Default AMG Unwraps new 563-hp V8 Biturbo

AMG Unwraps New 563-hp 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo : Auto News

Quote:
Mercedes performance division AMG has just announced its new biturbo V8 engine, making 536-hp and 590 ft-lbs of torque (563-hp and 664 ft-lbs of torque with the AMG Performance Package). Designed to replace the 6.2-liter AMG mill, the M157 engine will first appear in the 2011 S63, where it will also make a decent 22.4 mpg and carry the luxurious beast to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. Top speed for the new S63 will be rated at 186 mph when equipped with the AMG performance package. After, Mercedes will begin to use the engine in all of its AMG 63 models, including in the SLS, where it is expected to get even more power. In the S63, it will use Mercedes' AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission, which first debuted on the SL63.

Torque for the new engine is available at very low revs, with 494 ft-lbs on ta at just 1500 rpm, while 590 ft-lbs are delivered at 2400 rpm. As for the AMG Performance Package models, 645 ft-lbs comes on at 2000 rpm, while 664 ft-lbs starts at 2500 rpm.

Engine highlights include direct-injection with piezo electric injectors and the use of a start/stop system to conserve fuel while the car isn't in motion.

that is one fackin cramped engine bay, anyone wanna tell me what those two aluminum pipes are coming out on top of the block? I hope this new M157 retains the same signature growl that the 63 AMG models have today, its one helluva sound.

Those two pipes conect to the turbines. I know the black ones are intakes that connect to the box where the AMG marks are, then the aluminium pipes go out that box and conect to the turbine. I guess those two smallers one bellow are the cold side turbine pipes that conect to the intercooler wish is located top mount i believe cause of that small intercooler/radiator thing.

with that much they torque it needs a 5 or 6 speed with really long gears, like the old e55 s/c

A: cramped
B: i predict major heat soak issues upon modification
C: cramped
D: WTF is with the head design? Where's the intake plenum/exhaust manifolds?

I can't tell which is which as the black looks plastic, and is much to high to be exhaust manifolds..

but the top mount should be exhaust, it looks like it might run to some air-air intercooler on the top but who knows.

-edit-

n/m Each of those Silver things are air-air intercoolers..

that's alot of willy nilly plumbing

thanks for the exposed pic tex..

I DEFF see heat soak as an issue..

Holy crap, that is one cramped ass exhaust manifold/area

I guess the turbos (+ plumbing) take up a lot of space.

I don't know, I'm kinda in the air about this thing. I like the power and torque, but I like the supercharger, it gave it some character.

Also, I don't like how they're calling it the 63, since, lets be honest, it was only a 6.2 to start and now they went down to the 5.5. Come on, don't lie

This yet again is the companies trying to play 1 up with one another.. Its silly really..

We'll see how it works, but as far as it goes plumbing strictly I can't stand it.

I think its very sloppy, and I don't see it cooling much temps in the engine bay with little more than hood vents blowing across it.. So unless this is very low boost numbers, I don't think I'll be very impressed...

P.s. Why so cheap a material use? Plastic???

The silver things are air - water charge coolers. If you look in between the silver and black pipes on the near bank you can see where the variable valve mech is so the exhaust manifolds are tucked out of sight on the other side of that with the turbos sitting down low, so none of that is in view.

I see all the turbo plumbing on the exhaust side, that doesn't change how cramped it is. Ontop of that air- water in a factory vehicle? Ugh that's a lot of maintaining for a 80 grand benz doncha think?

Eh dunno, never heard of one going wrong, ford has had them in focuses for years with no problems that I know of.

It's an extremely clean and compact setup for such a massively powerful engine.

Mercedes Benz FTW!

I've never heard of ford using a Air-water intercooler

Air to water intercoolers are good for drag/dyno use but air-air intercoolers are best for street application as they don't require repeated refills

The only production cars i've heard of using Water-air inter/aftercoolers are the Ford GT, the Ariel Atom and the Veyron

A water-air intercooler only reaps any kind of benefit maybe the first 30 minutes of use IF that..

after that the water has reached scalding temps and would take a long time to cool down..ontop of that, the evaporation factor would require refills quite regularly..

Now you combine a evaporator system with a set of turbochargers that hug the block this close

and you've got some hot operating temperatures, maybe not under STOCK conditions but once any above expected power is added that changes..

that pic tells me the air is sucked in through the center cooler piece, so it's sucking in ambient engine bay temps..

then pushing them down along the front of the engine by all of those hot accessories..

then down into the turbocharger which itself is hot due to it's placement so close to the block and crammed in with the exhaust manifolds then moved upwards infront of the block YET again..

then into what looks like the valley which COULD host another cooler but i can't tell...

Now whichever one of these is water is going to soak up alot of heat, very very fast just based on placement alone.

This is why Water-air intercoolers/air-air intercoolers are AWAY from the engine 99% of the time, to maximize cooling of the charge air.

and from the LOOKS of things, they know it, because they've wrapped 2 sets of the pipe with thermal wrapping/heat shields to try and prevent as much heat soak as they could..

so i don't see HOW a water-air intercooler would be affective on this car what so ever...and if it's an air-air intercooler..it's just bad location.

I think Mercedes knows more about engines than you.
