Default Ford Focus RS Hits 401hp

Link:http://www.worldcarfans.com/10912212...h-mcchips-help

Here you go.

Quote:
German tuner Mcchip has extended the power and torque band provided by the Ford Focus RS to the extreme. The standard front-wheel-drive RS already gives a good 224kW (305hp) and 440Nm of torque through its 6-speed manual gearbox.
Mcchip engineers have sought to increase this substantially via two stages of tuning. The first involves only the remapping of control software for a hike of 30kW to 254kW (345hp). Newton metres go up to 520Nm. No 0 - 100km/h figures were supplied but top speed is rated at 271km/h.
Power stage 2 sees the inclusion of an enhanced intercooler, special spark plugs, more engine electronics modifications, a sports exhaust system and a new inlet manifold. These actions take matters to 295kW (401hp) and maximum torque of 612Nm. Peak velocity grows slightly to 278km/h (173mph). Power stage 1 costs €799 while Power stage 2 will set you back €4,499.
By making all these changes Mcchip believes it has created not just a significant speed machine but also a useable everyday sports car.

Hurrah for torque steer

I'd rather get a WRX STi than pay for this whole kit

I don't think I could put my trust in a company that names itself after a Happy Meal item.

And can someone please explain how the hell 412HP and 612Nm is meant to be tamed by the same wheels that do the steering? The standard RS already has pretty strong torque steer, so surely this is just going to be worse?

Actually, the standard RS has virtually no torque steer because of the revo-knuckle design of the front suspension. This increase in power might hinder the effectiveness of the revo however.

96 horsepower for $6,500? Meh, not bad.

At what point does it become crazy for front-wheel-drive cars to have this much horsepower? 401? Holy cow!

But the question is, is 401 horsepower really effective on a FWD setup?

Well, they've got you sold. Supposedly it helps, though...

Well, despite all the hype that surrounds RevoKnuckle – a system that allows MacPherson strut suspension to behave with the purity of a multi-link set-up – we can conclusively report that this car does torque steer. It’s not chaotic like the Mk1 Focus RS could be, but the steering wheel will firm up noticeably under hard acceleration and the wheels scrabble for grip in the lower gears – the ESP system allowing the driver to dictate when power should be cut in most situations, rather than cutting in early and spoiling the fun.

A disappointment, perhaps, but then what did we expect with 301bhp going through the front wheels? It also adds that boisterous edge that we’ve come to expect from RS products.

So that has about the same power as this, more torque though:

On the front wheels.
That's not a sports car anymore, it's just a straight line car. It will understeer too much.

... because unlike a RWD car, pressing the pedal will send you into a tree.

So it might not have that much torque steer, which I highly doubt but, there has got to be no traction what so ever on this car. I could just imagin trying to get off a light and ever single time you would be peeling the wheels because you have 400 freaking hp to wheels that cannot be wider than I dare say 245. What a waste of a project, they shoud of made it rear wheel drive and added a V8 and call it a day.

Yeah it still torque steers pretty badly, and what they don't tell you is that Renault were doing the same thing on their megane years before, it's just that they didn't make out like it was a massive breakthrough and give it a swanky title.

This is precisely why this car will never be as much of a landmark as the likes of the escos, the only limit on that is the size of your wallet as far as modifications go but this will always be limited by a compromised drivetrain.

Well, shouldn't all FWD cars have at least some torque steer, compared to, say a RWD or AWD car?

Look at all the Honda Type-R cars, most of them have less than 150lb-ft of torque, yet they still manage to understeer just a little bit.

Why's that?

^Which is why 400hp driving the wheels that also steer the car is bad.
