Neither. I owned an E46 M3 and they are cool, but I'm not sure they're worth their asking price ($47100, and leather's optional). S4s are really cool too, but I have the same problem - they're expensive as heck - $45700 is a lot of cash for 5.6 to 60 and handling that can be matched for less cash (or you can get more stuff for the same cash, like with an Infiniti M45). Truly, if I was looking at a new M3 and a new S4, I'd probably end up buying either a C43 AMG, a last-gen S4 Avant, or a new S60R.

Right....you say the M3 is expensive as heck and not worth it...you have a clk55, those cost $70,000+ and they aren't faster than an M3, i'm lost....

As far as the topic is concerned, S4...Less frantic and a tad more relaxed...

The M3 made me a religous man. The only explanation that I can think of, is that god created the car with the perfect balance of handling, performance, and while keeping it N/A.

I bought the CLK when I lived in New York and required an automatic transmission, not to mention I wanted a smoother ride, better acceleration, and more features than the M3 offers. And I'm not trading it in because it's the best car I've ever owned. Regardless, I have money to spend. For an average person, I don't see the draw of spending that much when you can get similar handling and acceleration thrills for considerably less money. The badge probably has a lot to do with it - not BMW, but M, which has more draw than S.

igaboj: Why didn't you include the C55 AMG?

don't tell people what they should've included in their copmparos, what's in the comparo's is totally up to the creater [inthis case, igaboj] maybe he's looking at buying one of those two, who knows....

No stick shift.

But it's got one of the better automatics in the world. Unless you were truly proficient with a manual, you couldn't accelerate any better.

What the hell? I didn't tell him anything. I asked a very valid question, which would be significantly MORE valid if he was looking to buy one of them. He gave me a very acceptable answer. I'm happy, he's happy, you're being an idiot. Stop

Sport-ier at the very least.. sure, theres one point where and sequentials are better when you're talking obscenely high speed.. but you lose that connection with the car, when you sacrifice your stick.

and btw.. it was funny.. i burst out laughin really. :)

I agree only that you lose the connection with the car - Mercedes automatics kick ass in all regards, and I support their decision to effectively phase out manual transmissions.

Auto's have their advantages, especailly when your jammed up in the CBD.
IMO, Mercedes should have a manual option in their AMG cars and sports coupes. Although i reckon most people who would by those cars will still opt for auto but there's bound to be purist that will not driving anything with 'D' on the stick.

I think Merc should introduce manuals back into the range not just making it available in the lower classes (i.e C180)

now...back to the topic.
I voted for the S4 because I generally like Audi's. Especially the RS's

At least Mercedes has manuals on the coupe/sedan versions of C320, C230, C240, and SLK 350.. something to be glad for.

as for merc.s with auto's, i'm sad, just because my dad would be driving a mercedes sl600 right now, had it been offred with a 6spd. he says that driving it was just too boring

I could never imagine the M3 being a Saloon. But, if it was my money, then I'd have the BMW. Just because it drives better than the Audi. But, it depends on my life-style in about 5 years time. For example:

If u live with ur Girlfriend and have a little house in london woth a well paid job, then the M3 it is. However, if u have a big house with a very well paid job, a wife and kids, then its the S4, S4 Avant actually!

Surely you didn't write this.

Believe it or not, just because you haven't posted it doesn't mean he hasn't seen it.

I've seen it time and again, and I haven't seen someone find it funny in months - by now, I thought, it had made its rounds on the web, sort of like "you're the man now, dog."

I could never imagine the M3 being a Saloon.

I'm having the same problem. I imagine a 330i Sport, or something, whenever I try to think of a current M3 sedan. That said, I think the M3 sedan should come back.

[copy-paste what Attaus said]

The M3 is one of the best cars ever created, IMHO. I'm sure the S4 is one hell of a car too, but I'm positive it can't reach the handling or the quality of the engine of the M3.

As for the Benz, no automatic-for-old-people car for me, thanks...
