Default not thrilled with an RX8

I had to go up to my grandparents place in the mountains yesterday. On the way up I got to playing with two other cars that were having fun in the corners. One was a VW bug ragtop with turbo badges all over it, and the other was an RX8. I am not sure if I was impressed with the bug or disappointed with the mazda. There is one place where the road is very curvy, and you are going up a 7% grade for abut 3 miles, then there is a straight 1 mile strip that is a 9% grade with a passing lane. Going into this straight part the bug was right in front of me, and the Mazda was right behind me. I left them behind here, but watched my mirror. That RX8 could not power around the VW.

I have no idea what mods were done to either car, but I really thought the RX8 should have done better
Then by some strange coincidense, the same RX8 was behind me going back down the hill......I think he felt like he had something to prove, because he went around me at better than 100 mph (I was doing between 75 and 80), and left me like I was standing still

I did NOT expect the rotary to keep up with my worked over V8, because that is a steep hill, and requires a lot of torque to power up it. I had just thought that it should go around a VW

Quite the opposite....I like the RX8, and that was why I was disappointed.....I wanted to see better performance

Yeah... i <3 Rx-7's and the 8's just wont ever be as good to me. They needed to come out with a Turbo or mazdaspeed model to really catch my interest. They are still really fun to drive however.

What do you expect? The Wankel rotary engine is torqueless, lol.

But I'd be disappointed too if I was in your position.....

I'm a little surprised by this story but I've never been a big fan of the car or rotaries in general but I would have expected this guy to be able to muster enough power to get up and go around a VW. I guess it just really shows the difference in torque, even though that VW engine probably isn't too much of a monster itself.

Yeah, you might be dissapointed but RX-8 is a great car in my opinion. It has a good performance. What else do you ask from a Wankel motor? lol

I was driving my corvette.
I did not expect them to keep up with me, but was curious abut how the mazda handled hills, and the VW was nothing more than a point of comparison for me, because I had no interest in it at all
