So I finally got around to doing a somewhat proper photoshoot of my car, a VW GTI. Taken in a little park in Melbourne, FL, it was only my second time taking photos with my new camera -- a Nikon D40. Enjoy!

They don't require a front license plate in Florida, no?

Jan 26, 2008, 6:04 PM
Nope. Front plates are pretty much up to you if you want one and any design works for most states.
I wouldn't be surprised if they required them in the future, traffic light cameras are starting to pop up in most places.

hmmm why is the American GTI so high off the ground? Amrican regulations? Euro specs ride a couple of inches lower

Ah c'mon, all these lucky people with lovely Golf GTI's and they don't even know the correct way it's spelt - it's GTI not GTi. GTi is Peugeot! :D
Nice pictures there, though, mate! What's that black thing on the front of the bonnet? :-k

Not sure, but I know that lowering is one thing many owners do to their cars. I don't plan on it since the roads here are so screwed up with potholes and odd entrances and exits that have dips in them.

Aaaah! You got me, I honestly thought they were both GTi's.
And the black thing is the top part of the front bra/car shield/whatever you want to call it. The bottom part is in my trunk since it doesn't look very good and is a pain to get on with one person.

Very nice dude. You have some good shots.
Your pictures make me like the MK5s a little more. They are slowly growing on me.
You plan on doing anything to it? Reflash or anything?

They stop the front end to start 'deforming' :D

I'm not sure if you're wanting a little comments and criticism on your photos, but i'll just go ahead and say them anyway.... First off, if you were actually like trying to have a "serious" photoshoot then take the bra off for the shoot (actually just take it off completely, it doesn't look good imo). also, i dislike how part of the car has shade and some has light, it looks sloppy. and also the backgrounds of the shots are pretty busy and distract from the car itself. Try some "exciting" angles too, give the viewer some variety.

Nothing in the near future, except for tinting the windows. I have thought about putting in a few minor modifications, but I don't really have much planned.

Very helpful for my weekend drives from college back home - I have to drive through Florida swampland, construction areas, and the highway. The few times that the car hasn't had the bra on, it resulted in dents in the paint. Usually I keep the whole thing on all the time, but after a car wash, it is nearly impossible to put it on by yourself, hence why only the top part is on. I also love the way it looks, but that's just me, apparently.

I honestly didn't expect to get anyway, but yeah, thanks!
And it wasn't a really "serious" photoshoot, more like a somewhat-serious one. I originally wanted to take photos of the car while it was still daylight, but by the time I got to a decent location, it was already sunset. Basically, I wanted to try and get some interesting and different photos (for me), so there are a few other subjects that I didn't post.
Also, I get what you are saying about exciting angles, but what kinds should I go for? I did take a lot more photos than what you see here, but I decided that the others weren't really my best shots. Who knows, I could be missing the right ones.

yea i was kind of vague when i said exciting angles... i guess by that i mean a few of your shots of the whole car are kind of your standard, whole car photos. My suggestion would maybe try taking a photo a little lower to the ground, or you know maybe capture a side of the car that isn't expected, and also just kind of play around with twisting the camera for some angles (although not too exciting, you don't want the reader to experience vertigo :P ). Also, maybe just look around on some online portfolio's and see there shots. PM me if you need me to give you a few good ones. Hope that helps, and again, this might just be a little side hobby and you don't plan to make it go any further than that.

Well, it's a side hobby right now, but it probably will become part of a profession, I'm not sure. And I am eager to get learning, since taking photography is serious now that I have the equipment.
I checked around for some online portfolios and found one that seems pretty good: Here we are (http://dejz0r.deviantart.com/gallery/)
Granted, I would love to have a wide angle lens like him, but I can settle for two regular ones for a while. Tell me if that's the kind of automotive photography I should be aiming for.

i've only just seen this thread!
Some nice pics in that selection, can see you've taken some thought into it.
The pics on that guy's site are good, but a lot of photoshop work has gone into them and t oget low photos of cars driving you need a driver, and be bold enough to take photos close to the floor from a moving vehicle.
I've done it from an Elise at relative speeds and it was quite entertaining, but not the safest thing in the world!!
Its interesting you saying you'd like to go pro. Its something I have also decided I would like to do, I started making a website tonight and its nearly finished in an attempt to try get a couple of the better pics 'out there'. My idea is, in July this year I will be 21 and in August I will have had 3 years experience in the motor trade, so I will have a good back ground for me to consider moving on, and perhaps persue photography for a couple of years and see where it takes me...
All I can say is good luck for you, you're taking the right sort of steps I hope (as its the route i've taken!!).
Oh, for your last question, yes you can aim for that, but dont be dis-heartened if you have to settle for other photography first!
Still have you in consideration for Celebration Exotic Cars, havent forgotten!

Well, I was looking at the angles of the shots, not necessarily the motion, etc. I don't think I would be insane enough to hang outside of a car to get photos (I've seen people do it) unless I was getting paid, haha!
I don't think I'll end up being a "Photographer" per se but ideally an Automotive Photo/Journalist. I really love journalism and have always loved cars, so a few steps here and there are kind of giving me the position for doing that and I just see Photography as an asset to have by the time I start looking for jobs.
We'll see though, I'm in a Mech. Eng. major right now and am hoping to get it switched to Communications. The only thing I'm not good with is photography with people, for some reason I just cannot take photos of people. Odd huh?

not at all, I never have been able to, and I was just talking about this this morning to a friend at work that I cannot do people photos.
Although I put it down to my shyness, it may be something more than that, I dont know, but you're not the only one!!

There's just something that irks me about kind of invading other people's privacy. Far away shots of crowds don't bother me because they become a part of the scene, it's the candid shots that seem a little weird.
Granted, portrait photography is completely different, at least there is some bit of acceptance with that.

cars, landscapes & architechture and wildlife are the things I enjoy and seem to do ok with :)

I'm the same, architecture and landscapes are what I usually do.
Although I really want to get into urban photography, you know, bridges, roads, cities, alleyways, dumpsters, street signs, etc.
