Eagle is a Chrysler brand which is made by mostly Mitsubishi Parts. My mom had a 1996 Eagle Summit. It had problems with the Timing belts and when she got a quote on replacing the belts, they said it would be a bit expensive because the car has japanesee parts ( mitsubishi ). I also remember it having the three diamond logo ( mitsubishi ) on the engine.

In case you aren't joking.. its Anti-Lock Brake System. ABS. Just like VTEC isn't VTLEC.

Since no one really answered the question, I'm going to try to right now.
"DSM" stood for "Diamond Star Motors." People use the term to refer primarily to the 1990-1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX AWD, the 1990-1994 Eagle Talon TSi AWD, the 1992-1994 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo AWD, and the 1991-1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR4, but truthfully the term can be applied to any vehicle manufactured at the Diamond Star Motors plant in Illinois, which was operated jointly by Chrysler and Mitsubishi from 1989 to 1999 and is now operated solely by Mitsubishi (it builds the Eclipse and possibly the Endeavor and Galant). The vehicles manufactured at this plant from 1989 to 1999 were: - 1990-1994 Eagle Talon - 1995-1998 Eagle Talon - 1990-1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse - 1995-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse - 1989-1994 Mitsubishi Galant - 1990-1994 Plymouth Laser As I mentioned, the term DSM specifically refers to the partnership the two manufacturers struck - "Diamond Star" referring to the Mitsubishi logo, three diamonds, and the Chrysler logo, which at the time was a five-pointed star. They built a plant in Illinois to produce these cars which many (including myself) believe the be the muscle cars of the 1990s. That should answer the question, but for more info... Many people erroneously believe that Diamond Star Motors was the beginning of the Chrysler-Mitsubishi partnership. Actually this is completely untrue. Chrysler and Mitsubishi began in 1971, when Chrysler decided it needed a compact car for changing market forces. They bought a fifteen percent stake in Chrysler, and produced the following vehicles: Japan name = US name Mitsubishi Lancer = 1971-1977 Dodge Colt Mitsubishi Galant Lambda = 1977-1983 Dodge Challenger, 1977-1983 Plymouth Sapporo Mitsubishi Lancer Celeste = 1976-1981 Plymouth Arrow Mitsubishi Mirage = 1978-1983 Dodge Colt, 1978-1982 Plymouth Champ Mitsubishi Mighty Max = 1979-1983 Dodge Ram 50 Mitsubishi Starion = 1983-1989 Mitsubishi Starion, 1984-1986 Dodge Conquest, 1984-1986 Plymouth Conquest, 1987-1989 Chrysler Conquest Mitsubishi Chariot = 1983-1986 Plymouth Colt Vista, 1987-1992 Dodge Colt Vista Mitsubishi Lancer van/wagon = 1987-1992 Dodge Colt wagon Mitsubishi Colt = 1987-1992 Mitsubishi Mirage, 1987-1991 Dodge Colt, 1989-1992 Eagle Summit Mitsubishi Lancer = 1993-1994 Dodge Colt, 1993-1996 Eagle Summit, 1993-1996 Mitsubishi Mirage Mitsubishi Chariot = 1993-1995 Mitsubishi Expo, 1993-1996 Eagle Summit wagon Mitsubishi GTO = 1991-1996 Dodge Stealth, 1991-1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT (none) = 1990-1994 Plymouth Laser, 1990-1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse, 1990-1994 Eagle Talon (none) = 1995-1998 Eagle Talon, 1995-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Mitsubishi Montero = 1987-1989 Dodge Raider, 1983-1990 Mitsubishi Montero 3-dr Hopefully that list helps a lot for future reference. Like all partnerships, Mitsubishi-Chrysler has produced some interesting stories. Some of my favorites: - the 1983-1989 Mitsubishi Starion (predecessor to the 91-99 3000GT). Nearly everyone's heard the story on this vehicle, which sort of overshadows the vehicle itself, which was pretty good. Legend has it that when naming the vehicle, one of Mitsubishi's first on the US market, Mitsubishi wanted to call it the Mitsubishi Stallion, but due to the Japanese accents, it ended up as "Starion," a rather odd name. Mitsubishi has been denying this story for more than two decades. Perhaps even more interesting is that the Starion's Chrysler twin, Conquest, was sold under the Plymouth, Chrysler, and Dodge brand names, each time badged as "Conquest," the only time in history a vehicle has ever been sold by three brands with the same name. - the Mitsubishi Mighty Max pickup was cancelled in the United States in 1996 by the federal government. At the time, the vehicle conformed to no new safety regulations (airbags in '95 and it didn't have 3-point belts, either, or optional ABS), and I don't believe it had On-Board Diagnostics, either, which was required by the government in 1996. Originally, the Mighty Max was rebadged by Dodge as the Ram 50, but by 1996 even Chrysler realised it was crap. - in 1988, Chrysler brand Eagle was manufacturing seven vehicles, five of which were made by Mitsubishi. - in the early years of Chrysler importing Mitsubishis, all Mitsubishi-built models said, under the model name, "IMPORTED FOR DODGE" or "IMPORTED FOR CHRYSLER." To this day, these badges are still around. It's interesting to see, say, a Plymouth Colt Vista with a Plymouth badge that says "IMPORTED FOR CHRYSLER" under it. - the Dodge Viper was likely the only good thing to come out of this partnership. Few people know this story, but in 1991, the Dodge Stealth was set to pace the Indianapolis 500. As race day came closer and closer, it was "discovered" that the Stealth had a Mitsubishi twin and had many Japanese-built components. Of course, this was blasphemy for the die-hard Americans at Indy, and Chrysler, who won the right to pace the race that year, had to scramble to find something else suitable. Suitable was a pre-production prototype of the Dodge Viper which barely had a working engine. Chrysler engineers made the vehicle race ready and sure enough, it replaced Stealth as the pace car that year. As many know, the Viper only exists because of initial demand, both at its first show in 1989 and because of the outpouring of support at the 1991 Indy 500. As far as I know, the 1991 running of the Viper is the only time a vehicle has ever paced Indy without being on sale at the time. Anyway, that's my Mitsubishi-Chrysler rant. |
