hey people
has anyone here driven an E-gear gallardo before? I think Evo-power and driftster drove gallardos, right? well, I need help from anyone who has driven that car or any other car with a pedal shift transmission.
If I'm lucky enough, in a couple of months or less, I'll be renting a gallardo for one day for a very special occasion. I've only driven automatic transmission cars, and my car has the steptronic +/- thing which I do use sometimes. I have no experience in gear shifting whatsoever. Will I have too much trouble figuring out how to drive a gallardo properly?
if you guys think it needs practice, I might save up and rent it for 2 days. 1st day to practice and pick up chicks, and the next day for the occasion. but if you guys have reasons to convince me it's a bad idea, I'll just rent a 997 turbo. It'll do.
oh and the special occasion isn't a race or anything like that. I just have to drive it around normally without killing anyone.

Hope that helps. Basically, just the pedals and that's it. If it's when to shift and stuff like that. I don't really know. You should ofcourse get used to the car, though.

I'm sure it's fairly straight forward, a bit like the system on PlayStations, except here you're in real life.
The Gallardo starts to make a howl over approx. 3,500rpm, so you'll want to change gear before that if you're just cruising. Downshifting should come naturally, but remember it's better to (accidentally) be in very low RPMs than very high RPMs.

Ask the rental agency how to deal with it when you're a beginner ;).

*sniff sniff* do I smell jealousy?
If an old lady can drive it, I'm sure I can as well. and I just realized I'm gonna be learning real manual on a mustang starting today. so by the time I rent the Lambo, a semi-auto shouldn't be a problem.
hopefully, I will rent it. and when I do, I will have good evidence to show you all.

do you mean it'll happen automatically? like I don't have to shift down to decelerate?

I can only help with a F430 paddleshift or those fitted to the Spec B Subaru's.
For the performance based cars its slightly smoother if you lift off the throttle on the upshifts otherwise its rather jerky (I didn't enjoy the F430 g'box experience). For the Subaru though you can keep your foot planted to the floor, it will still change up. As for downshifts the computer should take care of most of that for you, i'm sure the company will give you a basic brief of how to operate the car anyway, as its in their interest for you not to damage it!
Basically just experiment on a non-busy part of the road until you feel comfortable, there is no need to be 100% on throttle, then off, then 100% on throttle, smooth throttle usage will probably be the cure to any uncomfortable driving.
I havent experienced the E-Gear and its not something I particuarly want to, proper gearboxes are the only things that still interest me for sheer driving pleasure, even if the E-gear can change gear in a millionth a second
But maybe that helped, as I said I found the F430 very jerky until you're more used to it, so just take it easy really. At least you can't stall it :p

do you mean it'll happen automatically? like I don't have to shift down to decelerate?
On our Tiptronic Audi, it does do it automatically if you leave it until too late.
But I'm not sure the E-gear will, and besides, it's not supposed to, you're the one driving, you downshift.
Surely you know the basics of how gears work ?!?! Go faster - upshift, slow down - downshift!

What you smell is the acrid stench of your own brain's effluence seeping from your ears. Assuming you have a brain.
If you can "save up" to "hopefully" rent a Lambo for a day, I'm sure I would have no problem doing the same. In fact, I'd probably have less of a problem because by the quality of your posts I'd say your mental age is closer to your shoe size than it is to the legal driving age.
If you can't handle the paddle shift in an auto Lambo, renting a 997 turbo "instead" would be pointless. Both cars are meant to come with a clutch, and only poseurs would select one otherwise.
And if by "picking up chicks" you mean being ridiculed, go for it. Get footage.

I don't think it will downshift itself. Full-Auto cars will, as they just give you the most torque and power as possible when you step on the accelerator harder when in low revs at high gears and the computer says you don't need that extra gear and shifts down and stuff. That's kicking down, our BMW doesn't do it unless its in auto mode, in tip-tronic, it doesnt happen.

I was just about to say something very similar i.e. practice how to shift gears on a cheaper manual first. Although I think that 90% of Gallardos come with a paddle-shift gearbox. Therefore, you will do well to find one to rent with a 'proper' manual.
I don't think the e-gear system will be very difficult to learn to manage. I think you can probably just leave in automatic if that's what you want to do. There is no clutch pedal to worry about and everything is done for you.
P.S: Don't worry about Rav too much. He can seem to be a bit hostile, but I don't think he is actually as bad as he may seem. He is a bit of an acquired taste as I have said before.

Where do you plan on renting this Lamborghini from? Because I can only think of a very select few who "rent" 6 figure supercars to noobs like us. On another note, I clearly doubt that they would just toss you the keys and tell you to knock yourself out. They would probably spend a good half hour to an hour explaining the do's and don'ts with that car.

Well, driving a manual isn't really hard, you just have to get used to it, know when to shift, know how to shift :p
And also what you have to learn is how not to kill anyone :p

Umm... am I the only one here who thinks that learning to drive a traditional manual will have no help on driving the E-Gear? The E-Gear has no clutch pedal, you just pull the paddle towards you to change up a gear... Its simple, when the revs get higher like in any car, in an automatic it changes it for you, all you need to do is just pull that paddle towards you and hey-presto! you're in the next gear
And I think they do change down gears for you if you approach a junction in 6th, it would probably reduce to 2nd or 3rd although you should really do it yourself.
Plus also be careful not to burn out the clutch on the semi-auto car, they have a tendancy to do that especially at low speeds and turning round. Unlike a manual where you control it and an auto where it has a plate, the semi-auto's of the performance car world use a clutch and it will destroy it fast if you are turning 3-point turns or lots of stop-start traffic (especially uphill)... Just a word of warning ;)

I'm from Kuwait. Gallardos and F430's are available for rent.

I think it would help me understand the theory behind gear shifting, and help me get the feeling of when I have to change gear. and I have someone to teach me in his mustang, so I might as well learn.

Actually, thats a pretty good idea. Seriously, the principle is the same. To drive an E-gear system, its very similar to driving any other paddle shift box. Up when your going faster, Down when your going slower. If you have the transmission in sport mode, it will not change down for you in an E-gear system. I've never driven a Gallardo, but I have driven a AM DB9 and AM V8 with paddle boxes. Very easy to use, just match the rev's to the gear, you cannot lock the rear wheels either with a paddle-box.
But, a few questions.
For the third time, what are you renting this Lamborghini for, it will help us to help you.
Forgive me, if I'm wrong, but your 19 years old, correct? Are you sure they will let you drive this car? Seriously? In the UK, I couldn't drive a car like that until I was 21, unless I owned it. Scoobiekid will back me up on that one. The insurance for this company to let u drive it must be hitting the roof you they let you.
Anyway, when/if you drive the car, just take it easy and gently. Dont focus everything on the gear bit, I'd put it into Auto mode and worry about driving it first, get used to the controls and speed.
Post some pics when/if you do and when exactly is this happening?

Just do as SubaruKid says, to up-shift pull it towards you, to downshift push it away from you

You'll be lucky to find a company that allows it under 25 and you have to be a member of the club, like P1 or SuperCarClub or Ecurie etc etc. I'm sure some out there will hire things like Astons and 911's to 21+ but majority is 25+ for insurance rating.

Bro, The Gallardo does have a huge "A" button that changes it to Auto mode and lets it do the shifting .
but if you want to use the paddle shifts start from standstill, lift the right paddle one time to move to 1st then press the A button, elsewhere, you can keep driving it in the paddle shifting sense (2-3-4-5-6). to shift it to reverse, stop the car, hold both paddles (left and right)to change it into neutral, then to the left of the steering wheel I think theres a small button with R on it .

Amjams, from my knowledge it is a fairly simple system. It has an Upshift paddle, a downshift paddle, a button for Auto, and a button for Reverse. Like S tune said, pull right paddle for 1st, then Press auto button. That will get you a nice easy start and will let you shift up and down with paddles.
First of all, post lots of pics. And second of all, please get a good color for the Lambo, yellow not being one of them. Its too stereotypical. Get green or black or something. Have fun with it but dont be brash and ignorand of the car's power and handling. It will be wonderful if you respect it for the machine it is.

While I have no personally driven a Gallardo, I have rode in one. It has the same setup for gear changing that you'll find in pretty much any paddle shifting car.
My advice, before you F up the gallardo, see if you can test drive a GTI with DSG. If you can get the hang of that then you should be fine with the Lambo.
Also, Amjams where do you live that you rent a Lamborghini...or any car for that matter? Are you seriously over the age of 25? If you are not, you much be at LEAST 21 and then they tack on some more fee's for you being under the minimum age.

anticipate your shifts..
the gear switch as fast as people say it is..is not instantaneous..
there will be a noticeable delay from paddle click to shift.
so if you're gunning it..plan ahead for it..
don't wait till your motors gonna pop before you shift..
and it's herky jerky too..
Don't be fooled by people saying it's "Smooth shifting" and it's the wave of the future..it's not..it's a wacky feeling..yes i said wacky..and at first it will almost feel as if you're doing it wrong..
it'll feel like you took it out of gear...let it sit in neutral...then BAM into the next gear..so don't be surprised if your head snaps a few times.

Yeah, what Driftster said about it being not so smooth IS true. Unless you get the LP560-4 model, it's gonna be a little rough, but probably less than a beginner driving a normal manual for sure.
In all honesty, you might want to take your foot off the gas for a second during shifts until you get used to how the car is going to be changing through gears. This way you don't have to worry about over revving the engine and having it explode as a giant half ton German paper weight.

In all honesty, you might want to take your foot off the gas for a second during shifts until you get used to how the car is going to be changing through gears. This way you don't have to worry about over revving the engine and having it explode as a giant half ton Audi.
