I wonder how high that engine could rev. It sounds like it's reving higher than the V8s they use now.

If it's a 1994 version, I'm guessing around an 18,000rpm redline? Back in 2004 and in Brazil 2006, engines were hitting a mind-boggling 20,000rpm.

Wow, they just sound so nice, probably sounds even better than the current engines! Just listen to the noise after they work their way up the gears! Nice find.

It sounds like 24,000rpm, but I don't think they had the technology for that back in the 90's. I'll do some research.

well if you listen to it for too long then it does get a little bit irritating.... personally i like street cars and high performance cars engines, i dont usually like F1 engines... theyre a bit too high and pitched up too much... anyways the engine sounds alright.

Jesus H Christ hearing the sounds while looking at still pictures makes it sound like the sounds are coming from ghost cars or something! Very nice clip.

I doubt it's higher than 19k rpm, but its sounds like it's pushing it.

i always ask myself the question; why do F1 cars from just over a decade ago look so dated compared to the ones nowadays? it's really wierd... how much BHP did the V12 F1's of the 90's have? nowadays they only have a measly 750bhp from the 2.4-litre V8's compared to the crazy 1500bhp turbocharged 1.5-litres in the 1980's! although, 750bhp is amazing from a naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre V8... but they do really lack torque. they ahve like 250 lb/ft lol.

bennyboy
Apr 08, 2007, 4:38 PM
^More like 750lb ft. :p

They look so dated because technology moves so fast in F1. Even 2006 cars look like whaaa? Because the nosecones/sidepods/bargeboards look different. And the power ain't measly! It's 750bhp (pushing 800bhp) and the cars weigh 600kg. If they were 1000bhp engines next year, and with no traction control, the car would simply not go anywhere.

lol, 750lb ft... you wish. the engines create, seriously, around 250lb ft...

Actually F1 cars do produce a fair amount of torque, but at high rpm of course. Definitely not 750ft-lbs of torque, but not as low as 250 either.

I buggered up. :smt022

I was thinking of 2005's 900bhp V10s, and then I got 200 from somewhere, took it away and ended up with 750lb ft, knowing that they have 700 horsepower. My bad! =;

I miss those days of the V-10 and V-12's in F1 racing. They have totally screwed up by the V-6 and V-8's!!!

Erm, V6's?

LOl i was wondering about that too! But it could be the truth in the future. Before F1 cars had V12s, then century by century it dropped to V10, then now, V8. So might as well probably drop to V6s in the future...:(

Maybe meant when they used some V6 turbos in the 80's but that didn't wreck F1 at all.

The V10s and V12s of late sounded awesome. While I never actually heard a V12 in real life, the V10s were silky smooth. and sounded awesome as they went off into the distance. The V8's are more rough, more angry, but still awesome. Besides, the cars aren't that much slower than before anyway.

i read it in one of my car magazines before; and anyway, 250lb-ft is quite a lot, really. that's like 330Nm (rough calculation)...

how much torque do you seriously think a naturally-aspiratec 2.4-litre engine can produce?

I was thinking the same thing, that's why I put it there. That little dude is pretty awesome.

And have six cylinder engines ever been used in F1? There have been 4cyls, 8cyls, 10cyls, 12cyls, but six cylinders? Kinda unheard of.

Alot, but again, at high rpm. F1 engines have pretty much no bottom end.
