And if you're not racing, it's all a giant waste of money.

100% agreed... yet people still buy them...

Last time I was at the bike shop close to the house, and in walks in this couple... dude was getting a bike for the wife...

what bike? a freaking Pinarello Prince.... some $7k...

shoes? a pair of god damn S-Works $350... and the ***** had never ridden before... the entire time she was whinning about how the shoes did not really match the color scheme of the bike.

and there I was just trying to buy some inner tubes for my shitty mavick CX7 rims.

I tell you.. when I go riding... and get involved with a group... the cheapest set of rims in the group costs more than my entire bike+computer+ helmet+shoes+cloths+rims+tires

but as the saying goes. it is not the Bow or the Arrow, but the Indian.

dude you upgrade, because shifters get better the more expensive, last longer, and are smoother....

same as rims, and frame...

and if you are dropping 3k on a bike, at least get good components...

good components make the bike, not the frame.

I would generally agree with you. Although the frame is important, if the components don't last as long as the frame, it's pointless.

So don't buy bottom-of-the-barrel bikes. But don't aim for the top-of-the-line **** that's overkill and unnecessary. (I know that sounds weird from me, but read on)

For example, don't buy a dual-suspension freeride mountain bike if all you'll be doing are short trips through the unpaved bike path in your local park.

Yeah.. agreed but not what i was talking about.

in the world of carbon fiber road bikes.. the same model bike comes in 3-4 different carbon fiber modulus.. these affect weight and rigidity, and also create a difference of a 1k frame to a 6k frame.

what I mean to say is.. get the model you want, which is not a bottom of the line, but dont go crazy on the high carbon modulus stuff, and instead get better components.

you will not be able to tell the difference.

Absolutely dude...Not many places in the world have as many ecosystems as we do.....Not only are we host to one of the Natural Wonders, you can go from lifeless scorpion/sidewinder/rattlesnake Sand dunes circa "sahara" movies to lush evergreens in few hours of driving.
Sedona, Pinetop, Snowbowl, Montezuma's, Grand Canyon, Slide Rock, Havasu, Tucson, Bisbee, Bumblebee, Tombstone, etc etc...

Literally everything short of a Rain Forest and Ice Tundra is here dude.
