My cousin bought a 2003 Mazda Allegro/Protegé 1.3 5-speed manual, and the owner's manual says that it has to be fueled with premium gas.
Premium gas here in Colombia is very, very expensive, and its quality isn't the best. Premium gas overhere is almost the same thing as regular gas (quality speaking), so he wants to run the car on regular gas. The other thing to keep in mind is that the car is as underpowered as they come.(Something like 74 hp) The question is: Is the car going to have problems in the future if he fills the tank on regular gas? Are the power losses going to be a problem? Is it going to affect in a negative way the reliability/durability of the car? Anyone knows any additive to improve fuel performance, and keep the engine cleaner? Thanks in advance....

It will be fine. All cars (except the Evo IX) can be run on regular gas. And because that car only has a small amount of power, running it on premium wouldn't increase it much. And it wouldn't decrease it much either. And a car like that wouldn't be specifically designed to be used with premium fuel. Not all petrol stations have premium fuel for sale. What octane is the premium gas in Columbia anyway?

its not only the evo 9 that cant run on reg gas,
cars are made so they can run on some of the worst fuel availible. but to increase power you can change the ECU mapping and make it so they only run on SHELL optimax for example. alot of supercars only run on very good fuel. |

one possible problem with not using the right grade of fuel in your car is engine knocking, which is cylinders firing off-timing(verification?). knocking can seriously damage the motor so beware of that. but if the octane rating of fuel is only a couple points off, you should be fine i guess. my car says i have to 91 octane and i always use 91 octane, just in case.

Some guys I know put some sort octane additive in their fuel for motorbikes when premixing it (this is for 2 strokes) so that might be an option. Not sure how feasible it would be for a car tank though
EDIT; check this out http://www.lubeoilsales.com/products/fueladditives.htm Last edited by freakinsweet : Apr 25, 2007 at 3:13 PM. |

^^^they have octane boosters for cars too. i dunno how to get them or how much they cost though. depending on how much octane boosters cost, youd be better off with just buying the higher grade fuel.

Cars with high boost levels should be run on super or premium, cars with high compression ratios too, so it would probably be safer to run any sports car or tuned engine on premium Quote:

that car looks like it could run on 87 or 89. do you have the owners manual? that should tell you what grade fuel you should use. if not, check the inside of the gas tank door. fuel grade info should be there also.

I just read the owner's manual and it says that the recommended fuel to use is premium, so we need to look for a very good octane booster to run the car propperly.
Anyway's thanks for the info you people gave me. If anyone knows something that hasn't been said yet, feel free to post it here. Any new info is going to be useful i think. Thanks people.

you wont need an amazing octane booster. theres some out there that will turn 93 into 100+. just buy 87 and find a reasonably priced octane booster thatll get you to 91(which is premium in the US).
