The GT500 isn't supposed to be a fine tuned sports car with precise handling, its a tire melting beast with a bad attitude. Horsepower is the Mustang's best friend.

Is that why the Mustang has won so many Trans Am competitions and just about every single other racing league in which it is allowed to compete in?

No, the Mustang is about doing whatever the hell you want to do in a car that can possibly be done.

The Mustang won all those Trans Am championships because it was racing against a bunch of other pony cars with similar handeling characteristics . I never said they can't make their way around a track, they certainly can. But while other cars rely on scalpel like handling to get the job done, Mustangs go the route of big power and generally less accurate chassis dynamics.

Case in point: two weekends ago I was at a historic race event in Sebring, FL. There were a bunch of trans am cars there mixed in with a bunch of old 911's, 914's, MG's ect... In turn one (a wide high speed 90 degree left) you could just see how hooked up these old Porsche's were. They cornered completely flat, cut a clean line and got the power down very smoothly. The Mustangs, Camaros ect. went through and they were leaning much more, hanging the rear end out a bit, getting on the power later. They lost time in the turns, but they would make it up on the straights.

Guess I kinda went off on a tangent there, but hopefully I made my point.

I find a lot to like in this particular 'Stang, however, those wheels need to go.

The stock pizza rounds are infinitely more aesthetically pleasing:
