Welcome Paul3810 to SCF.

I'm with the GT. The style alone deflowers the SLR. But I find it odd that they have very close 0-60 times- 3.8 seconds :-k

I'll choose the GT. I much prefer the design of the GT.
But the sound of the SLR is so nice the deep burble of the super charged V8 is like....described in Top Gear is like a WWII spitfire.

Then the V10 is also a very nice engine.
So performance-wise i'm indifferent. My thumb goes up to the GT design\layout so on that alone I choose the GT.

CGT for me. It's more a hardcore supercar as the SLR. If only the SLR was a little bit more McLaren and a little less Mercedes..

I'd go for the Crrera GT, I think it'sa better sports car in every aspect.
The way it looks, the way it performs, and c'mon! it'sa Porshce.
I like the Merc too, but I find two negative points on the looks of the SLR.
1- The side grills are too overdone.
2- When you look at the lateral of the car, the hood is just way too long. The engine still fits inside if you shorten it a little. but that's not gonna happen, so...
Porsche Carrera GT for me.

The reason why the SLR has a long hood is becasue the engine is shifted as further back as possible as to attain perfect weight distrubution.
Dont know why they didnt make the car a mid-engine.
maybe its to draw some similarity to the original SLR.

Anyways, i think the SLR design placed a bit too much on function, rather than form.

Well, I'm going with the SLR...

While it's laden with leather interior, an automatic tranny, and an engine up in that long ass nose I'll take it.

And here's why:
From my latest issue of Sports Car International...

Talking to a C-GT owner: "The clutch works counter intuitively, stop on any incline and you want to give some gas, but you can't! You'll either kill it or spin the wheels."
To point out hie isn't alone in this view Keig (Owner of C-GT) talks of several other Carrera GT owners he knows who are experiencing the same problem. One bought his Porsche in hilly San Francisco and wrote some contacts in the factory saying the problem is so bad he can't drive the car to the dealer for servicing!
He also found a few other problems (I'm paraphrasing here) the low nose is really easy to scrape and the long wheelbase means it's terribly easy to scrape the underbody on crowns in the road.

So...The SLR easier to use, faster, and more relaxed. And here's the kicker...

If I wanted a $400,000, 600+ horsepower Porsche that did over 200 mph and handled like a dream. I'd get the recently fully-legalized 959...Game. Set. Match.

pwn3d. I agree with ghalos, i'm going with the SLR. But only in black.

It's just more sophisticated and nice. I love the carrera GT, but i dont know if i really need something like that. It sounds like an F1 car and goes like nothing else on the planet, but it's too hardcore for me. I dont really like the styling either. It's so not porsche. I think it's another sell out car from porsche, like the cayenne. The manual would be nice, but i heard the clutch was tricky and i dont feel like messing around with it. The automatic on the mercedes would be nice since i'd probably drive it on the street more than on the track. Plus, if you buy an SLR, you get to go to the McLaren technology center in england, which is the coolest place on earth. Last but not least, it sounds amazing. It sounds like the a WWII fighter plane. It's years better sounding than the carrera GT. Definetly the best sounding supercar if not the best sounding car, ever.

Don't agree with that part. The front looks like a true porsche, only the back looks different. But the other supercars from Porsche in the past also had an other back(thinking about the 959, and the GT1).

About the bit from the clutch, i heard that too. Doesn't sound too good.:-k But because i don't know how bad it really is, i'd still pick the CGT.

I choose the Carrera GT.

I don't want a supercharged engine, an automatic gearbox, crappy handling and crappy brakes, thanks.

Crappy Handling and Crappy Brakes?!!!!???
I understand it's not as feeling full as the C-GT, but c'mon...1 g on the skidpad and an airbrake WITH ceramic rotors means good handling and braking...

Mopar68

Since when does the SLR have crappy brakes? Ok, the .95g's on the skidpad is definetly not very supercarish, but the SLR can get from 120-0 in less of a distance than most cars 60-0! The SLR does it's job as an uber GT better than the McLaren F1 does it's job as an Uber super car.

SLR all the way, its got class. And side pipes, what else does it need?

For performance, I'd take the Porsche. It goes round bends really quickly and should also make a nicer sound. If I was driving through town tho, I'd get the SLR, in a deep shade of electric blue with the engine just above 3000rpm. Look at their faces....

The SLR DOES have crappy brakes, they might be strong but they feel like they're electric. A total disappointment. :(

I too have heard about the bad feel in the SLR breaks but im willing to give that up for such a cool cruiser

Well, normally I'd argue Jim, but I respect Jim and from what I understand I think he's talking about the brake feel. Which yes, I agree has been described as "Muddy" or somewhat vague. But I guarentee after a number of days driving that car you''d get the hang of it as in any other car.
Whereas the C-GT has a clutch that I don't think I could get used to. =)

Here we go:

A loud, high whine sounds from the side exhausts mounted forward of the doors. Close the doors, and noise is muffled to an agreeable rumble. The car is tactile, down to the resonance transmitting through the steering column. We drove a preproduction SLR over a two-day period, and half the time we found the brakes annoying.

On the first day, the brakes felt nervous: The pedal is floor-mounted, like an air-cooled Porsche 911's, and the initial brake feel gave way to a dead zone after the first half inch before settling in again. It may have been a bedding issue, as they felt better and more progressive on the second day. The binders were brutally effective under hard braking, assisted by the airbrake, which tells you it's working by popping up in the rearview mirror.

I don't think C&D had a problem with the brakes though.

See?

I was talking about the feel of the brakes, and not about the performance of them.

The SLR has 'Sensotronic Brake Control', a system that I would not exactly describe as a success...

Yeah, good call jim. Apprently nobody likes the feel, but i think we can all agree that they're powerful.

Yes, indeed they are. I think all supercars have powerful brakes. :)
