There’s no doubt about it – few tears will be shed over the departing Fiat Stilo. Even company bosses admit the Ford Focus rival has been a sales disaster, which is why its replacement has arrived in record time.

The all-new Bravo resurrects the name of the previous-generation car. Taking only 18 months to go from boardroom to showroom, most of its development was done in the virtual world – and the result goes on sale in the metal this summer.

Unlike the original Bravo, only a five-door bodystyle will be available, yet Fiat claims it sets new standards for quality and driving dynamics. So can it really challenge the Focus, as well as the Vauxhall Astra and VW Golf, for class honours? Well, the new machine has certainly hung on to its Italian style – particularly in this top-of-the-range specification.

In standard trim, the Bravo resembles a scaled-up version of the company’s Grande Punto, and is awash with attractive details, including bold headlights, a chrome split grille and a chunky rear end. But with a bodykit, 17-inch alloys and lowered suspension, the Sport is the most striking of the bunch. Lesser models, which ride higher and get smaller wheels, aren’t as convincing.

The interior is stylish, with deep-set instrument dials – which will be familiar to Alfa Romeo owners – a piano-black centre console, plus a large infotainment screen and a carbon fibre-look covering on the facia. Under closer examination, however, there is lots of scratchy plastic below the eye line, and the materials don’t feel quite as sturdy as those in a Focus, Astra or Golf. What’s more, while the 400-litre boot is deep, rear room is cramped and the front seats are short on thigh support.

Mind you, there’s not much to be disappointed about under the bonnet. As well as Fiat’s smooth M-JET diesel units, new 1.4-litre turbo T-JET petrol engines join the range with outputs of 120bhp and 150bhp.

Our model was fitted with the latter, and it felt responsive and willing to rev. With 206Nm at 2,000rpm, it lacks the torque of its diesel counterparts and isn’t quite as flexible, but still offers a decent blend of performance, economy and refinement. Handling is tidy, safe and much more grown-up than that of the old Stilo. But the Dualdrive electric power-steering system takes away any driver involvement, and our Sport model suffered from an excessively firm, crashy ride.

There’s plenty of equipment, however. Even Active variants feature side airbags and climate control as standard, while the Dynamic adds alloys and the Sport gets Fiat’s hands-free mobile phone kit plus a slot for MP3 players. But with this flagship version set to cost as much as £17,000, you’ll have to pay a high price for all the kit.

So whats everyones opinion of the Bravo ?

I personally think it is the best looking hatchback on sale today even though the interior isn't upto German standards but hey its not a German car so why should it be ?, engines are pretty impressive aswell with upto 150bhp from a 1.4l Turbocharged engine.

Well I like it. I personally prefer the new Civic in looks and just about everything, but it's a huge step over the old Bravo.

See it in real life, and you won't like twice at the Focus. Its stunning. Plus the equivalent Ford is around €3k more expensive here in the Netherlands.

Fiat has some great cars now in the lineup.

Yeah they have I really think the Panda 100bhp is a mighty cool car aswell has the Grande Punto, Stilo was a cool looking but as I said it didn't have the sales impact that Fiat bosses would have hoped but still a cool car. Hell James May has a Panda so it must be good lol and the Sedici looks alright !

So overall Fiat are alot better than 10 years ago in terms of looks, quality, reliability and price over the competition.

Looks great, hopefully it would make a bigger impact on the market for them - they've been down lately. Looks great anyway, the interior is nice, although the continuous strand of grey everywhere makes it really boring - I'd rather prefer shiny black or red interior to increase their sales... But nice car anyway.

I like it. It looks way better than most hatches on the market right now but won't sell much here because of the reputation of the Fiat brand. It's going to be called Ritmo in Australia right? I heard sumwher that Ritmo is a female sanitary product...:-k

Hmm, according to those pics i think the Bravo will be a pretty good car. On the exterior it looks good, the front looks nice and those rims suit the car, same goes for the red paint job. As for the interior it isn't too bad. Hopefully this will be the correct way to go for Fiat, i'm sure i will be more successful than the Stilo...

I think that it's a good car. I think that it is in the same category with the new mondeo. I like it. From the exterior the car is good.
The interior has enough space for 5 people.
We will see it with the turbocharged engines of Fiat. First will be the engine with the 120hp. I hope so.

although the bravo looks just like any other new fiat, i still love it. it looks really sexy from outside and modern looking from the inside. i really want to see the abarth version soon. it'll give focus rs a tough competition i'll bet.

Looks decent, a fresh car design out there, I think. Good engines aswell. The only downside is the interior, which looks outdtaed, flimsy and not up to it's rivals. That's a real disappointment because everything was really promising up until that point.

Still, I still do like this car, ever since I've first set my eyes on it, I hoped it would be a success.
