Default Questions about Drifting

Im not bad mouthing drifting but I would like some one to explan it to me. I dont see the point of a motorsport where you drive sideways. Kind of seems a little strange when that is all that is do. So could someone please clue me in on drifting

I don't see the point of a motorsport where you slam on the gas for....6 seconds....

It's all a matter of opinion man.

There is ALOT of driver skill involved in maintaining a 600HP car sideways. ALOT more so than there is in maintaining a 600HP car in a straight line, you see what i'm getting at?

Drifting is for people who appreciate drivers skill aswell as car performance, but don't want to be so limited to cars of their own class. Because in drifting a 5000-12,000 dollar toyota can, and has come out on top over 45,000-80,000 dollar cars.

See how someone might enjoy that?

So its not always the fastest car but the best driver. Ok so even if you dont have a fast car you can still win.

It all about the underdog

Exactly, and drifting started with the Touge.. Touge was the "street racing" of japan, outside of the Wangan....

Touge = downhill, since japan's rural roads are moslty around mountains..they'd race up and down...Hence Initial D (minus the drifting)...
And since the fastest way around a course is a combination of drift and grip, considering slip angels and everything drifting was enevitably born.

and like street racing in america not everyone has 4358439085380 dollars to go spend on the best car, so they made do with what they had. So that's how you hear about these cars that normally arn't considered performance cars have now broken through..
Like the Civic...The AE86, the Toyota Soarer, the Chaser etc etc etc...

yup yup, drifting is very hard, to be able to control a car like that you need to know your car very well

-drifting also provides another line i think....

drifting is also way more exciting and fun, well for me it is..

It's just fun to watch.

It must be stated though, so that no one gets confused:

True drifting (i.e. swinging the car around sideways) is never, ever the fastest 'line'. By it's very nature you are not utilizing the full abiliity of the car to turn and maintain speed.

The 'drifting' that you may have seen some road racing cars perform is not true drifting, it is simply the car being driven just beyond the limit of it's grip.

Would those rally cars sliding their way through very very tight hairpins consider to be drifting?

because that seems to be the fastest way around a corner

No, they're not really drifting either. It the same principle as with the road race cars: they're driving a bit beyond the actual limiting grip of the car. It just looks a little more 'drifty' because it's well, loose gravel or dirt instead of pavement. You slide a bit further on it.

But the true e-brake-sliding-sideways-through-a-turn drifting (what you watch in the options videos or initial d) is never faster.

Prelude, actually it depends on the car, the course, etc etc. Drifting would get a car that has extremely low torque, with a high center of gravity around a corner series going uphill alot faster than if he broke corrected accelled

Hmm, well i've never been to a D1 or formula d but i heard/read somewhere that the judges take "crowd reaction" inot account. i hope thats not true b/c that just de-legitimizies drifitng for me....
dose anyone know if this is true?

I don't know if the judging is the same but these are some of the variables..

Showmanship (do you wave, showoff Etc)
Speed
Angle
Smoke
duration(can you go through 4 consecutive corners, or can you only do 3 ETC)
risk (are your wheels going off the course in order to hold the drift just that much longer)
Crowd appeal

there's other stuff that goes into it...
It's just like ANY other kind of judging...If you look the best you get the best score..
