firstly, as Koenigseggs said, readable would be a preference
I believe the reason is that Cayman S would sell in more numbers, and they would prefer to have them on the roads then a standard one, and knowing people would pay MORE money for the S if there was no base model for sale, so they forced people with money to pay the extra to get the better more expensive model. Then once they were satisfied enough was sold to those who could afford it because they wanted the car, and not bothered about whether it was S or not, they introduced the standard car at a lower price for those who wanted the car but couldnt afford the S model, so this way they make even more money, forcing those who can afford it to buy the more expensive model, and then opening the door for the rest of the market to buy cheaper ones.
thats my take on it anyway

That sounds great, and to add to that I believe it was to make more of a "splash" in the auto world. Porsche wouldn't want people to see a "slow" version of a brand new car either. It might scare off potential S buyers.

hmm, that sounds quite true Subarukid...made sense to me...
and yea, a readable post would be cool as eating a pie naked...
well im with Subarukid, they sell more with the Cayman S, then they sell to those "poor" guys and get the normal one, and also, they are similar cars, they act differently because of the specs and those stuff, and i think that they made the S come first is because so they make it like very good and give good reviews to the public, something like that, and then introduce the normal one, because they act similar and do similar stuff, beh...that point im making is that they brang out the S first is to give others a good feeling of the S so that they could buy the out-standing S and the similar graded normal one...
sorry if that dosent make sense...my long post never made good sense

hmmm... personally if i was going to buy a porsche i wouldn;t even touch a Cayman with a 12mile pole...
if you cant afford a 911 then you should reconsider buying a porsche IMO... cayman is just a boxster coupe... hence the name Coxster given by JC...
i detest the cayman... it was made to fill a gap, not as a testament to the engineering capabilities of porsche...

WHAT :0
the cayman is considered one of the all time great porsches. It has been praised for handling. Its such a good car, and so what if its there to fill a market gap, it does it well.

Really? You go have a good time with your buddy clarkson if you believe everything he says. First, have you ever driven a Boxster? That car would make you wet your pants. I don't care what clarkson's stupid ass says about it or what the published figures are for, that car is wicked. It's not the fastest or the quickest but it's one of the funnest Porsches made.

I'd have a bit more respect for your opinion if you weren't just regurgitating what you heard on a television show. Clarkson likes pushing people's buttons for reactions and there's no more reliable button to push than to tell non-911 owners that they obviously couldn't afford the 911. That saw has been around since the 912.

Funny, because Clarkson said it was a damn good car.

This makes really sense to me.I think that that's the thing, but maybe porsche hasn't developed the smaller engine?(2.7l)?This is a robbery of your money by porsche if these are right. Why to force us to the bigger model? To take us money?I don't know how they thought the situation..But remains in the top.

That didn't make much sense but how are they 'forcing' anything? If you don't like it don't buy it.

the Cayman came about as a result of customer demand, moreso than a gap filler. The mid engine Boxster layout is superior to the 911's RR layout, however you can't really race a roadster. When the 911 engines are put into the Boxsters / Caymans, then smoke 911. The performance edge the 997 holds over the Cayman S is the result of driver aids (traction and stability control) and engine allocation. Even with the power difference, the Boxster & Cayman are more fun to drive than the 911 ( unless you are a power junkie, which is not a bad thing by any means)

the cayman s is way over prices in my books. According to rsportscars its like $56,000 U.S. thats pretty close to Z06 territory.

I will explain you what i mean but it will be strange to your ears. Some people want to buy porsche continuosly. So they buy a porsche they selling it to buy the next model and they do always the same..These people are forced by porsche to buy the current model which is the cayman with the big engine..because the company haven't made the smallr engine..So the haven't other choices and they buy the more expensive..I think so..

I can understand your thinking but... it's wrong. In this country anyway. I've tried to explain over and over again. Porsche drivers (anyone here who's ever owned a Porsche will understand) are a different breed of driver. Not better, not anymore special, just different. They don't usually buy their car because it's the newest or fastest. That's why you'll see multi-millionaires driving 10 or 20 year old 911's... They buy their cars because of their love for it. If they don't want the current model they find one that fits their needs. I'll use myself as an example... I could go buy any model in their line-up (with the exception of the CGT, without a loan anyway) but I won't because they're not what I'm looking for. I want a late 60's 912 and a late 80's 911 Turbo (put the Turbo engine in the 912) and until I find what I want I won't settle for anything else. That's what happens after you get bitten by a Porsche. A large majority of the brand new Porsche buyers are first time owners.
That's just here in the US... I don't know about anywhere else.

I wish your words to be true in your country..Because in my country they buy porsche like toys..Because they are rich they are thinking that if buy a porsche they will be in fashion..And they not buy it for its passion and the excitements that porsche's can give..Only to show to their friends their new car..I hope to understand me..But we have got many that are regular buyers..
