Hey I am going to get a car some time next year and was hoping for some advice on a starter car. The car should be under $5000 and a reliable car would do. I don't want it to be fast(quick) since its going to be my first car. So, what do you guys think would be a nice first car? Thanks for all the help:)

He said reliable.

I'll second the Honda. Spring for a 98 Accord. You wont regret it. :)

This is posted twice? Anyway, with the understanding that you are close to me, geographically, there is a nice used 3-series here in Palatine for sale, just down the street from my house. I have stopped and looked at it and would buy in a heartbeat if I needed another car. Right now I have four cars including my wifes, so, there is no need.
I dont have the dealer details, but I believe they were asking $3,800 and I believe its an 1988, or 1989. I can get additional details if you would be interested.

Thanks for all the replies, and the bmw, how many miles on the car? I was actually thinking of an eclipse or something. Are daewoo cars nice as a first car because i don't know anything about them. My mom has a 02 accord and she isn't giving it up. So, i want to drive the car until its dead.

EDIT - What do you guys think of this?http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=230188798&dealer_id=612290&car_year=1998&model=JET&num_records=&systime=1193931574288&make2=&start_year=1990&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=used&distance=25&marketZipError=false&search_lang=en&make=VOLKS&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchfor m&min_price=2000&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=60107&advanced=&end_year=2008&doors=&transmission=&max_price=4000&cardist=11

I'll have to stop by the lot and have a look. It'll have to be Friday.

Are you serious?

I would say Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra and 240sx, VW Jetta or Golf, Mazda Protege or Protege5, or a late BMW e30 325i.

If you want reliability go with civic or accord but if you want some looks too then go with the eclipse.

i personally would recommend a Civic or an Accord (esp. 5th gen) for more torque, like this http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&pageNumber=3&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=ascending&sortfield=YEAR+ascending%2CYEAR+descendi ng&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7CE-%7CM-_18_%7CD-_212_%7CN-N%7CR-500%7CI-1%7CP-YEAR+ascending%2CYEAR+descending%7CQ-ascending%7CZ-60712&aff=national&paId=135095969&recnum=168&leadExists=true

A civic would be a good one

If you want something that looks way better you could get a Pontiac Grand Am or Grand Prix

You could also get a Mitsubishi Lancer

If you want a Civic I'll sell you mine for around that. It's in Cincinnati, Ohio. I can also transport it to Bloomington, Indiana.
