Probably first made by shepards who cooked strips of meat on shaved sticks over open fires as they tended their flocks, this skewared meat dish was until recently more commonly known in America by its Turkish name: shish kebab. With the current proliferation of interest in Greek foods, and the simultaneous rise of take-out food establishments like the Souvlaki Drive-in in Salt Lake City, the Greek name has begun to take precedence. Perhaps one day this delicious food will be as commonly eaten here as it is in Greece, where souvlaki stands appear on almost every street corner throughout the country.
Traditionally, souvlakia are served on 6-inch wooden or metal skewers, and without the additional pieces of green pepper, mushrooms, tomatoes, and onions -- all of which Americans seem to like to alternate with the meat on the skewers. If you prefer to add these items to your souvlakia, use 12-inch metal skewers rather than the short ones and double the size of the meat chunks. (Serves 6 to 8 )

Then I choose pork fried rice. :D
 Dark Hunter: That pic you posted is actually souvlakia kalamakia, and not souvlakia with pita (or pita gyros) bread I was referring to. Pita gyros contains the following:
-Gyros (small chunks of roasted pork meat (really delicious)
-French fries
-Tomato Slices
-Onion rings or slices
-Tzatziki (a spicy sauce made of yoghurt, garlic, cucumber and vinegar)
-All those wrapped around with a pita (thin circular bread-like thing)

Thlam have you tasted original souvlakia from Greece? Greek restaurants in USA and Canada should't be close enough to original greek recipes. Everyone come here in Greece, taste those things and you will not want to eat anything else for the rest of your life! :D

but i'll be going there more after all these mad cow scares in the US! :D

Like the German touch Dude :)
How ever you cant compare a Doner with a Gyros
When ever i head back to the UK and you fall out of a club at what ever time then the best thing you can get is a Doner.
And its the same in Germany but you dont get Doner's so you have to settel for Gyros pita.
I think the only diffreence is the meat but seeing as i am plasterd when ever i have one i will have to try them sober first
