Default Porsche 911 Turbo S coming?

From Autoblog:

There was a 993 Turbo S. And a 996 Turbo S, too. But so far, we have not seen a Porsche 997 Turbo S. Reason? Dunno, though we imagine that a more powerful turbo would step on the toes (among other parts) of the hard rocking GT2. Especially as the fastest of all 911s "only" makes 40 more horsepower than the plain ol' Turbo. And besides, 520 horses is probably pushing pretty hard against the edge of the performance-to-reliability ratio that OEMs have to worry about (unlike, say, tuners).

Er, that used to be the case. But, with the pending release of the new 911 Turbo and its 500 hp newly enlarged 3.8-liter direct injected flat-six, 520 horses doesn't sound like a lot. Just doin' a bit' o' speculatin' here, but if Porsche was able to squeeze 520 ponies out of the old motor in the 3.6-liter, well then, they could certainly squeeze who knows how much out of a special edition of the new one without boiling the water-cooled turbines.

According to Team Speed, a new 997.5 Turbo S is coming, and coming soon. When? Spring 2010. And how much power? Pure speculation, but 540 to 550 hp sounds about right. And figure on standard ceramic brakes, RS-style center lock wheels, and some sort of unique bodywork (more strakes?) to differentiate it from mere mortal Turbos. But like all rumors, this could prove totally false. But if it's true, look for the Porsche Turbo S to going up against Nissan's similarly steroidal Godzilla GT-R Spec-V on that one road in Germany...

IMO I can't really see the need for one of these. The GT2 is basically a 'Turbo S' anyway.

It's a Turbo S without back seats.

Center locking wheels are lame.

We all know 5 lugs is better than 4 and four has to be better than 1.

540-550 horsepower is a bit much to be speculating.

No S model jumps 60-70 horsepower.

That's simply too big, I think, between a standard model and a S model.

Porsches are really coming into their own.

They're becoming something else. They're not that no frills and all thrills drive. They're becoming that luxury brand that is pushing the envelop of engines and technologies.

Maybe they're losing base, I don't know.

They've maintained the look of the 911 for 40+ years. It's great but I think I would rather have the middle of the range Cayman, though the thoughts of a Turbo are nice. It's hella $$, too.

Porsche is pretty much repeating itself too many times IMO. Given, i've never driven one, but i think they need more variety in their line-up...They do impressive things with the what they have now, but new is good.

Edit: NO NO NO...variety is bad...Never mind...i just rememberd the old Cayenne and Panamera.

It shall have a similar power to the current GT2. and the new GT2 will most likely be more powerfull since it will have the new 3.8 engine as well . I see it as a logical and typical porsche thing on there lineup.

I like the idea of a more powerful Turbo, which in turn would make the GT2 more powerful. I love the idea. And the looks of the 997.5 are amazing

What's amazing is how many folks on this forum abuse that term.

a⋅maz⋅ing [uh-mey-zing]
–adjective

causing great surprise or sudden wonder.

That's just not the term to describe the most predictably styled car in history. In. Hist. o. ry.

I thought there was a Porsche 911 Carrera S and a Porsche 911 Turbo. Those were two different cars.
The next model to be revealed by Porsche is the Porsche 997¾ 4S Turbo GT3 Targa.

there are too many variations of the 911. You don't see Ferrari offering a dozen power outputs of the F430, do you? Keep it simple Porsche, otherwise you're just competing with yourselves.

^^That's been porsche philosophy since it's beginnings. The amount of Porsche 356s is amazing, and the same thing happened with 911's.

In reality it's not that they offer so many cars. They just offer a 911, but you can choose if it's turboed, na, 4wd, rwd, targa, cabriolet, has race suspension...

No other car company can compete with this offer.

My opinion on the S. They've offered it since the 993 and I'd rather have it over the turbo but I didn't really see the need. About the wheels, the design is nice, but they desperately need some dish!

Being a Porsche I'm sure it'll be an amazing car.

Actually I'm pretty sure Ferrari is up to at least 7 variants on the F430.

Firstly, it's not that complex....no more than most standard auto makers. Try building and F150 and you'll see complex.

1. Coupe, Targa, Conv
2. AWD, or RWD
3. Base, S, Turbo
4. Specials i.e. GT2, GT3, GT3-RS

Secondly, thats a standard picture of the 997.5 Turbo with an S photoshopped onto it, those are optional wheels and standard locks.

Thirdly, anyone who's actually driven a 911 Turbo will tell you there's alot of power anyhow, and why would I pay more for an S when I can get a chip for 3-5K and have the same power.
