Saturn's version of the Pontiac Solstice, the Sky exhibits the new face of Saturn, which will add a mid-size sedan and a large crossover sport-utility to its lineup over the next two years. Aimed at the Mazda Miata in price with dimensions close to the pricier and slightly bigger Honda S2000, the sub-$25,000 Sky gets a 170-hp, 2.4-liter Ecotec four mated to manual or automatic five-speed transmissions and near 50/50 weight distribution. The Sky comes in early 2006, and we expect a Red Line version to follow. We're wondering what sister division Pontiac thinks of the supposed budget-brand Saturn becoming more performance-oriented

Im happy to see that GM is on the right track and is producing cars that are appealing and affordable to the younger and middle aged crowds. Ill admit that I do like the new saturns. Except i dont think its their version of the solstice, i believe its a version of the Vauxhaul. Either way It a sexy car. I also like the new Chevy Cobalt and the means alot coming from an import guy.

they're both nice. I hope they have some decent build quality though.

Maverick- actually the Solstice/Sky are built on GM's Kappa platform, I'm pretty sure that the Vauxhall/Opel VX 220/Speedsters are built on another platform. As i said im not sure, but I'll go check and edit my post

The SRT4 neon should give you an idea of the build quaity....which won't be that good.

hum. NO! those too are totally unrelated, SRT4 is a Neon, old Chrysler product, GM products are no better than that (coming from a Ford guy)

I've always thought of Saturn as the maker of econoboxes.. Sounds like a rebadged solstice anyway; so the Pontiac nameplate would be better IMO.

saturns opening up with the redline badge. and about the srt-4 being of poor quality?? the cars $21000US brand new. its built as a bare bones performance compact. its not supposed to have mercedes styling or ferrari handling. the engine is amazing for a 4 cylinder. MOPAR has an aftermarket kit for it that give it some 300WHP. theres no question about the quality of the SRT-4. it beats any other compact on the scene hands down. and thats coming form a GM guy...

I must differ.. 300 HP to the front wheels ain't that great. Plus, IMO, there are better handling, and overall better competitors. For the same price, you can get a WRX (new for 19k) and get some vishnu stuff:

http://www.vishnutuning.com/stage.htm

340 Horsepower plus for $4000; along with 4.2 second 0-60 times, and 1/4 mile in the mid to low 12's.

And no torquesteer and almost neutral handling at limit, FWD has inherent undesteer (altough stock WRX understeers more than an SVT Focus).

Quality is not the same as value, sure SRT-4 is great value from a performance standpoint, but it's not high quality.

It's good that you to recognize that quality is not the same as value (perceived bang for buck), FR500.

Saturn is GM's attempt to target Honda. With new technology (the styrofoam textured heads and intake manifolds look wierd), more automation, and lower labor costs they have attempted a major strike against the imports in the US market.

However, with huge incentives and near-zero finance rates, they hope to trade buyers into a new one before it falls apart.

If GM Delco Electronics had been a major NASA subcontractor, many more space shuttles wouldn't have made it to the beach, even with 5X redundancy.
