View Full Version : Something I have to say

When BluCam was getting frustrated it was just beginning of what I call the new sportscar forums.com. When he left we needed a new moderator and nothing against Jimkk but I knew you didn't want him to be a mod as much as the other mods didn't becuase if you did, you would have him a mod since he's been around forever. Somewhere along the line you gave in to everyone request that he be the new moderator because he had the most posts. Then you made Attaus a mod when he had less than 1000 posts and was rarely on the site. A few months or so before you made him a mod you me a mod should have atleast 1000 posts, and show interest in the position. I like Attaus but did these things long before him and am I a mod? No. Dark Hunter was also deserving and he didn't become a mod either, but we didn't compain. That was part of this transition. Then without Blucam we starting having problems with members that we never had before. Since then most of our quality members have left or rarely post. Think of all the names. And finally, this V-bull is great and all but it's no longer the user-friendly forum we used to have. The timing of it came perfectly with the change of the forum itself. If you think about it, you'll see what I mean.

I agree with most of what you said, and understand the whole moddin' situation.
But look, post count shouldn't count at all towards modding, nor should car knowledge. A moderator is the person who keeps the boards neat and tidy, makes sure the conversations are quality and not spam.
Now, you are definitely a good candidate for mod status in my book. But, honestly, I don't see you on that much lately, and yes I know you're busy with school and out of school stuff, extracuricular activities and jobs. Plus the lack of really passionate car articles on the site lately has been a factor to contend with.
Dark Hunter seems to be pretty mature and dude knows his cars plus he's on reasonably often. And god knows he's been here for a loooong time so he's got the knowledge on how a mod should act and deal with problems.
Finally, we can all talk about moderators doing their jobs / not doing their jobs. But all in all, we members are in charge of self regulation. Stop making stupid one line posts in well-thought out and well-worded topics. Also, when making a topic, bring in your own passion on cars to the forefront to give us respondants that "boost" to write longer posts and toss in our own thoughts on the topic at hand.
I'm not going to lie, this topic/ idea/ feeling has been hashed out a number of times and I feel like I've said this five or more times with zero effect, and for that I'm sorry.
Don't get me wrong, some things are alot better here, but some are still downright crappy.

I was saying post count shouldn't matter and that seemed to be the way rollin used to think but then almost every single new member started saying jim should be mod because he has the most posts and it seems like rollin just gave in. Also, I haven't been on much because I've been busy and even when I had free time, the site just isn't as much fun it used to be, nothing really catches my interest or it has been done too many times before. There was a time when I was really dedicated to the site and on quite a lot but lately I haven't been able to do that anymore. I'd like to think I made some good contributions to this site and when I saw sections dieing such as American cars I tried to make new and interesting topics, when I saw that topics themselves were lacking quality I came out with aspect topics, I gave this site tons of info on classic cars. But none of these are still active and nearly all of them have had less than 20 responses. It justs seems like everything I've done has gone unappreciated and the same can be said for many other members. I'm not asking to be a mod, I'm simply saying things have changed... and for the worse.

so are you saying we could make members like obx mods because he obviously knows cars, he is around a lot and he makes wordy posts. i think we have to earn their trust before we make them mods. i think the 1,000 post thing would make a good rule. or maybe 800.

First of all, I didn't gave in to anybody. When Blu left, we discussed the need for new mods among the current mods and we agreed that jim would be a fine choice. I believe that he has proven us right. Same goes for Attaus.
There is no real need for new mods. But making one a mod is also a form of appreciation. Therefore, Dimitris has been made a mod.

Do you even understand what is the job of the moderator?
His purpose is to keep an order in the forum, prevent threads from getting off track, edit offensive posts, move topics to the correct section. Whoever said that a mod should have vast car knowledge or a million posts? The only thing that is required is to be often online and have some common sense. He's also supposed to be sort of an example for newer members.
Which brings me to my point. Have I EVER done something wrong as a moderator? I challenge you to ask every member who's been here a few months if they're satisfied from the other mods and me. Don't I ALWAYS do the stuff that is required? Hell, I even speak (write) better English than even some american-english members around here... Also, do you question my knowledge on cars? Please............
Do you think you would be as effective in case you were the mod? You might, but if I'm not mistaken, you are online verrrry rarely...
To be even more honest, I think I'm the ONLY one who corrected the MESS that was here a few months before, when everyone would post in the wrong section and there were like sevenfold identical topics.
I must also say that Mopar68 did not help me with all this, and I can't remember more than a couple situations where he's used his moderating privileges. Attaus has done some things, thankfully, but he's not much online either... And mallon, well that's another story I won't be talking about. (btw, I think I'm also the only one who helped Rollin set up the vBull forum)
Anyway... do you want to be a mod? I hope you can stand the fact that suddenly they start bashing you, even if you do a good job.
Serious now, as Rollin said, there is NO need for new mods, and I think we all agree on this.
Therefore, Dimitris has been made a mod.Umm... that's me, right?

I don't see how that could hurt. It also couldn't hurt if she would have over 1k posts.

I really think we're all taking ourselves a bit too seriously, why can't we go back to the laid back scf that appriciated mods instead of tryng to bump them out

I just kinda skimed thru this thread, but i did read jim's post, and i must say, being a mod is a hard job, as so much is demanded of you (Is it even that the greatest member of this forum is still inept?).. but looking back to what happened before, I'd say we've gotten a whole further, and IMO, the forum shouldn't change any more :). Nothing's really perfect.. so we'll always have these "trolls".. and all we can do is just deal with them, or ignore them.

Matt, I guess I was wrong about you. I thought you were a quality member who would try to save this forum at all costs even if it showed the slightest signs of going down. Not the one laughing while it sunk to the bottom. You have the wrong ideas about being a mod, its not that glamorous, there is a lot of work that we have to do to make sure it stays running. Jim and Mopar are good mods. Unfortunately, I am at school for most of the day, or working, and cannot be on all the time. But I am on when I can. (which, btw, is almost every day) Jim is pretty good at getting things early in the day, when everything interesting happens.. Like you said yourself, being a mod isn't really about number of posts (after 1k) or car knowledge, but as a person who generally keeps their temper and moderates in a just manner. I think that the 3 of us qualify. Is there anyone that so out qualifies us that we should be kicked out and replaced? Is it really our fault that the quality of posts has gone down?

Damnit MattMerce, you should reconsider, the forums are going to lose one of the most knowledgable American muscle posters, and one of the more relaxed and mature posters, but you do whatever you wanna do. I can't stop you...
or can I??!!???

please think twice about it before you leave, it would be nice if you could stay, i dont know you too well, but you seem to be very helpful and knowledgeable, but theres nothing i can do to make you change your mind, so its up to you
[urgh, now i have think twice stuck in my head]

well after reading this thread i have to agree w/ most of what dark hunter and Mattmerce. I left at first b/c of all the trolls and stuff but i started to realize how i loved to come on during my first months here but when I left I figured maybe I could come back later and it would be like the SCF of old. I have been skimming through the threads to see its the same stuff when I left so I will not be back either. I will stop in once and awhile but thanks to SK37, ghalos, d_h, malin, mallon, mopar68, speedmuse, mattmerce, and blucamSS for helping me and teaching me some new stuff about cars latr

Sorry to dig up old topics(I should know better) but I want to clarify something: I left on my own account. MattMerce's(yes my cousin) leaving had little to nothing to do with it. In the summer and fall I had all the time in the world to post. Then, I found myself becoming less active with a very limited time to post. This was about the time swimming started(early december). Between school, then swim practice, not getting home until 8pm, swim meets, the state tournament, doing hw, and working on the weekends, I could have maybe gotten one post a day if I really tried. Would this post have been a lengthy intelligent one that I would be proud of, no. And so I let it slide, right or wrong I didn't post for about 3 months. Well guess what? Swim season is over. I have a week or two before lacrosse season starts and I intend to use it to mend whatever ties my leaving SCF for a bit has severed. Personally I don't think it's wrong to get caught up in activities and work and life in general but I was very quiet about my leaving and I thought the members of SCF were entitled to an explanation. Yea, maybe I let you guys down and could have stayed to help the new members but I didn't think I could do such a thing with my schedule. I'm not one to make a big stink about this but I'm back with renewed enthusiasm for SCF. Life without cars has been awful :). And that was not sarcasm. So, hopefully ppl now understand where I'm coming from and that this is enough of an apology for those of you were pissed of b/c of my "break", if u wanna call it that.

I never said anything about the whole mod situation and am not looking to cause an argument. Frankly, its not my business. I just wanted to explain myself and that's what I did. Unless somebody wants me to be a mod.... joking... I'm not nearly qualified. Could probably do a better job than Dimitris though (not you jim, the other annoying person who unfortunately shares your name).

In my opinion, I think we should forget about this whole thing. I respect you and Mattmerce, but don't think we should keep talking about it....just going to end up with more people leaving...
