What exactly are they for/do???

i'm really lost about this whole rep. points thing

The main point of the reputation sytem is to make sure that only good users are promoted to the Plus usergroup. Without it, users that spam (for example) would also be promoted.

ah, i see, so what is the 'plus' user group?

And, what does it take to get there?

Usergroups

SCF users are "stored" in two usergroups: Registered Users and Registered Users Plus. The difference between these two usergroups is that Plus users have more storage space for PMs and attachments and they can set their own user title (text, located below username). Registered Users are promoted to Plus when they have more than 1000 posts, are registered for more than 100 days and have enough reputation points (only administrators and moderators can give reputation points). You earn reputation points when you are polite, helpful, show good car knowledge, etc. You can also receive negative points if you start fights, insult other members, spam, etc.

Well, I would say it's more like an "improve in certain areas" type of reputation.

Yes, every user has 10 reputation points by default.

I didn't start with 10 rep. points.
