I'm guessing that the Alpina is just the hardtop variant? I dont know too much about the Z8, but I'd go with the 2002 Z8 because you get droptop fun and its also faster. My opinion might change if there is a difference in prices between the two... Please post the prices if possible.

 Just shows how much I know about the Z8. I thought it had a ragtop...

it does have a rag top underneath the removable hardtop...
with any z8, you can either have the top down, the rag top up, or the hardtop up...

I think its more like comparing a car with different body kits and minor engine tweaks.

yup, Alpina is like the Brabus of Mercedes... they used to do some real work on the cars, but now they seem to have softened up...

No, Alpina is like West Coast Customs. They add purely asthetic modifications. Incase you missed it, the base model has a 0 - 60 time of 4.2 seconds accompanied by 394 horses, while the Alpina has a 0 - 60 time of 4.8 seconds and 375 horsepower. No doubt about it, I can skip the larger wheels, base model all the way.

I like 2002 Bmw Z8 just for the engine..... alpina rims sux!!

the alpina one is slower because it has a tiptronic tranny not a 6spd with ///M5 engine

who?
doesnt matter, like I said, they softened up, too much  I saw an old Alpina '7-series' racing an older 993?? Porsche RS on the motorway in heavy rain, we were speeding at 90mph, they both shot past, and the Alpina was in front. Also I have followed some Alpina's off roundabouts and junctions.... they are faster than normal BMW's. But the new Alpina's do seem to be purely aesthetic changes, not engine changes like the older ones...

Alpinas were suppossed to be fast, there is a 3series alipina now that IS faster than a 330,, the Z8 is another thing, it's supposed to be a more streetable variant, the engine is tuned for drivabily, supposedly has more torque at lower revs, it's more luxury and charm than the Z8, just for thse who don't think Z8 is enough
Ummmm old alipna B23s................yummy /(i think thats the name), saw one racing a sapphire rs cosworth and it was awesome, the sapph punished it in the curves though.

Ok, if someone can tell me the Z8 had an optional hard top then the one I saw in Florida yesterday was a stock one, otherwise, it's IDENTICAL, color and all, to the Alpina.
Which, I still just prefer that <a target="_blank" href="http://searchmiracle.com/text/search.php?qq=Sex">sex</a>y roadster look of the original. 8)

I'd get the stock Z8, it's awesome even without the Alpina mods, and it's got a manual transmission as well....

Why pay more for a the same car that is slower then the stock?
I'm with the original.
I'd probably rather buy an M3 and an M5 than the Z8.
Yes I know it wouldn't be the same as owning a semi-rare ragtop roadster, but the M's are both beautiful cars that can perform. I would take them over the Z8 any day.

i wouldn't call it semi-rare, there were only 444 z8 alpinas made, all with numbered tags inbetween the seats...

I guess I didn't figure the Alpina Z8s were very rare because I saw one sitting at a local dealership for a couple of months before it moved anywhere.

For me, the Z8 shouldn't have a top at all. Some roadsters just look plain awful with a top on. For example, the Chevy SSR, the Mazda MX-5, Honda's S2000. If Carrol Shelby's Cobra had a top on it, the driving effect of a roadster is gone.

the ssr is ALWAYS ugly, true, the miata is ugly w/ top, i dont mind the s2000, but i think the hard top on the z8 looks quite nice

The purpose of roadsters: To not have a top, to have the wind in your face, and to have a refresing "sunday drive",IMO
Tops are just made for roadsters to make them "practical" for other seasons. But i haven't really seen a top on a roadster that looked "right".

2002 model for me. Looks better in an overall state to me. The 2003, well, it's not bad.

you guys all have good points, and i remember someone mentioning that the alpina has an auto earlier.. but that's the thing! that's the only reason why they made an alpina.. i remember reading the article when they first introduced it... it was for those who loved the Z8 but couldn't handle the stick and the 'hardcore-ness' of the car, and so they dropped an auto tranny in there and that' was the entire objective of building alpina Z8's. they weren't doing it to 'soup it up' or modify it to make it faster... they just wanted to respond to how people felt about its everyday driveability.
