Actually, the truth is very different.

The number is 5 billion years. Then the sun will start becoming bigger and bigger, reaching all the way up to the surface of the earth. Everything will die and the oceans will start boiling (literally). Then the earth will be pulled by gravity towards the centre of the sun, where it will be burned and finally turned into gases. Then, slowly, the sun will become a white dwarf, much smaller than it is today. It will keep emitting radiation and small amounts of heat until, tens of billions of years later, it will be totally cold and lifeless, thus becoming a small black dwarf.

(I read all this in a reliable space scientific book)
