Default GTO vs. GTO

This thread is meant to compare Pontiac's Grand Touring Option and Ferrari's Gran Turismo Omologato from way back when in the 60's. The idea of ths thread all started in the semi-conscious state associated with long car rides. I was reading one of musclecar books, and its had a section dedicated to the GTO as any musclecar book should. Now, I wasn't actually reading, but just looking at the pictures. One caught my eye, it was a pic of the Car and Driver from March 1964. It had a sketch of a Ferrari GTO leading a Pontiac GTO on a road course. The caption read something along the lines of "Pontiac GTO easily equal to Ferrari's GTO" and about the controversy it led to.

The book didn't have much info on the article itself, so I went looking for it. I found the info which most would expect, Ferrari's faster on a road course and the GTO won the on the drag strip. However, the GTO, with the optional sport suspension and with a little tuning from Royal Pontiac, the GTO could own the Ferrari on any road course in America. The GTO's price was somewhere in the $4,000 range, with the Ferrari costing around $18,000.
So, now my question. Do you guys think a the Pontiac, with the Royal treatment, could actually beat a Ferrari. IMO, I think it can. The Royal GTO's were on par with the best, pretty much the Shelby's of the GTO. So, feel free to discuss and possibly rip my head off for even thinking a Pontiac could beat a Ferrari

it might im 50/50 now. im thinking the weight of the pontiac would not help at all even with the suspension upgrades

The Royal was pretty highly tuned and the (Ferrari) GTO would have a better top whack

I know some Bobcats were very highly tuned, but in the magazine/book it says the Car and Driver car was only "slightly" tuned. Now that may be an understatement, but still a Royal Bobcat was an awesome track car.
