So, I got bored and found some olllld (about half a year) pictures of my nephew Patrick.

He doesn't have those flabby arms anymore, he's grown quite a bit but anyways, that's one of my sister and her husband's two dogs, Caesar, obviously, the carrot wasn't for him, but...The two have an understanding obviously (look at the pooches eyes). :)

I'll revive this thread.

As many Australians might know, the Gold Coast, my home town, was absolutely pounded with incredible amounts of rain in the past 24 hours. You might have seen the pictures on the telly of submerged cars and that sort. Thankfully my sh*tbox of a house was not flooded and saved from any major damage, although my pool overflowed.

It apparently rained about 350+mm of rain in the past 24 hrs. That's over a foot for those people who don't know the metric system.

Here's a few pics of the local uni flooded. Remember, all this damage was in the past 24 hrs. Pretty damn insane.

http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/4027/img2530small8wa.th.jpg (http://img167.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img2530small8wa.jpg)

It's been a shocker here on the Coast, hopefully it will get better in the coming days. It's incredible how much rain fell. I had to stay at home ALL day because it was too dangerous to go outside. That's how bad it was. To put this in perspective, the amount of rain that fell in 24hrs was as much rainfall we get in about the space of 5 months.

Insane.

The same skills you develop in debate will help you as an attorney, whether you are using your skills at trial or in a negotiation. Writing well is also very important.

If you want to get on the fast track, my advice would be to take something in the sciences as your major in college. This will help you get into law school (you will stand out among the zillions of political science and english major applicants) and a scientific background can be very helpful in legal jobs these days.

I went to law school thinking I'd never have to do any math as a lawyer. Turns out my very first case was a patent case which revolved around measuring kinematic viscosity of liquids. Had to dust off my college calculus text book. More and more of business law has a scientific angle to it. Get a science degree, followed by a law degree and you will be in very high demand.

Job security isn't any worse than other professions, and it's better than some (not as easy to outsource legal work to India as some other types of work.) Job security in any industry these days is pretty much a thing of the past. The job market is a lot more competitive than it's ever been, and with all the mergers, industry upheavals, and restructurings, there are very few "secure" jobs anymore in any field.

Last piece of advice. Where you go to law school counts for waaay more than, say, where you go to medical school. Graduates of top law schools have a very easy time finding great jobs. Graduates of less prestigous law schools may have a difficult time finding a decent job. If you don't have the college grades and LSAT scores to get into a top law school, you may be better off choosing another profession.

4 kids? Damn. I always thought that if you can raise more than 2 kids, you're a hero in my book. I'm one of three, so my parents had it easy compared to you. I have a friend who's dad is a lawyer, and he's rarely home. How do you balance your job and your children? I know that might be too personal, so feel free not to answer.

I started out working for a big law firm in New York City. Like your friend's dad, I was rarely home because the hours were so long and the work so intense. I didn't have time for my family, church, or anything else other than work. The money was really good, but it wasn't worth it for me. After a while, I realized that it wasn't going to get any better. So, after two years, I left the big firm and took a job with a very small company. There is lots of risk, and not as much money. Early on, we were barely making ends meet. However, the job gave me much more flexibility and a lot more time to spend with my family. I still have to work hard, but I don't have the same, constant grind of life at a big firm.

Even though I've done pretty well, I'm not making anywhere near as much money as the guys who stayed and made partner at the big firm. I don't care, however. I get to coach my son's football team, go to my kids' other activities, go out every week-end with my wife, take family vacations, and I'm usually home early in the evenings when everyone is still awake.

The trick is making family your first priority. Don't put them behind making lots of money. Put family first and you will be happy, no matter what. Put money first, neglect your family, and you won't be happy no matter how much money you make.

I'm not saying that your job shouldn't be a priority, because clearly it's important to do well in your job. I'm just saying that if your job shouldn't be your FIRST priority. Obviously, the better you are at doing your job, the more leeway and flexibility you are likely to get. I will go to work early instead of staying late. I will bring work home and work on it after the kids have gone to sleep rather than staying at the office and not coming home for dinner. When I travel, I do my very best to schedule my trips so as not to miss important stuff that's going on in my kids' lives. Sometimes, there are emergencies at work that absolutely have to be taken care of at the expense of family time. Nothing you can do about this. I've missed important kid events because of troubles at work. I just take care of the work emergency, and make up for it later with a little extra time with the kids.

When work and family conflict, don't automatically assume that work comes first. Just remember that your daughter's piano recital is every bit as important as going to dinner with a client. Do everything you can to reschedule the client meeting rather than miss the recital. It's really just that simple. If the job you are in requires so much of your time that you don't have anything left for your family, you really should consider a new job.

I've been lucky enough to have found a good job that both pays well and gives me time for my family. If I had to choose, however, I would give up my house, my car, and work at a much lower paying job before I would go back to a higher paying job that kept me from spending time with my family. My stuff is nice to have, but I was happy when I didn't have it, and I'd still be happy if I had to give it up. What I couldn't live without, however, is the time spent with my wife and kids.

Well spoken, hopefully my brother in law will turn out seeing things the way you do, he's a lawyer in Atlanta, with a 1 and a half year old boy. He was working at a firm before making 10% what the other two associates were making, so he left on good terms and created his own firm and with cases from the old firm being referred to him and two new "underlings" as he calls them, he's able to make a huge increase in pay. But he's out late as hell, I visited a while back and he was out at 7am and got back at almost midnight. Sorry, but if I'm going to do hours like that, it's going to be for either the community (hence the poli. sci. major) or for my family.

Well written man, well written, also, any Chinese art favorites? I took a couple of semesters studying Asian art.

You look exactly like my friend's brother's girlfriend.

And that was well written, ssssnake. Quite an interesting way to look at life. I think my friend's dad did the exact opposite. He has a job with a pretty big firm and makes a good deal of money. However, it's rare that he's home. So what does he do? He showers my friend with money and a relaxed attitude towards bad behavior (i.e. drinking, speeding, smoking). Quite an interesting person.

Thank god I never had to deal with that really. My dad works a regular 9-5 desk job. Takes the train in the morning, and comes home at around 6:30. It's been that way for like, all my life, so I have no problem with it. He's around plenty.

Really? She looks like my cat's sister's doctor's niece's girlfriend.
