Ack, Schumi and his crazy Enlgish.
Man, I wish I could skate! I haven't actually tried, but I'm passed the stage where I'd have been able to learn how to really well. Tony Hawk is inhuman! Incredible! Played the shizzle outta THPS2 for my Dreamcast. The soundtrack rocks!

Rodney Mullen will do things with a skateboard that aren't physically possible...Tony maybe the 'best' but NO.FREAKIN.WAY will he ever be able to do this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ-2-ENMAdI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FgdJLixbvw&mode=related&search=
This has some great old freestyle footage from when Rodney was really young...this one has some of the craziest tricks ever...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHw5apnmRLU the trick at 4min.55sec off the table is soooo sexy.
Tony is almost unmatched in vert skills but put him on the street & really , he isn't much compared to the likes of guys like Daewon Song & Eric Koston.
Then there's Danny Way & Bob Burnquist...don't even get me started.
Oh yeah , for the record , Tony Hawk 3 is still the most playable skateboarding game ever.

Rodney Mullen is a given, but Danny Way out huged Tony Hawk in that shot, with the help of what waas roughly a 150ft ramp I think ? Tony Hawk does 900's and 100ft gaps on 20 ft vert ramps. That is madness.

But what you are all forgetting is what guys like Tony Hawk,Steve Caballero, and Mike McGill did for staking. I am sure im older then most of you posting in this thread, but I can remember seeing Tony Hawk and them guys in the mid 1980s at a small skate/bike shop in Orlando Florida. Back then they where doing things that were never seen before.
Sure guys today can do things that the old school guys cant, but without those old school guys paving the way, building them back yard ramps, and getting out there showing what they could do, skaters today would be doing extreme pogo stick.

slipon , i'm 30. i skated for 11 years. i've met tony , steve cab , mike mcgill , ray barbee , lance mountain , tony magnusson , natas kaupas & skated with all of them.
trust me , these guys are why we have what we do now but back then , they weren't flipping boards inwards backwardly whilst skating switch down 15 stairs.
freestyle skaters bought alot more to the technical side of street than any other style. kickflips , impossibles , shove-its , heelflips...all products of freestyle. thanks to guys like mullen & per welinder.
pioneering mostly vert didn't do much for the street skaters. what's happening now? street tricks are constantly being applied to vert.
and besides , evolution is a good thing. i didn't think that i'd see a front foot impossible in 1993 & now , rodney mullen is doing front foot impossible-front heel flips...off school tables.
though i must admit , watching bob burnquist skate vert is a sight to behold. that man is amazing. old bucky lasek & powell footage is always fun to watch.
hmmm...i might go dig out my old bones brigade tapes...anyone here remember the search for animal chin?
just for the record...

yeah and danny way broke 2 world records on that ramp in one go.
i've never seen anyone go that high in any case. tony does 100ft gaps on 20ft ramps because he is transferring one side to another. the angle he gets on before he leaves the ramp is over 45deg.
danny way basically invented every modern aspect of skating that hawk didn't.
danny sets world records cause he jumps massive lengths & goes higher than anyone. go look for the chopper drop on youtube. he even jumped the great wall of china. 5 times...
Danny Way already held the world records for distance (24 meters / 79 feet) and unaided height (7.14 meters / 23.5 feet) while skateboarding, but that wasn't enough. Today, Danny Way set a new world record. Danny Way is the first person to leap the wall without a motor vehicle and land successfully. Not only that, today Danny Way pulled off the jump o the Great Wall of China five times in front of a crowd of Chinese dignitaries and officials, along with his family and friends and thousands of locals.
skating a 148ft ramp is a record alone in my book.

rodney mullens tricks are nutter tricks he like triple fingerflips while in primo and stuff.
tonyhawk takes a mullen trick then puts it on vert renames it and throws in a 180 for good measure.
also, im quite intrigued to know what the frontside GAY twist is?!

Hey Wesley. I am in no way doubting the ability of current skaters. They are way more technical then the old school guys ever where. I was merely pointing out that the old guys such as tony hawk paved the way for the guys skating today.
And it 20 years from now you young guys will be saying the same thing about current skaters when the young guys are skating on hover boards...hahahah

yeah true that lol. those guys really did pave the way. every generation brings something new to the scene and i guess it's quite easy to forget where it all started. for me and prolly you aswell , that was a while back eh? i take it you're around my age aswell?
man i couldn't skate hard now if i tried! it's not the age it's the mileage. if i slammed trying a trick it'd take weeks for me to recover lol.

Yeah im 32. I met all those guys several times at Orange Cycle Works In Orlando in the mid 80s. They use to do skate shows and set up a 10-12 foot half in the back of the place. 10 and 12 footers were HUGE back then...hahah. You see a ramp that size now and you are like thats it?
Yeah Im pretty sure I would bust my ass hard if I tried to skate now. I was messing with a neighbor kids board a while back and it was a very awkward feeling. :)

Rodney Mullen. The Godfather rules.
I like a lot of the tech guys, busting off some sort of street madness. One of the best things in the world for me was when I lived in Germany. Skateparks in every village, no joke. I think they take it more seriously than we do.
I decided it was something I was going to do. Skating that is.
I bought some cheap craptastic board just to get a feel for the local park. The board sucked.
I rode it for all of 20 minutes when another guy walked up to me (After busting off some lip tricks on a halfpipe some distance away from a funbox. He said, "Are you seriously riding that crap?". I said "Yeah it sucks but I was just seeing if this was something i wanted to try again.". He just laughed and said , "Here take this.". Handed me a Popwar board with Tensor trucks and Darkstar wheels.
Sweet.
Took me a month to just get my ollie down. Took me two months to get used to dropping in off the halfpipe and ramps that we had at that park. Tried grinding a rail (Boardslide)and ate it bad. Didn't try that again lol.
I miss it and recently went out and bought another board. An Element. I transfered the trucks and wheels off the old board and now I ride that. I hopped on about a month ago and tried to skate off. I had the feeling down fine but when I went to Ollie I ate it. Looks like i need more work.
LOL :D

I used to skate a lot back in high school. I had the ollie, kickflip, 50/50, and nosegrind pretty nailed down but then I got a car and I stopped skating. I can still ollie but that's about it.

Trust me, I am in know way trying to dismiss danny way, because the man is absolutely amazing, specially after he came back from what he went through.
I know what you mean about hawk jumping sideways, I suppose there is a hell of a lot less gravity to battle, I just didn't like that picture shown, it sorta looks like hes jumpin that off a vert. He deserved to win king of skate that day, everyone elses tricks paled in comparision, part from maybes burnquists.
I'll go look for that chopper drop now, because I can't say I've seen it before, thanks.
By the way, on a different note, how you doin, are you in hospital yet ?
