I read in a car mag that the 998 (the next 911) will be front engined and real wheel drive. Any thoughts?

This is pure crap. The 911 is an icon as a real wheel drive car and they will not change it. Please stop posting bullshit.

oh finally you are getting your good magazines! but nah, i dont believe that you are
okay, the 998, sounds abit weird...but heck, WTF you smoking or reading, the 911 IS supposed to be rear engined and rear wheel drive(four wheel drive for the 4 and 4S), but beh, we should wait, it takes years until another 911 will be released...
Rear wheel drive for the 911 is an icon to porsche

Actually i was going to post somthing like this.
The 998 is actually getting rid of the flat-6. That same flat-6 used for pretty much every 911 ever made. Porsche say they've pushed 6 cylinders as far as they can go. So they are going to make a flat 8. Still rear engine.
If porsche didn't change the layout years ago, why change it now. Its works perfect. Its what makes a 911 a 911. That would be like talking away its heart and soul.

^I was thinking the same thing, like, how can you get even more power and torque out of a six cylinder engine? Sounds impossible. I have heard rumous that the 998 will be FR with a V8, but people have dismissed that idea. A flat 88 with RR should be very very interesting too see. You never know, we could have even more discussions to have, seeing as nothing has been confirmed about the 998 yet.

In that way it'd not be a 911. Porsche supporters'd buy anyone.

I doubt they'd eve make the 911 FR, it's just not right. I wouldn't even want them to make the engine bigger, I love the flat-6!!!

unless i am mistaken there was a lot of contraversy when porsche introduced the 911 as RR and people said it was unsafe, they prooved people wrong and i dont think they will change now,

I don't see them doing that, a 911 is a RR layout or it isn't a 911

You're very right. For many years people swore the 911 was not only unsafe but that it would never be a successful race car platform. I'd say Porsche proved them wrong. Not only did they prove them wrong and develop a damn near perfect street/race platform but they built a VERY profitable company along the way... all BECAUSE of that unsafe car...

i think you read about the new 928, which will come out somewhere around 2010.it will have a front engine and rear drive.i heard it will be built on the porsche panamera platform...that's what i know...i hope i'm right and the 911 won't have a front engine....

What car magazine did you read? Its sounds like the new Panamera, the new front engineed and rear wheel drive saloon-coupe ala CLS car. I very much doubt that Porsche would ever make a 911 in any other style than a RR layout. Plus, I like the sound of a Flat-8 engine, but how much more power can a RR layout take without making it 'unsafe' again? Also, do you think that Porsche would make the Carrera and Carrera-S models as Flat-6's and the higher spec GT3 and GT2 from Flat-8's? How much more weight will this add to the 911? So many questions, so few answers...
monkeyfkker
Apr 11, 2007, 5:10 PM
Too much weight considering that the same amount of power can be gained from the 6 as an 8.
Look at what Ruf does to 911's... They have such advanced suspension systems that no matter how much power Porsche gives them stock they'll handle it fine...

Didn't say it was too much weight, just wondered how much its likely to add to the 911's kerbweight, thats all. :)
I forgot about RUF and 9ff tuners, don't they re-develop the standard Porsche suspension though? I suppose Porsche's PASM suspension is very good though and tyre technology is improving everyday, so its gonna be ok really.

Hmm, it's hard to tell if it's true or not. If it is then they're breaking the old 911 tradition - Rear engined, rear wheel drive because the 911s are famous for their layout. Anyways lets just wait and see...

There's only been two times that porsche has changed the 911. When they were criticised for the 911's handling traits, they turbocherged the bugger. And when that became too dangerous, they fitted AWD.
If it is true that they will change to a flat 8, it can be assumed that this wil only be applicable to the top-spec models, unless they've already got 4 or 5 variants already. They'll need to (eventually) replace the Carrera, Carrera S, Turbo, GT3, and GT2 engines, and I can't see porsche doing all that at once. My best guess it that the base Carrera will get the engine from the 997 S, and the 998 S and GT3 will get the F8, while the Turbo (and Turbo S), and the GT2 will run further evolved VGT sixes.

Nahhh, I'm calling bullshit on this one. Porsche will eventually perfect the 911 to the point where it can't get any better, and then stop it. That's my guess. It will never go FR.

There's no damn way Porsche would do something as stupid as changing the 911 into an FR. That's like Subaru removing AWD from their whole lineup.....

911 will never go front engine [/B][/U]Porsche press releases said that for the 911 they would never deviate from the flat-6 rear engine rear drive platform although apparently there are some Porsche engineers who would like a mid-engined platform for future 911s

Wiki is kind of a reliable sorce, especially the ones that are not quite "big", big meaning the famous on that thing, i mean, one member started a thread on the ferrari enzo owners and guided us all to wiki, then i started to edit my name on it, it said "Robbie - a member in SCf that owns an enzo", something like that, so its half and half, i do trust wiki sometimes, especially when our teachers tell us to go there...

hmm, I'd prefer the original, but if they're making some new model with the rear wheel drive or a new 911 then they can go ahead... but again, if they did make and release this model; i'd stick with the old one... i dont really know what these guys are up to...

no website is a reliable source; anyone can change it, make it etc, and it has to pass no regulations of reliability at all. books do, however, which is why they are a much more reliable source. try to tell M3 GTR that, though, where he gets all his 4.9-second 0-60 time for the 335i from and believes the M6 does 0-60 in 4.1 seconds... because he seen it on a site!

Its 100% true. Coincidently the C7 Corvette will be mid engined AWD turbo 6.

Not only was that car very successful it is a major part of the only motorsport division in the world that is profitable by its self.
