Robert Doornbos has had stints in F1 with Red Bull Racing, and was their 2nd driver after Klien jumped out and the position was vacant until Webber took it at the start of this year. (EDIT: Doornbos is still RBR's test and 3rd driver for this season as well)

This situation is really quite interesting! You see, Bourdais has been tipped many times to jump into an STR car for 2008, and yet he is now being challenged in Champ Car by the same guy who used to be in F1 with the same (sort of) company.

I wonder what Mr. Berger is thinking right now :D

jortie, it's actually Robert instead of Robbert (spellingsfoutje!).

I don't know a lot about motorsport, not even about Formula 1, but I found a press release at www.robertdoornbos.com:
Robert grabs maiden Champ Car win!

MONT TREMBLANT, JULI 01 2007 – A new star arrived emphatically on the Champ Car scene today, as The Netherlands' Robert Doornbos took his first Series victory at the Grand Prix of Mont-Tremblant, and notched his fifth podium finish in six starts. This marks the shortest amount of time it has taken a rookie to win a Champ Car race since 1992, and makes him the first rookie to win a Champ Car event since 2002.

It was not an easy victory for Doornbos, though, who had to deal with treacherously changeable conditions throughout the race. He moved to the head of the field for the final time on lap 53, after leader, Simon Pagenaud, had a brief off-course excursion, and was never headed, despite considerable pressure over the closing laps from reigning champion, Sebastien Bourdais. Once he crossed the finish line, the “Flying Dutchman” took the time to thank his crew for their part in the win, and even sang “Happy Birthday” to team co-owner, Keith Wiggins.

Doornbos now heads into next weekend’s Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto tied in points for the lead of the Champ Car World Series.

ROBERT DOORNBOS: "It was spectacular! What a great feeling to win! I am very happy for the team, and I feel that they deserve it, and I deserve it, and I couldn’t be happier. We have been fast all weekend and I knew we could win, but with the changing weather conditions it was very difficult. The circuit was changing so much, and everyone was fighting for positions, but we came out on top in the end and that’s all that matters. As for Sebastien’s comments about me, I’m not that concerned. Champ Car officials do not feel I did anything wrong, and I’m sure if they did, they would have penalized me, like they did in Cleveland. I respect the fact that the rules here are different and I stayed true to them. If Sebastien feels that he could have passed me, then he should have done it. Nothing can spoil this victory today, and I’m thrilled for all of my team, and especially glad to give this special birthday gift to my team owner Keith Wiggins. I think the rest of the Championship is going to be very tight, and this win today proves that we are a front-running team.”

Doornbos is doing great; just shows his talent and his skills in single seaters.

Yeah I agree Timbit. But there has been a lot of rumors that Bordais will jump into F1 since the 2005 season, still waiting on it to happen. As for Robert Doornbos, if he is tied leader of the Champ Car's that's good for him. I think it will be good for his career if he wins the championship.

Well, to be fair on Bourdais, he did test with STR in the winter testing period, and he;s rumoured to do another at the Spa tests later on in the year.

There has also been some signs that Berger is looking for at least 1 new driver next year, although that could just be media speculation/quote twisting.

Yeah I know, it must be hard for him because he doesn't want to leave a place he is dominating. As for the joining STR next year you never know, it could be just media speculation or it could be on the money.

First of all go back to school and learn to spell so I can understand what you are saying. I think it will be tight, but I think that Will Power will snatch it from both Bordais and Doornbos! Go Will Power!:D

Yeah sorry mate I was a bit harsh. Yeah it should go right down to the wire. I just hope that Bordais gets beaten because I hate him!

None of you historians (snicker!) mentioned that Aussie businessman Paul Stoddart owned Minardi F1 from '01-'05. He sold the F1 franchise to Red Bull WITHOUT the Minardi name, which begat STR.

Stoddart (VERY interesting interview on last Sunday's Wind Tunnel[exhaust leak?] w/Dave Despain on SPEED) went to Champ Car as Minardi USA. Doornbos gave him his first win. Giancarlo Minardi called within hours with congrats.

Nothing would please me more than seeing a Dutchman driving for an underfunded team kick butt on a 3-straight Champ Car champion Frenchman driving for the overfunded (McDonald's fergodssake!) Newman-Haas team!
