SL500. Slower but better!

I dont really like the styling of the SL500, but the XKR is downright dated. So SL500 for me.
(btw: wouldn't it be more fitting for this comparo to be SL55 vs. XKR?)

Although the Jaguar has better performance, I would rather buy a Mercedes, because it looks better and its retractable hard top is more practical than the Jaguar's soft top. By the way, I think the XK8 would be more appropriate for this comparison, according to the fact that the XKR has almost a 100 horsepower more and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h the whole second faster than the SL 500.

Sure you can. The key is not flamming anyone..... We have to respect everyones opinions. Look at the F 40 vs enzo thread (- tuna). We just have to remember not all of us are the same, we all like different aspects of cars....

PICS AND SPECS PLEASE.
Btw, I think I'd choose the Benz, mainly because it looks better IMO, and also has better quality. But I don't think I would ever consider those two cars anyway.

Perhaps I should clarify this.
I meant that they're both roadsters, and I'm not too fond of roadsters. I prefer something solid over my head.
I'm all for coupes. :)

The SL500 starts at $88800; the XKR starts at $81300 (coupe) or $86300 (convertible). The XKR is a significantly better car by most measures (God knows why you people are picking the SL500, though I'd bet it has a lot to do with styling).
SL55 is $120000. Performance might match better, but it's way off on price. The comparison is correct.

Jaguar XKR, sooooo much classier in my opinion. When I think Jaguar I think, "Ooohhhh yeaaahhh", as do alot of non-car fanatics. When I think of Mercedes I think of rich people with no sense of identity and excitement. Nowadays that's different, but it's what Mercedes used to be known for, comfort and luxury.

I'm tired of that styling though. I think the XKR kind of looks like a shoe. It's very rounded without much drama. It's way dated, and i'm kind of tired of it.

the new 2005 slightly redesigned xkr is way better though, it has several noticable improvements, such as 20in. wheels, quod exhaust, a new front end, and 390hp

The SL for me, as it's a convertible, but doesn't sacrifice the advantage of a coupe. But to save, $, I'd take a Lexus SC430, plenty cheaper, more luxuries, although it may not be as "sporty" as the SL... but when you have a hardtop convertible, luxury is often what you look for 8)

You know, those wheels are $6000 options. In fact, they're the most expensive single option on the market. Why wouldn't you just buy an XKR with standard eighteens and go aftermarket? You could probably get a significantly better deal.

probably not...well...performance wheels that is, my dad priced a set of 19in. HRE wheels for a SL55, black w/ silver lip, nice tires, it was going to be north of $8,000
and either way, the 18in. hydras are still nice
