View Full Version : Which is easier RWD or FWD ????

this question is for the people who experienced them both....
my opinion is that FWD is easier for beginners couse u control driftting with the pushing on the gas peddle ...
while in the RWD its more tricky and u must get used to it first.... when done properly the handling becomes better, and u can take corners with a great controled drift ....
whats ur opinion about that ??
and what do u prefer??

My appenion is FWD..
because īt is easier to handle..
I have only drived 2 cars..
But i do think that FWD is best for
should we call it "Newbees"

for beginners on the road?
It would make little to no difference. At road speeds, and doing normal road going things, you;d be pushed to tell if a car was FWD or RWD.
Unless its really really wet, and you would skid around more so in a RWD car.
Its at high spped that you tell the difference - and obviously RWD is better there.

im not talking about normal speed....
for example i almost never apply to the speed limit ! so what...(not that its a good thing)
but sometimes people do cross the line ... and when u have a FWD its easier to handling in the corners......
i had a bad experience with a RWD car when i was younger i had the license for 3 month .. and i couldnt handle a one line road drift.... !!
when ur experienced u the RWD is better for handling and gives u more pleasure in driving ..... i wasn't talking about which is better...... it was which is easier......
and i still think that the FWD is easier for unexperienced drivers..... when the car slips or drifts u can handle it with a push on the gas even in an automatic gear....
in the RWD u would have to be more presice with ur handling couse a little mistake in a high speed would send u to ......... !!!!

well at high sppeds; I think its just that FWD understeers,
so i think it would be more predictable.
Whilst RWD would oversteer, less predictable but you turn quicker/sharper.
Therefore as said before a beginner would feel more comfortable in a FWD car.

I have a lot of xperience on rwd, but now with my Alfa im gaining also on fwd. I believe that even for a beginner rwd r better, provided that the car is easy controlled, f.e mazda mx-5. This car can teach you how to drift, very predictable and very easy controlled. And as far as safety is concerned rwd r better cause they r more easy to handle. Now if we r speaking for rwd 20 years ago(ford escort mkII, or Alfa's or bimmers then things r different)

my experience was 3.5 hald years ago...
its was in a 94 BMW 735i automatic....it was hard drifting in corners at high speed ...
i had the license for 3 months..........
and when i drove FWD it was easier to understrear and drifting....

You're right about that mate...
one day when my dad was in college, he had an escort, and he was driveing quite fast, around 60mph, and had to swerve to avoid an tractor coming on to the road. He swerve and hammered the brakes (so not the right thing to do). The car just pitched into the road, and spun out into the hedge. A case of bad driving with a horrible handling car equals a broken rib and 2 weeks in hosptial

i think that before 10 years not 20 !
before there was any stability systems it was pretty hard controoling an understeer and drinfting in RWD ... specially if its a big car (lengt) and surely if its automatic !

No man..believe me 20 or more years ago things were much more difficult...I'm talking from my own xperience, with old cars.

No nothing has ever happened Thank God, it's just that i see from the Alfa which is rwd how much more easily can it slide,( if you think it there it goes :D), than the Bimmer which is new. Even with the systems off the bimmer doesn't slide so easy as the Alfa.

i live in canada and only if u had seen what had happened to me in my 1990 jetta this winter would have made u gasp and put u in disbelief
i was driving home form a buddys place around 1 am, i was on the high way and doing around 125 kph . i knowthe highway well as i take it everyday and i was on an on ramp to connect with another highway. i know the highway like the back of my hand. i know where are the bumps, ruts catch basin covers, dirst build ups u name it. for good ness sake i know where the cracks in the road are form natural wear on the road. i was coming underneath an over pass when i started to brake to slow for the transfer when all of a sudden i started to slide and i felt massive understeer cause i started to turn on the tranfer the car was still doing 110 and the car went into a crazy slide i went back on the gas just a little to try and straighten her out but it was already to late the car was sliding all the way, on the outside was a concrete wall and on the inside was a grass field with an opening of a bout 45 feet and i managed to put the car in there with i guess the help of god cause nothing else would make sense at that time cause it only took a fraction of a second for all this to take place . my front end sliding side ways was about 6 inches form a bearier when i managed to hit the grass perfectly sideways and i thought that was it i was gonna die and roll over, and ill be frank my jetta outer skin feels like butter and i new i was gonna get pretty messed up but the car didnt roll at that speed which was unbelievable. i thank got for that day all that happened was i had to pull tall grass and weeds form my front grill. i swear guys craziest **** that ever happend to me when i was behind the wheel or int the car.
i think if i was in a rear wheel drive car i would of hit the outside concrete bearier.
what do u guys think?

lol
I know the feeling of that 0 well close to it anyway...
We had an Audi 80 about 8/9 years ago, and my brother woho had just passed his test (literally that morning). He was going far too fast, and we went over a hill and the car "took off". The car got really ligght, and the steering got really light. We swerved left and right, and missed an oncoming car by no more than 1metre (sounds alot, but at aorunf 90mhp it isnt really). The oncoming car recognised the car, and later that night we got a balls-ing from out mum and dad, for what happened.
We didnt have a seat belt on, and the other car was filled with people ( children as well)
I mean it scary to think of what could have happened.
This story doesnt sound scary but when you come that close to death ( <--- im being serious) it really makes you think again about speeding and not wearing you seat beat.
Me, Im a model driver. [/i]

i know exactly what u mean
White-Night
Jun 04, 2003, 6:21 PM
i know what u meen ...
i didnt really have problems with sliding or understeer in 120 km ... not in a high way but in a regular (we dont have any) ...but i think the power in the car have much of effect..
if u have more power in the car the understeer becomes more controlable ...!
but hay i wont do **** when theres ice and snow!

Hell... I have never driven (I mean to really drive , not just to move around...) a RWD... I have driven just FWD's and AWD's... so I can't really tell which one is easier...
You cannot achieve true four wheel drift in a FF car, maybe with the hand brake, but not by using the throttle. This where some of the allure of FF cars come from, they are better suited for the masses because their pulling wheels mean less crazy stuff, and lots of understeer. The very physics of FF cars prevents them from truly drifting, and create a much more stable car. Now, FR cars are much more unpredictable, and can easily drift or go out of control. This is fun, but dangerous in the hands of an amateur. More performance can be squeezed out of FR (or MR or RR for that matter), this is why all the true performance cars are rear wheel drive. AWD or 4WD is a viable alternative, arguably combining the positive aspects of both set ups. Understeer is the dominant characteristic, but oversteer can be easily coaxed, and encouraged- with a wide open throttle and quite a bit of courage (this is counter-intuitive). So, it all depends on what you want to do, or rather, what you want the car to do.
Forgive me for any factual errors...

Forgive me for any factual errors...
nah everything sounds right!
Anyway the best set-up I am aware of is the murcielago - with 4WD, mid engine. But the gearing of the car allows upto 95% of the torque to go to the rear wheels - so I think this idea truly is the best of both. front (sort of) wheel drive is you need it - rear wheel drive if you need it, and 4 wd the rest. 8)

FWD is better for new drivers, because a FWD car is easier to control and does not drift easily. However, once you get the hang of it and you're a good driver, I would recommend switching to RWD, because it's more fun
AWD is also excellent and provides a better grip.

I think that RWD is defiently better, besides mainly American cars make RWD, like the upcoming 2004 GTO. That car is going to rock. its on my list of cars to buy
