Not a motorcycle. So far from it it's not even funny.
It's oil cooled, 2 stroke, carbureted, chain driven single speed clutch actuated, way-the-****-ahead-of-it's-time weirdness. It's almost like a one speed automatic transmission without the torque converter. It *is* chain driven, but the chain is connected to a final drive and a clutch instead of a big sprocket...so yeah, it's half way between a CVT and an automatic. I've got a shop manual for it, and I've never seen anything like the transmission. That's probably because I've never had a gasoline powered two wheel anything and never cared much about them until now, but either way, it's neat as hell if you ask me. It's got a chain that works as a starting mechanism and also doubles as the final drive belt. You kick the kick start one time which loads a spring, and then you flip a start switch to turn it on, like a modern motorcycle. That way you don't have to kick it a bunch of times like on a dirtbike or something. It uses the kinetic energy from the spring, and when you flick the start switch it hydraulically unloads the spring and cranks the chain drive to start the engine. See, the spring is connected to the rear brakes, so you push the brake down and it pops the little spring out. It's very clever. The clutch engages when you twist the throttle and stays disengaged otherwise. It's novel, especially impressive for a cheap scooter from the late 70's. I feel like I need to see more designs and see how other companies do it, and also how it all works on a real motorcycle, but the whole setup is really neato if you ask me. I'm planning on taking the drivetrain all apart this weekend, and then the engine comes out after that.

Got part of my display readout done. *The ambient temp works, 1 sensor down and 2 to go. *Once I get all 3 done I'll pop it down on a shielded board and make it happen.
![]() Best part is with a press of a button I can change the LCD color varying on how I'm feeling about glare, brightness, etc etc and I can modify the backlight too with a simple pot. (These are earlier pics before any of them worked) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

In the last while my car has eaten a lot of money, and I now stand facing a $2200 bill to get the thing painted and cleaned up so it might actually be worth more than four hundred bucks some day. While I'm happy to have it nearly mechanically perfect, and I'm excited that it will soon look the part, but it got me thinking.
I have a general question for all of you that frequently post in this thread. I pose this here instead of, say, the Lounge, because you all have acutal, legitimate experience with this. Your car(s)/gay little scooters/bikes/whatever cost you a lot. Whether it be time and/or money, their ownership comes at a significant cost. And for what? How do you justify it to yourself? Just curious. I like your bike, Brother 'TEC. That drive system is fascinating.

Dude, I'm not going to spend hardly anything on that shitty little scooter as far as money.
It cost me nothing--a friend wanted it out of their garage. I'll be surprised and disappointed if I end up spending 500 bucks total on it at the end of the day. It's going to be mostly sweat equity. I bought the Miata because I wanted something that wouldn't cost me a lot of money. There was initial investment for a clutch and a flywheel, and since then it's been, what, an ICV that I took out and cleaned up and now works great, and some fluid changes. I own Hondas because they're absurdly cheap to own. Sure enough, the most expensive things have been brakes (lol) because Honda uses crap brake pads and cheap rotors. Basically, I make it so I don't have to justify being the type of enthusiast I am because it's cheap. I've just tried my damnedest at getting transportation that I can use and enjoy a lot, and won't be expensive over the long run. I admit, I also "justify" spending a lot more money on musical equipment and my house and all the other sh*t I have to pay for rather than cars, so I try to keep them out of my priority box, which makes me a pretty shitty car enthusiast. Also...ehh, I do fairly well financially and it's not as much of a sacrifice as it could be. Crazy sumbitches like Evo and Corse...man, I don't know WTF is wrong with them. Probably them mental problems from all that inbreeding in Oregon.

If you're interested, when it's done, I'll teach you. It's not horrible to do. Are you familiar with electronics?
