Swedish safety king takes a step away from sporty.

The Volvo alphabet will no longer include the letter R, as the Swedish automaker has decided to shelve its sporty R-badged cars (all two of them) once production of 2007 models ceases, which should happen by July. The S60R sedan and the V70R wagon were hot-rod versions of more run-of-the-mill stuff—a concept we fully support—intended to help convince consumers that Volvo is more than just airbags, ultracomfy seats, and swoopy center consoles. But cars that don’t sell can’t convince people of anything, and, in the end, the cars ultimately failed to reach even the modest sales targets set by Volvo—just 3800 units annually, the company says—with only 2150 sold combined last year.

So why didn’t they sell? The problem in a nutshell: folks who buy Volvos aren’t generally speed freaks, and speed freaks, conversely, don’t generally find themselves wandering into a Volvo showroom. It takes a special person to want a fast Volvo—we’re talking the kinds of people who loved Crystal Pepsi—and there just aren’t enough of them around.

As enthusiasts, we can’t say we’re terribly sorry to see either of the cars go. Sure, the run-down sounded good—300 horsepower, all-wheel drive, adjustable shocks, a six-speed manual—but the cars were dull as dirt to drive in comparison to most sport sedans, and they just couldn’t compete with the more soulful and spine-tingling rides from companies with more established performance reputations, such as BMW and Infiniti. So long, R cars, we hardly knew ye—if airbags and safety sensors could make up for driving excitement, you might still be around.

Well hell, we all saw this coming. The automotive world is going to sh*t. It's only a matter of time before BMW drop M GmbH, Mercedes drop AMG etc.

Well maybe not, but the Volvo R series didn't sell very well anyway. They couldn't compete with the gangsters from previoulsy mentioned groups.

Thats a shame, I was looking forward to a hot S40R or something like that. I'll quite miss those R Volvo's, they would make great undercover Police cars. Lol

You guys...I swear...

Think about this for one minute. Just this once.

The enthusiast market is so miniscule you wouldn't even believe it. Volvo probably loses a couple thousand dollars on every one of those R cars it makes, and since the PAG (Ford's Premier Auto Group) is losing money like middle aged guys lose hair, then it only makes sense to lose the not-profitable cars.

I mean, yeah, this is crappy for us enthusiasts, but sales on that car are glacial, and the $$$ numbers speak to the people upstairs louder than the folks (like myself, indeed) who might want a sweet-ass 300 horsepower AWD Volvo Wagon.

Besides that, I'd like any of you knuckleheads to say you'd take this over an M3, which this car was designed to take on. I mean, I would, but that's because I have a vendetta against BMW as of late, and I love Volvo's. Still, I couldn't afford one, and given the money, I'd go out and get a used NSX or an Accord V6 6MT and save the rest for a mortgage payment.

that was so sad that i actually had some sort of tears coming out of my corner of my eye, not kidding...

Volvos had made great cars along the years, especially the R series, i mean just look at the passage.."300 horsepower, all-wheel drive, adjustable shocks, a six-speed manual" darn, that sounded great, and it all ends, in a sudden...the bodykits for their volvo were perfect, but hell, 300hp dosent sound much nowadays...thats mainly why they lost the people's interest...

but well, so long Volvo Rs...no more performance and nice cars from Volvos, or else if they improved their sales in the C30 and make more cars like the C30 and then re introduce the R series again, but that wont probably happen...so long then "R"

Heh, that makes so much sesne. Why keep a car going that is losing money. They are good cars, no doubt, but they don't fit 'Volvo', at least they tried, I guess.

I really woulduv wanted to see the C30 R but you can get a sport package can't u with 18" and lowered ride? I think Volvo's decision was a good one because there's no way that Volvo could compare with AMG and M etc.

Yeah, i was really looking forward to something like the C30R. It guess thats almost impossible now. But i think it the correct way for Volvo to go. If they lose money making a car then why even sell them? Anyways Farewell "R".

Damn, the R badge on the Volvo looked sweet. That's a bad decision on not producing any models with the R.

hmm, pretty average. i've been influenced by others to say that this car is bad. yeah, now thats what i think. The front is good, but the rear ruins it. For some reason, we are getting really crappy models being released lately...

Aaawwww....now that sucks. Volvos are pretty cool cars and having an R-variant made it even cooler....

I know it makes sense to drop the R models, but t's still disappointing. Hot versions of mild cars were always cool, I reckoned. The V70Rs power, drivetrain and overall coolness was hard to beat, but now it's not gonna happen again. Unlucky.
