Stick to your neighborhood for a while - places that you know well enough to not have to think about direction/where you're going, just driving.
Stay off the interstate until you're comfortable driving on two lane highways and around town - don't rush it, there's no need too, and it's easy to f*ck up.
Oh, and driving at night, to a n00b, is %5000 different from driving during the day. Things look totally different. Again, stick to neighborhoods you're already familiar with.
And remember, everyone makes mistakes. Everyone. Don't get discouraged. You will pick it up.
Best of luck and happy motoring!
That knife I posted in the lounge came in today. It's beautiful. I'll post pics when I get my camera back - soon.

I suggest empty parking lots, they're a good place to get a feel for your vehicle and be able to figure out the sensitivity of the acceleration and breaking. Learn how fast you can stop your vehicle, get up some speed and hit the breaks hard. Learn how large your car is (this will take time), learn the corners of your car make sure to pay attention to where you are on the roads, and how close you are to other drivers, and objects.
Enjoy, be safe, good luck.

I don't know how permits work in Indiana, but is this a permit to be able to practice in a car, or is this your license to be able to drive on your own. If you are just taking a permit test, then don't sweat it.
If this is you just getting a permit then make sure to just take it easy when you are practicing driving afterwards. If it means driving under the speed limit then so be it, you aren't impressing anyone. I actually started to practice driving in the night when there was nearly NO traffic around, aka round 11-12 pm. Use that time to get acquainted with the feel of the pedals and staying in your lane. For day driving, don't be too preoccupied with driving around the neighborhood, do it a couple of times, I would go somewhere where the speed is no higher than 30. While in this stage, I would practice parallel parking.
Then as you get the feel of the car take it out during the day during non-rush hour traffic to get acquainted with being around other cars. Take it slow and easy, you aren't racing. When changing lanes always check over your shoulder, especially if you are driving a high profile vehicle. Then in about 2-3 weeks of this, take it into rush hour traffic and make sure your foot hovering above the brakes at all times and make sure there is plenty of space between you and the next car. Even if you have other drivers passing you, take it at your own pace.
I highly wouldn't recommend interstate driving until at least 3-6 months of driving. Your driving test won't take you to the interstates so there is really no need to practice there. Eventually you will get the hang of it so don't worry if it seems like you keep messing up. Keep your eyes peeled and don't take them off the road. A parent in the car with no radio or other distractions is the best recipe.
I still don't technically get the context of your question however. I don't know if you actually have a permit and are driving on city roads or you are going to get a permit to be able to drive on city roads with an adult in the pass seat. Either way, the above should help.:)

My driving instructor had me go out on the highway the first morning. He came to my house around 5am, we drove through the deserted streets of my town, and then headed right out on the highway. Mearging is an important skill to learn (I see many adults that still don't know how) and sometimes it's best to tackle your fears. In a safe manner of course...

Dude! Cool!
No way man, hit the kennedy at about 5pm FRIDAY afternoon, then take the spur to edens north bound, hit the left lanes and GOOOOOOOOOO!!!! http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w245/lsixer/emoticons/alright.gif
Kidding of course. You should also know that on the kennedy and edens those times of day your lucky to hit 10mph at ANY point. http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w245/lsixer/emoticons/hehe.gif

Clutch is right, if this IS your permit test, then it's just a written test. That's it, no driving involved.
However, make sure you know what all the road signs are and what they mean. Yield means stop only if someone else is coming. If no one is coming, you do not stop.
Also, before you get into your car, and back out of your drive way, you are suppose to go around behind the car and check for small children and crap. This was a question that a bunch of my friends got wrong so I thought I'd give you the heads up.
Also, you are not allowed to pass at an intersection, on a hill, over railroad tracks, or if you have a solid line.
Just go over the little DMV guidebook and you should be fine.

Yeah, the permit test is the written portion though it can be just as tough. It's the behind-the-wheel that gets you your license.
If you are going for your license, probably the only thing I can say is be calm. Any uneasiness behind the wheel can cost you (I know it did for me when I failed my first time).

Yeah, GM Man is only 15 so he can only get his permit, not his license. Speaking of licences however, I just sent mine through the washing machine and it make it look like crap, so I need to get a new one...which kinda sucks because I don't really like the style of the new licenses.
Also, one thing that a lot of people don't think about when getting your license, is the car you drive says a lot about you. For some reason the DMV is only staffed by crochity older people who hate everything ESPECIALLY young kids getting their license.
If you pull up in some hot car that rules they will be that much more pissed off at you because they hate their lives and you are obviously enjoying yours. So if you can take a fairly bland car that rides smoothly. If your folks have big boring sedan it's really ideal.

I absolutely hate the way I did my behind the wheel test, it was too easy. We just went out like any other normal day, except he didn't correct anything you did wrong. The only thing he marked me down for was not keeping my hands at 8 and 4.
And the fact that it was done through my school and I knew the teacher who was my instructor, while it helped with the nervousness, it was too easy. I used to wonder people around here are awful drivers, now I know.

^ You were pretty lucky to do the driving test with someone you knew. I went to the instructor my brother went to and failed the first time and barely passed the second time. At least I avoided a guy some of us Tri-Valley residents called "Scary Larry".

But it puts you in a comfortable setting, almost like driving with your parents. I would rather drive with someone I didn't know because when your by yourself on the road, your not always going to be in a comfortable situation.

When your at the intersection, and the light just turn green, theres no need to rush...I learned that the hard way. It may feel like you are suppose to go fast when the lights turn, but no, pick up speed slowly will save gas and help you get used to your car.
One nice tip though, the first time you drive, take it in a small deserted street and just go REAALLLY slowly, and try not to wet yourself. Then, on the next day or the next time you drive, you will get used to the car. And stay off large hills, becuase if you stop on one of them, and start again, you fall back a bit and it WILL scare you.

Did you not drive on the interstate when you were in drivers ed? When i did drivers ed we drove everywhere. I recomend driving on a highway that is less traveled. I'm not sure if there is one close in illinois but in NC we have some highways that aren't as busy, and are good for getting higher speed experience.
here is a great thread with advice from a lot of experienced members

Just some important notes while driving on the road:
Always look over your shoulder when changing lanes, even if you kinda lag it.
ALWAYS watch out for pedestrians.
Look both ways whilst at an intersection, a stop, etc. before going ahead.
Ped's are more important than anything, especially when children.
And mistakes will always be made, some worse than others, just try to learn from them...it'll all come to you, and you'll be getting it in no time. :)
And NEVER try to be a race car driver. :D
----
As for your permit, just keep it in the glove box if there's room for it, I know how it feels to have one.
It's like sacred and shouldn't be folded/wrinkled in any way. :p
But just hold it until you get your license, I have mine now...so it's easier.

Another thing you should look out for because I experience this on a daily basis. In stop and go traffic, NEVER block an intersection. If your unsure, come to a stop then go if there is an opening. And if there is someone waiting when traffic starts moving let them out.

Congrats on getting your permit GM man, just remember, take it easy, you don't have to learn to drive in a week. Take as much time as you want to experiment with different stuff. Worst thing you can do is rush it. Other than that, my previous post covers just about everything.

another thing, maybe you'll be lucky to not have to buy your own gas, but when you get the license and start paying for gas it will become easy to no speed, or at least accelerate fast. Before gas went crazy i was getting around 16 mpg, maybe a little under, maybe a litter over, 16/19 is what my truck is rated at. Now i get over 18 mpg, around 18.5 average. I started driving (gas wise) conservatively.

Well here they are teaching 8 and 4. I keep my hands at 10 and 2, but they say that is bad because if your airbags deploy they say you'll hit yourself in the face. I think its retarded because 8 and 4 is uncomfortable as hell. And they also claim this is better because of now with power steering they say you don't need to turn the wheel as much.

They teacher police officers to drive at 9 and 3 because you have the greatest range of motion without taking your hands off the wheel.
Honestly, just drive with one at 12 and the other on the shifter with a 2 o clock lean and you'll totally ghetto fly wiggidy wack mactastic, and you'll win.

Be careful on 290 going east, you have a lot of crazy drivers. I suggest driving at night around 8-9pm for practice. Oh yeah my dad told me this; if you're driving on the highway and can't stop fast enough, just brake into the emergency lane. It helped me not rear end someone before. If you're friend is driving right next to you, don't speed. Its worthless getting tickets just because you're messing around with your friend. I've gotten 4 already and I'm on super vision. Good luck driving on the road!
