Very tempted to put the monkey sign up right here, give it a place of designated honour, :p
My jeep is 18 years old
I am 18 years old
I love music. My jeeps system is both out dated and partially not functioning
put 1 2 and 3 together and you get, Me wants a new system
Here's the technicalities. I work my ass off for my money (as many of us do, or have done) and I dont intend to throw it all away just for my listening pleasure's
I do not require the volume to go through the roof, or even outside the vehicle for that matter. The bass need be sufficeint for sound only, "feeling" it (ie having it vibrate the bolts loose) isn't nessacary
With out doing anything custom the stock locations allow for 4 mids. I belive there's a couple tweeters in the dash, but I couldnt know for sure without attmepting to remove it
I'll be going to car toys unless told otherwise and haveing them install it for 2 reasons. Lifetime garuantee, and if something is messed up, I ***** to them about it instead of kicking myself in the balls for my own mistakes.
mids are about 5 inchs in diameter I think. I dont want to need an amp, and I do need a new deck.
I've been in there and tried to talk to them, but they didnt give me the kind of answer I was looking for. Rather they looked around and pointed at the speakers with the lowest price tags.
I'm willing to dish out, if I must, 500 dollars for this.
Keep in mind, all I want is a decent system to replace my outdated stock one. Nothing fancy, no flashing lights, definatly not trying to win any decibal contests. I just want good qaulity sound at a not too expensive price, something that will last and work and keep my happy.
if I havent given you all the answers you need to give me a good response, feel free to ask away

Try ordering from Crutchfield.com and installing them yourself. That's what I did. I spent a good $500 or more replacing my entire sound system in my van... Two Polk 5.25's in the dash, Polk 5x7's in the front doors, Polk 6x9's in the rear panel, Panasonic headunit, and a 10" 200 watt Bazooka tube subwoofer. And it sounds awesome. The sub isn't like what you typically hear on ricer Honda's blaring down the street... You really can't tell outside of your car, but inside it hits pretty hard. The Bazooka tube is $300 and has a built in amp. I don't have any amps, my speakers are all running off my headunit and my sub has it's own amp.
Ordering from Crutchfield is really easy... You tell them what kind of car you have, and they tell you what fits and you can sort it by reviews/best seller/etc. Then it comes with an instruction sheet specifically for your car and tells you how to replace the speakers, and it also comes with adapters incase you need one for the speaker plugs. Installation costs are absolutely rediculous... Circuit City wanted over $200 to install just my sub, and all that needed to be done really was drill a hole in my firewall and run some wires to the back of my CD deck which I did myself... so yea.
Hope that helps somewhat :p

I know it's not all that difficult, but wiring and all that is not my cup of tea. and it literally is a freaking maze of wires under the dash and behind the head unit. I'd get lost in no time.
If I spend enough I think car toys will do it for free, otherwise It's only like 80 bucks or so
and I'm going to try and beat them down on that by removing all the door panals myself. will take me about 10 minutes, but they could charge as much as 50 bucks or more. I think anyways. I'd take out the old system too if they'd let me, but I don't think they would.
biggest factor though is going to be me being a hardass and telling them, look, don't wanna do it that way? fine I'll go somewhere else.
I mean, I know I'm not putting 10 thousand into the car here, but all I'm stilla customer and if they dont want to cut me some slack then I'll mention the better bussiness burea (spelling?) and either they'll except a bad report, or they'll wait on my hands and feet

Any stores that seem to be like "West Coast Customs" can get you ready and have nice sound! But since budget is an issue, just go to bestbuy!

Go to Crutchfield.com, sort the speakers by what fits your Jeep and stuff, and then find the best sellers/ones that have good reviews, pick them out by price, then go to wherever you want to get them from and see if they have them.

Those are actually 5.25" units. If you don't want to get into amps, caps, and crossovers then all you need is a good cd head unit and 4 speakers. Make sure that it's a CD Receiver (not a tuner... they don't have internal amps) with a decent power output. You don't need a subwoofer for what you want.
Circuit City is actually a good place for basic stuff....
Something like a high end Pioneer or JVC. Speakers... I'd put Polk Audio Momo 5 1/4's in each spot. Those are probably some of the best speakers you can get without going up to component sets.

I'd go Sony all round tbh, ive got Sony Head Unit, Sony 50cms at the front, Sony 10" Sub, i had sony 6x9s onl my parcel shelf but my dad broke them so ive got JVC ones now, you dont need much for a good audio system, with what ive got its loud as hell and is as clear as a bell.

I like you Hyphon so I won't talk too much crap about Sony but if I were to meter your system you'd crap if you saw the frequency response.
Anyway Car Buff... stay away from Sony. I've been deeply involved in audio since the days when Sony WAS one of the best...

that makes me so happy to hear that :p lol
ive always thought Sony Speakers were good? maybe not, i have to say though my JVCs are better than my old Sonys though. but they did cost twice as much :)

In life you don't always get what you pay for...
With audiophile and high end audio equipment, if you stay away from the fads, you generally get your money's worth.
Places like West Coast Customs and Unique Autosports do great work... on tv... there are hundreds of installation shops that cost a fourth of what those places do AND do better work.
Don't always think that the popular 'name brands' are anywhere near the best. The best equipment is usually hand built, limited in production, and somewhat expensive (though not always... Orion makes one of the best 12" subs around... for under 100 bucks). Because of this they're not the most well known names and people tend to under rate them. Not everyone knows who Nakamichi is but anyone who's seriously into audio will know... They're the best. In most things there's never one 'best'... Nakamichi is that exception.
Anyway, don't take what I said wrong. There's nothing bad about Sony... I just wouldn't recommend them anymore.

yeah, sony is for playstations and tvs far as I'm concerned
only big name foriegn brand I like that I know of is Hamman/Karmon (spelling, I cant always remember the name)
I duno about circuit city though, will they install it and garuantee it for life? connecting the speakers and all I could do that easy. but the head unit, and replacing the 20 year old wires (which I want done, just cause), not me. I could do alot of things I havent had the chance to pull off yet, but this isnt one of them

Wiring is a lot trickier to do right than people think.
Circuit City should warranty it. If not go to Best Buy.
It's Harmon/Kardon and they're some of the best audiophile and high end equipment around... especially for home theaters. They make low end budget stuff as well but even it's pretty good.

lol... You don't need a 225 dollar head unit and imho I'd stay away from Alpine heads (their speakers are brilliant but their head units are made by Kenwood).
Here Car Buff (if you decide to go to Car Toys):
Pioneer Premier DEH-P390MP - it's a cd player that plays pretty much everything... mp3, wma, etc... $150.00
Infinity Reference 5012i 5.25" two way speakers - great full range speakers. I've heard these before and they're just below the Kappa series in quality... $80.00/pair
That's $310.00 for the speakers and head unit... Add whatever the installation is and it should be less than $500.00...
btw... those prices are from Car Toys.

right on monkey, thanks a bunch.
I tried taking the head unti it out myself, and forsome reason all the wires that are connected to it are like, from the head unit, that go out to connect to everything else. so I'd have to discconect from the source, wherever the hell that is, and pull the wire out. definatly dont want to mess around with it.
So, I'll shop circuit city first, see what the deal is, and then go to car toys, see what they'll charge me, compare contrast and what not, and select.

Cool... I did some checking and the stock wiring harness for that Jeep is a pain in the ass. Circuit City should have some decent prices for a basic head/speaker installation.

alpine heads are the best, there not made from kenwood. sony sucks too, stay away from then, they have powerful stuff but i kno for a fact that it will NOT last more than 6months. Pioneer is good, infinity is alright but alpine vs infinity is a pretty good match

no offense dude, but your word against monkeys, I'll take monkeys word for it
if he knows more about sound systems and audio than he does about vehicles, he's the guy I want to talk about sound systems to, consdering his plethora of knowledge about cars basically got him modship, to know about speakers than engines? hands down, he wins

i wasnt trying to compete with him and i totally understand why you would go to someone who you trust with car audio, i was just mentioning one thing about the alpine head units. and he does have more knowledge and skills in the audio world, dont think i was trying to not aknolodge that.

Pioneer is good, infinity is alright but alpine vs infinity is a pretty good matchAlpine head units are far from being the best in the audiophile world. Maybe at Unique Whips but not in the high end field. Just because their customers are celebrities doesn't mean they use the best equipment. Unique, as well as a large majority of 'custom' shops, are sponsored...
So, you know that Sony stuff won't last more than 6 months? That's interesting. I don't like, promote, or endorse Sony in any way but as far as basic consumer equipment goes they're not that bad.
It's funny that you say that about Infinity. Do you have even a small clue as to how many awards Infinity has won? Or how many contests they have dominated? Hmmm... or how many records their equipment's broken?
And yes, Kenwood Electronics assembles Alpine's head units... Sorry.

While on the subject, if you have, say a pioneer deck and a face plate that has no audio in, can you get a faceplate that does have audio in without getting a new deck? Otherwise I'll just have to burn some MP3 cds and be angry at the nob who thought removing the aerial and killing reception from both the radio and my itrip would be worth the decreased drag.

I used to have a jeep like Car Buff's and i replaced the stock head unit with a sony one (which broke fairly quickly) so I had to replace that one too. I've spent more time than I felt like it inside the dashboard re-wiring crap, and I know how much of a pain trying to wire an older car like that to a new head unit is.

If i were you I would try cheecking out ebay first. thats where i got my two 12" subs (alpine) and my 2200 wat amp with all the cords for under 300 with shipping and everything...

Sep 21, 2007, 11:56 AM
Cords???? lol
Now you just need a car to put it in. Why would you buy Alpine subs? What kind of amp? I'm just curious because you will NOT find a true 2200 watt amp for that cheap. Not even on Ebay...
