Melbourne
When Formula One came to Australia in 1985 it set up home in Adelaide. However, ex-racer-turned-entrepreneur Bob Jane wanted a race in Melbourne. He created a huge "thunderdome" and invented the AUSCAR series, bringing NASCAR action to Australia.
The desire to have a race in Melbourne did not wane. Despite the popular end of season slot for the Adelaide race, pressure was growing from the Melbourne motor sport community, and in 1992 Jeff Kennett was elected the new premier of the State of Victoria. He immediately set about improving Melbourne's profile. First on his list was the Australian Grand Prix.
An agreement was reached with Formula One in 1993, but the contract with Adelaide did not expire until 1995, so Kennett had plenty of time to prepare. A track was developed in Melbourne's beautiful Albert Park, part of it using closed-off public roads, and in 1996 the city held the first round of the World Championship. Since then, the venue has become the home of Formula One's season opener. The race is very popular with drivers and fans alike, and the party atmosphere of Melbourne keeps them coming back year after year.

This race is going to be SO IMPORTANT!, because this is the first time, we will se Ferrari and Mclaren give 110% to win!, and both teams will run under optimal conditions (like the Alonso-Hamilton thing, and both cars now know Bridgestone tires)
I think we will se a red Ferrari, win this, or maybe Kovalainen (just a feeling i got).
The 2 biggest surprises will be Williams who will do good, and Honda which is going to be at the back! (don't know if that would be so much of a surprise)

lol the Schumacher stand is the smallest...never noticed that until now :D
And I hope Red Bull have it's reliability issues sorted out by now - Webber should be challenging for podiums...

Has anyone noticed Nakajima's results in the trainings? I feel that hes gonna earn much points for Williams this year... More than Nelsinho Piquet for Renault(because of the shitty renault).
And I suppose that Toro Rosso is going to be the better Red Bull again with Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais.
What do you guys think?

I think even with testing results this race is so hard to predict. This will act as a benchmark, a starting point for all the teams.
I am going to say Ferrari will win this, but the McLarens wont be that far behind. Then its anyones guess, BMW, Williams and Renault will all be pretty close i think, maybe the BMW's slightly ahead of the others like last season, but not quite there to challenge the front two. I think Red Bull will be noticebly faster than they were. Toyota, hmm, i just dont see them making massive steps forward, i think they will be in the same place they were all through last year. I think, against all odds Honda will do the impossible and go backwards. I can see them fighting with Super Aguri and Force India (still doesnt sound right!).
Who knows though. Ferrari may be useless and the 2 Hondas end up being amazing, its a little hard to say yet with just testing times.
Whatever happens, it will no doubt be an amazing race! I cant wait!

I'm looking forward to this race because it's the first official race and it's really important fro the drivers and the teams.
I hope to see a really good race. I will not make any predictions. I should think firstly.
I only want from BMW to be a really good competitor to the other "big" teams.

Heyy guys!
I've decided to start posting again, specifically in the F1 threads!
I've been reading a lot of SCF, but haven't posted in a while, but seeing as F1 is my speciality it only seems right/natural to post my views here!!
So yeah, I'm really excited for 2008, you've got Mc-Merc on the rebound with new driver Heikki, {who has a MASSIVE chance to shine this year, {if he gets it right}}, Ferrari obviously, wanting to win again with Kimi, even Massa?? Who knows! Then you have the so-called 'improved' BMWs & Williams going for broke! Even Honda claimed to have created a better car for this year. If that's not enough you also have Alonso in his renault & Piquet Jr...which should be interesting to watch as well...!
Ahhh, it's all so exciting, shame that it probably won't be as good as they've made out and that there will be no overtaking, but meh you can't have it all!

^Yay, welcome back Kaz. :)
As for my predictions, (crap, just remembered my season review thread needs to be done!), it's very very tough to predict anything. At the latest tests in Barcelona everyone has been having their fair share of the good lap time pie (the GLTP, as I like to call it), so it's tough to really call anything.
In the really hot conditions, in Bahrain where Ferrari tested before they came to Barcelona, they were blisteringly fast, at one point Raikkonen was was two seconds faster than the fastest 2007 lap round that circuit in their new F2008 but when they came back to Barcelona, McLaren just seemed to have the edge over them, and in particular, Hamilton did. He seems to be on form, but so does Raikkonen.
Massa, for me, has kept things a bit quiet in testing and I just hope for his sake that he can have a brilliant race in Melbourne, because I hope his ejection from the title challenge before his other three rivals won't sap his motivation or his confidence. Maybe he's just preparing himself to give it all for Melbourne.
As for Williams, they have made significant steps forward and their car is looking great, and the same goes for RBR. BMW haven't shone as much as they would have liked to, it's no secret, but they might have to wait for a few more updates to get that win they want.
Honda seem pretty slow (oh where have I heard that one before ) in testing, but that's because their RA108 is a base - meaning it is a brand new car - that needs to be found a set-up which the drivers are happy to push to the limit, so expect more as the season goes on.
I could write about F1 for hours here (good time to do my SR thread then Ben, eh?), but I have to go now. I'll update the F1 News 2008 thread tomorrow with testing times, views and opinions of myself and other people from the F1 world, because it's all starting to get exciting now! :)

Well it has come round so fast  !!!!!!!!!!!!!
It only felt like last week I was celebrating Kimi winning the championship.
Anyway I think that BMW will give all in the first race so I'm putting my neck on the line and I'm gonna say that BMW will win in Australia with Kubica taking the win :).
Kimi will finish on the podium and I can't see McLaren getting a podium within the first few races.
So yeah I predict that the race will finish like this:
1)Kubica
2)Kimi
3)Massa
Either way I will be happy if either Kubica or Kimi wins the title this year but I would prefer Kimi to win it more :D.
GO KIMI GO !!!!!!!!!!

Kubica to be first? You must kidding. That would be one great dream for me.

Mar 04, 2008, 3:41 PM
Well Kubica and Heidfeld have said that the new F1.07 has over the last few weeks gotten very fast.
BMW were in a similiar posistion to Honda in testing, their new car was so radical that they are still finding potenial. I also believe Toyota may have a similiar story.
Though williams will destroy this season. I swear it. Rosberg, Nakajima, awsome new livery, plus such a fast car. I think if you remeber back, Rosberg was fighting with BMW in Brazil. Its obvious Williams will be back soon. While Renault will not.
I'm looking forward to seeing Williams race. One to see Rosberg do some amazing driving, and to see Naka in action. The guys great at overtaking, and hes crazy. Doubt he'll finish in Melbourne.
As for the title. BMW are out. Ferrari appeared to have the upper hand, but I don't know now. I expect a 4 way battle, kovy, lewis, Kimi and Massa.

I still think its gonna be McLaren and Ferrari on top this year, at least for the beginning of the season. But I really hope BMW have got it right this time, and can start getting some wins to compete for the championship. It would be nice to Renault back up top as well, but I dont think its gonna happen soon.

Well, all in all, let's hope this race lives up to the hype. Testing has given us sooo much to look forward to, and I find myself actively salivating and the possiblities in front of us.
Again, we have the big two at the front, who appear to be pulling awat again. I say pulling away, because some rather odd things have happened. William's have offered up an excellently fast car, no doubt. Look for Rosberg in that Australian pack, and he's my wild card for the win. That wouldn't suprise me at all.
Obviously though, at the front, Mclaren and Ferrari. Who will take the first win ? My money, Mclaren. They have brilliantly even cars, no doubt about that. I feel Hamilton is going to gun it this year, unlikely last year in the first few races where he was slightly more nicely nicely. He has to understand this year that the pressure is on him to win the championship, and that he has to be his own boss sometimes. He can't rely on the team to tell him how to do everything.
Kimi to will be on top notch form. Bouncing back from a championship win, he has more to prove now than anyone else on the track. He will feel like he has to win this. But, that is a race we have to wait and see what happens.
The BMW's are going to be quick, but not straight away I reckon. They now say they have a better package than the F1.07, but everyone else has a package better than last years cars, albeit Honda, who have decided to use the "power of dreams" go kart to win the race this year (sorry benny :p).
The red bull teams should be interesting too. Last year they suffered horrible reliabilty, but apparently this year it is fixed. What most people don't realise is is that they have a blisteringly quick car thans to Mr. Adrian Newey. My bet is that they'll be right up behind BMW, shoving their horns where they are unwanted.
Benhind that, I reckon there might be a nice little Renault/Toyota/Toro Rosso battle going on. Well, actually, I say behind, but there going to be so close to they aforementioned two teams that it could possibly be just one massive group on certain tracks. Even then, looking at some test results, Toyota could be right up the front. That's what makes this first race so damn interesting.
Behind them, well, Honda, Super Aguri, Force India. The three teams who are always saying, "at the next race, we'll be in the mid pack". Yet, I always have this feeling that there lying to me, over and over again. It's like I always say to my psychology teacher, "Yeah, you'll have that essay tomorrow", but in fact I need a completely new sponsor so it never happens.
But, all in all. I can't wait. This will be absolutely fantastic in everyway. Bring on the magic, let it begin. Plus, I'm saving all my pennie's to go to Silverstone this year. Woot Woot !!!

First, Very Very good post!
But i think you are going to be surprised about the Force India team. Read this artikle from Eurosport:
http://eurosport.yahoo.com/04032008/58/force-india-look-jordan-history.html

What you have to remember about F1 though CTD, is the fact that nobody enters to bring up the rear. Nobody enters to be in the mid pack. Everybody enters to be a winner. That is the ultimate goal, and ultimate end. Blind Obsession often drives some people in the motorworld, hence why so many teams go bankrupt, because they are at the back of the pack.
At the moment, for the moment, I see Force India going no where. There still using the Spec B Spyker car with minor upgrades. Everyone else believes they have made a step forward, and trust me, even when they say, we'll be in the midpack, which team isn't saying that ?
Maybes in a year or two, they'll make some progress. This is a tough tough business to be in. Then again, this is a spontaneous business to be in, and I could be completely wrong, but, that's what makes predictions in F1 all the more fun to make.

There still using the Spec B Spyker car with minor upgrades.
Keep in mind that the B-spec version of that car (The F8-VIIB) was designed with 2008 in mind. For instance, they had already implemented a 4 race gearbox in that car. I'm not saying that they will strike success this year, but the team have a good attitude and at least more money then their predecessors to do something.

Honestly I didn't know that, but that is interesting. Still, that car didn't have much success last year, and I still very much doubt it will this year. I prepare myself to be suprised though.

Yea, I saw the preview show. Alonso seemed quite positive about their car on the programme, so I dont know what to expect.
I also heard that Berny told Melbourne they have to make their race a night race for next year, or their off the calender. A bit stupid if him if you ask me.
SpArKy
Mar 11, 2008, 6:58 PM
Not at all. What you have got to remember is about Bernie, most of his decisions are profit led. We all know that F1 is biggest in europe. When Australia has a day time race, it's on at roughly 2-4am in the morning in Great Britain.
However, if this switched to a night race, it would be prime time. Meaning that the oppurtunity for the most people to watch the programme. Which also means, what F1 is renowned for in this day and age, Sponsors. Which equal monies.
Even if Australia decide not to go dark, Russia is queing up with a big check, and india and china aren't far behind. Money money money.......

From practice the only thing i can really say is that the red and silver cars are still way ahead of the rest. Everything else is still a mystery. Theres Webber going super fast, BMW's not showing anything, Renault totally nowhere, a Force India up the field, its totally random! This is actually encouraging to me, it means that we could end up with Ferrari and McLaren running away with it (bit boring) but then we have an immense battle for every single other spot (amazing)!
The only other thing i can say is that it looks like spins will be more frequent. Which is cool.

Oh. My. God. The last 10mins of the third practice session was just chaos. Low end teams such as Force India and the midfield such as Red Bull, Honda, STR, BMW and Toyota just kept blowing in some pretty quick times. Most got into the 1:26s bracket (including Force India!) except for the BMWs who came first and second with mid 1:25s in the last minute.
The McLarens and Ferrais struggled with all 4 drivers above the top 10.

Ferrari didn't have a good start at all. But Massa should still be able to challenge for somthing.
I doubt Kimi will have a great race. Since catching BMW is probaly not an option seeing how fast they are. Even at that, getting through the best of the rest battle will be a hard task.
I'd say that Rosberg will probaly beat Jarno of the line, and end up having his own little race.

Vettel is becoming one hot property.
ferrari want him, BMW still have some hold on him, McLaren already tried to sign him as alonso's replacement.
Whatever happens, Vettel is going to win varios WDC

Not a good time to be a Kimi fanboy then :(, Go on 'wonder kid' fanboys have a laugh :mad: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, how i did!
You were right, Kimi is dominating, oh wait....no.....thats Hamilton. :D
Haha, its a sweet opening qualifying!
Hats off to Kubica, that was a phenomenal lap, without that mistake im sure he would have been pole, no question. Very very happy for him and i will say now if he wins it i will be just as happy as i would be if Hammy wins. Or Kovy, or Massa! My favourite 4 drivers are all on the first 2 rows!! (Apart from Button lol!)
Bad luck for Kimi (hahahaha!!) last year Massa, this year Kimi. Ferrari havnt had the best reliability record here. Think it will be hard for him to fight his way through to a decent position, but he is more than capable so it will be interesting to see how he does tomorrow.
Trulli doing well in the Toyota to get it to 6th, much better than i would have predicted.
Rosberg did well, but i just thought it would be a little quicker than it is. I thought they would be giving the BMW's a very tough time.
Webber, easially the unlickiest guy in the history of F1! Home crowd, decent car, reliable all winter, fast as anything, brilliant in practice. Brake failure puts him 14th. Why does this happen to poor Mark!?
Renault not doing well. Bad luck for them, knew they wouldnt be the top of the tree but still thought they would do better. Piquet really looking like hes struggling, 21st on the grid is probably not where i would have put him this time last month.
Vettel shining as usual in the Torro Rosso. He will be big in the future, watch this space!
Honda 10th and 12th.... WHAT?! oO 10th!! In a HONDA!! (sorry benny!) Hats off to them, thought they would be just as bad as last year, but it appears that progress has definately been made. Although how many times have we said that only for them to fall deeper and deeper into the back of the field. Really hope they can continue this into the race and the rest of the season. With Ross Brawn there, this can only be the sign of a Honda revival.
Overall, a very good, mixed up qualifying. I thought it would filter the field, showing the pace of each car, but it hasnt, its going to be a very close race in the midfield. I think Hammy will be able to win this, but i think Kubica and maybe Kovy or Massa will push him all the way. Going to be a top race!
COME ON HAMMY!!!!! :D

The Ferrari business almost sounds like the situation they had with Massa. What with supplying Sauber with engines, gearboxes, and, in season 2004, their 2003 car, they took Massa under their wing, and now look where he is.

I can't see your image Sparky!
I heard that Kimi had an issue with his fuel pump. That's why he went down to the 16th position!

yeah, it was the fuel pump regulator that broke. But he didn't reach the pits, so the marshalls had to push him, thus he couldn't continue.
The start will be so interesting. We know the McLarens are apparently fast of the line. But what of BMW and Ferrari. What of the drivers.
Who's good and bad of the line. Oo so many questions.
I doubt Renault will challenge for anything. They're clearly worse than last year. I'd say Honda and Renault are pretty on par.
While Toyota aren't doing bad. To bad for Glock though, he did so well, for a track hes never seen, and againist the quali king, Truli. Then hes been put back 10 places.
5 of those for blocking someone who didn't even set a time.

Looks like McLaren are just gonna dominate all season... yawn. I'm annoyed Raikonnen went out early as now we cant even see properly how Ferrari are against the rest, as well as the fact I want him to win.
And why did Kubica have to mess up his lap, he could've put Hamilton down to 2nd!

^Yes you're right. He lost some time in a corner because he overdone it. In this lap he was flying!

But i think the big question is, can BMW keep it up. I mean they had a similar quali last year.
But I personally think this is different. Who knows, if BMW can be consistent during the races, we may just have a 3 way battle on our hands
