At last, a roadster version of the insanely expensive SLR appears to be on the way.

BY STEVE SILER, April 2007
In 1999, Mercedes-Benz teased us with not one, but two mouth-watering “Vision SLR” supercar concepts. One had a roof, the other was a convertible. The Vision SLR coupe eventually became the stupidly fast and stratospherically priced SLR McLaren coupe, which Mercedes-Benz builds with racing partner McLaren Cars. Now, a full four years into its product cycle, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren are finally giving their SLR coupe a droptop playmate, to be called the SLR McLaren roadster.

Spied in the Canary Islands on a photo shoot, this prototype of the top-secret roadster will spawn one of only a handful of droptops ever to break the 200-mph barrier and perhaps the fastest open-topped automobile ever sold in this country by a major manufacturer when it appears on our shores next year as a 2009 model.

Clear from these not-so-clear photos is that the SLR roadster appears pretty much identical to the current SLR McLaren coupe in terms of its long-nose proportions and front and rear styling. Also a given are a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and carbon-fiber body panels, just like the hardtop. A fabric top, as opposed to a folding hardtop, will be fitted in the interest of cost saving.

Less clear, however, is whether the scissors-fly doors from the coupe will appear on the roadster. Certainly, conventional front-hinged doors would be somewhat of a disappointment after the cool butterfly doors on the coupe. Don’t get us wrong, however, they would hardly prompt any one of us to kick the SLR out of our garage.

Expect little or no diminution of performance from the 617-hp, 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 with 575 pound-feet of torque that powers the SLR hardtop, which can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and touch a claimed 207 mph when given enough asphalt. We would be surprised, however, if the roadster were offered in the intensified 641-hp “722” guise like the coupe. It would be fitting, however, considering that the original No. 722, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz SLR racer that Stirling Moss drove to victory in the Mille Miglia three consecutive years, was actually a roadster.

Pricing will likely be about 10 percent higher than the $455,750 of the SLR coupe, so don’t expect much change back from your half-mil bill.

The one sonicadg posted isn't an SLR. Its a Vision concept - which never end up looking like the actual product.

yea, the Vision SLR looks pretty good, but its just not it, its too un-agressive and missing those huge gills, no, i didnt miss the letter R over there, beh, now as i could see from those pictures i posted, it looks very sexy, its got the SLR front, noting, absolutley almost nothing has changed except that the roof is gone, and im not sure how the hardtop will look on that...weird maybe, but sure sexy....two lucky guys inside that sexy car...im going to kill them

YES! This is the best news I've heard since the news of Gisele Bundchen not being pregnant. Seriously, that engine noise minus a roof = the best car of this decade, along with the GTX1 of course.

Still... I thought they were supposed to stop the prodution of the SLR in 2009, so this is probably gonna be rare as hell!

...man, why didn't they make it as a roadster in the first place?

Robbie

because they dont want their owners to fall out of the car once its braking hard? and probably stopping the smoke of those burning disc brakes getting into the compartment?

or maybe its just so simple, Mercedes went stupid

Spot on. The only thing that really stood out about the SLR was the exhaust note. The lack of a roof makes this car a lot more interesting. It doesn't look to bad, I like it.

Wow, the SLR looks great in those spy pics, way better than the Vision Concept. It looks sexier without the roof on. This is going to be exciting, i can't wait!

I totally forgot about the gullwing doors. I like them.

That would be so dam cool if MB revived the legendary SL "gullwing"!!!!!

I like it better with a roof!

Same here. It looks more "girly", or maybe that's just because it's a convertable.....

Oh, and I really hate the wheels.....

I'm waiting for more official pictures and I'm pretty sure there will be a black colour option. It will look sexy as hell.. haha..

that is not the same car, thats the Vision Concept posted by sonicadg before in this thread, and its so different from the SLR roadster, first, the "gills" in the Vision are smaller than the one on the SLR, the whole bonnet lines are different, the whole front bumper is different...just to tell you that its not what i posted...:)

That is gonna be one hell of a car. But the price increase might put buyers off. I actually photoshopped a convertible version of the SLR but I can't seem to find it.:(

Ah, much better. I never liked the lines around that car's roof, taking it off really enhances the profile.

SLR on the pictures look like SLK...it looks very small and doesnt look long.
however, SLR roadstar is available now...and it is more expensive than SLR 722.
In contrast to normal SLR or SLR roadstar, SLR 722 looks much better and more aggressiv.

The SLR Roadster is old news really, I've seen "spy shots" before, but those were just rumours... This looks pretty authentic though, it would be a nice limited run car to add to a private collection of Ford GTX1s... @ Zzono - SLR Roadsters do not exist now as far as I know, however, there is some luxury tuning company which installs SLR nose cones and front bumpers onto Mercedes SL's, making it into something like a convertible SLR. Hell, that means you could even have a convertible V12 SLR! I prefer the V8 though...
