Welcome to SCF, burwick.

Where are you? It's nice to know; and gives perspective to your question(s).

In the US, for any car that sold more than 50-100K total units; it's probably cheaper to install a (less miles) salvage engine than to do more repair than a head job.

I did 2 head jobs on GM "Quad 4s"; arguably the most stupid DOHC motor ever made. I got close to the 13.5 hr book time on the 1st one; but was thwarted by production changes the 2nd time. I always wanted a rematch. When I said so; experienced indy and GM techs said, "shoot yourself and leave less useless parts".

Thanks man, Im from the Philippines. i just need a little info on how to do Top overhauling for an engine. The price for a single Top Overhaul job in here cost about 500 dollars. with out the replacement parts of course. that's just for the labor. i have a 1990 Toyota corolla 2E Engine. my main problem is that the engine oil and the water in the radiator is mixing, my only guess is that the Cylinder head gasket is worn out. that's why i'm planning to do a top overhaul job but the Price is so damn expensive. my odometer is registering at about 200,000 Km. im turning to you guys coz i know you have lot's of experience in dealing with engines. I'm planning to swap the engine, i just happen to have a 4AGE Toyota engine, but i think i have to redo the transmission and stuffs which will require more money to spend and about whole of my time. that's why im planning to undergo a top overhaul job.

If the oil is mixing with the water in radiator you couldhave other problems. You could have a leak in the cylinders that's letting oil into the water jacketsand circulating it(so it gets the radiator), but then you'd probably have gas in there to. How do you know oil is in there and does it smell like gas? I'm not really sure how a bad head gasket would let oil into the ratiator. I'm pretty sure that the water pump has oil to lubricate it so you cold have a leak there.

As for why they're so expensive, it's just a PITA. It's just there so many parts up top in a engine then there are the gaskets and bearings for all the parts it take a lot skill to get it back together right.

burwick 182; are you getting oil in the radiator only, and not water in the oil?
