If you think this is a Mercedes comparison then back out now, this is much much more. Two cars and two cousins, and you get to decide the victor. But to be a little more serious and to stop hyping this up I'm gunna get down to business... My cousin(MattMerce) and I are both car buffs and get to talking smack to one another, nothing serious, its all in good fun. And we dont cruise around in your crappy Supra or RX-7, oh no. We hit the streets hard with our '98 Volkswagen Golf GL and our '93 Honda Civic EX. And since we both get to drive pretty soon I figured this would be the perfect time and place to settle this once and for all. Here are the sick numbers, try not to sh*t yourself...

'93 Honda Civic EX sedan:
1.6L 4-cylinder V-TEC engine
HP: 125
Torque: 106 lb-ft
HP per Litre: 78.125
Miles to date: about 182k
Weight: at least 2500lbs :)
Worth as of 2 years ago: Maybe a few hundred bucks, but to me its priceless...

'98 Volkswagen Golf GL
2.0L 4-cylinder
HP: 115
Torque: 122 lb-ft
HP per Litre: 57.5
Miles to date: about 82k
Weight: at least 2600lbs :)
Worth as of 2 years ago: $7k

I'm leaving the pics up to Matt so that this is somewhat fair.
And now its up to u all to decide "who would win." I'd like to compare straight line (1/4 mile ok?), cornering, and of course style. Oh and get ready for one of the most exciting slow races of your life! Let the cousin car bashing and dissing begin, but keep it clean and in good fun...

The weights are off.. the Civic is atleast 2500 and the Golf is atleast 2600. Wow. You guys are big pimpin' in those hot rides. J/K. Those are not bad starter cars. Personally, I am partial to a Golf because I am sick of hearing about Civics although it is not a bad car.. Will it win in a straight line? I have no idea.. But whoever owns the Golf needs to watch the suspension.. carefully.. Was the V-TEC available in 1993?

BTW, this is post #700. :o

Ok I'll fix the weights. And no we dont have our licenses, I was joking about hitting the streets and stuff. I get my permit in 4 months Matt gets his in a few weeks. And yea as far as I know the V-Tec was available in '93. I'll look around to confirm this theory...

He means we will, I get my permit in 2 weeks and he gets his in December.

Anyway here's the golf, picture this black and with about 16inch rims since they'll be added soon:

The civic, but imagine it red with stock rims and no car bra:

But whoever owns the Golf needs to watch the suspension.. carefully..I know, it's extremely low to the ground. The golf as well has a moon roof, it has the stock spoiler too.

None taken. Its not like either car is gunna go all that fast lol. Matt, you may own the most powerful SUV and 4-wheel drive vechicle in the Mercincavage family with your fancy Kia Sportage  but when it comes to our cars I'm not budging. Civic for me, like I have a choice...

Only disadvantages for the Civic: too old and TOO many miles. :?

Age isn't really a problem with cars like those two, just wear and tear. If you got the choice between two cars with 150k mileson one and half as much on the other. One was beaten daily but cared for religiously. Whereas the other was driven lightly but cared for only once in a while. You should get the one with the better care. But in this case, I have a feeling that's not the case with the Civic. But dude, go to a Walmart and pick up yourself some of those *fiiiiine* plastic 15-inch "chrome" "rims". I did it once to my friends Civic, and put a folgers can on its muffler, heheh.

Both cars have been well taken care of. The Civic was my dad's at first, then my sister's so it's a little beat up but was looked after and runs just fine. I see me taking it past 200k miles before I ditch it for something else. But I will admit that I am going to need to get the Civic detailed. It just has your average "high school kid's car" dirtyness, an easy fix...

The golf is in fine condition too. We bought it used about 2 years ago for my sister, the person who sold it to us cried as we drove away  It's also pretty clean since my sister cleared it out before she left for college.

I finally found something to back up my VTEC claim:
"The top-rung EX 4-door carried a 1.6-liter four with variable valve timing, plus antilock brakes."
Not the best site in the world to draw information from but it was the 1st place I found it...

SpeedMuse

As far as I know it runs fine. I remember there being a problem with the muffler a little while back, but that was fixed. And yeah when there was a problem it was loud as hell and sounded terrible... all in the past now thankfully...

This might be considered bringing back an older topic, but I finally got the Civic from my sister. Today I started cleaning it and figured at some point I should take some digital pics. I post some soon.

Anyways the # of miles on the Civic is 182k. It ran fine for the entire 6 hour trip home from Boston. That's it...

I'll take my permit test this weekend. Hopefully my camera will get fixed or replaced soon so I can take pics of the golf.

Intimidating, huh?
Well with some cleaning, slight modding, and other work this car could work out just fine for me...

My Golf actually does have pretty nice rims, 15s I think but that's plenty big on a car that size in my opinion. They're seven spokes. I don't have any pics of though, hopefully I'll get a digital to borrow sometime soon.
