The CLK63 Black Series is a street legal version of the Official F1 Safety Car, which borrows design and technology from the Formula One racing world. For starters, the Black Series is a 500 horsepower version of the AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine, with 0-60 mph acceleration of 4.1 seconds and an electronically limited

top speed of 186 mph.

The new Black Series model can be easily identified by its carbon-fiber flared fenders that are filled with larger, staggered-width wheels and tires. New AMG forged aluminum wheels (9 x 19 front, 9.5 x 19 rear) are shod with Pirelli P Zero Corsa sports tires (265 / 30 R 19 front, 285 / 30 R 19 rear). Larger vented and perforated composite disc brakes can be seen through the AMG wheels; front discs are 14.2 inches in diameter, with 13.0-inch discs at the rear.

Also obvious from the outside is a new front apron with carbon cooling air intakes under the front bumper and lateral air outlets in the front fenders, which feeds extra air to a larger radiator and a second transmission oil cooler. Redesigned side skirts under the doors lead to its flared rear fenders and a new rear apron with carbon-fiber air diffuser fins.

High-performance parts from the F1 Safety Car include an AMG sports exhaust, a limited-slip rear differential and a separate oil cooler for the rear final drive, which uses a thermostatically controlled cooling fan to limit temperature peaks. On the trunk lid, a carbon-fiber spoiler airflow helps reduce aerodynamic lift forces at high speed.

Black Series Adjustable Suspension

The chassis of the CLK63 AMG Black Series features adjustable suspension with new spring links, wheel carriers, thrust arms and camber and torque struts. For driving on the track, technicians can adjust the car’s ride height and also the compression and rebound characteristics of the shock dampers, as well as camber and toe-in. An extra measure of chassis stiffness during hard cornering is provided by strut braces in the engine compartment and trunk. Additionally, its ASR traction control and ESP stability control systems are specially calibrated for the demands of more intense track driving.

More Power from the AMG V8

The Black Series engine comes with completely redesigned intake and exhaust systems. Larger intake ducts, a new AMG sport exhaust with full-length twin pipes and a recalibrated engine control unit provides even swifter throttle response, not to mention its 500-horsepower.

The Black Series model is powered by the first engine designed totally by AMG. One of the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8s ever, the new engine boasts a wealth of features derived from AMG’s highly successful racing heritage. Built almost completely from a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, the 6.3-liter V8 features four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, bucket followers (rather than rocker arms) and a variable intake manifold. The engine shares no parts with Mercedes-Benz V8 engines. A first for a production engine, the cylinder bores feature a twin-wire-arc-sprayed (TWAS) coating, a new process that results in impressively low friction and running surfaces that are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinders.

Its seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission is coupled to a rear final drive that’s about six percent “shorter” for more responsive acceleration. The automatic transmission has Manual and Sport driving programs (the comfort-oriented Comfort mode isn’t included), and drivers can shift between the seven gears using aluminum shift paddles on the 14.1 inch DTM style leather steering wheel. In the Manual mode, shift times are about 20 percent faster than in Sport, with no automatic downshifting or upshifting under full load and kickdown. Only an upshift icon on the AMG main menu in the dash signals recommended gear changes.

High Performance Interior

The F1-inspired design and technology of the CLK63 AMG Black Series is carried through to its high-tech interior. This dedicated two-seater sports touring car not only dispenses with rear seats, but its bucket-type seats, rich carbon fiber interior trim and black headliner also underscore the purposeful look of a true race car. The new AMG front seats are covered in nappa leather with embroidered silver AMG logos.

Its new AMG sport steering wheel is more than a half inch (15 mm) smaller and comes with aluminum shift paddles. Carbon fiber trim on the center console and instrument cluster (also stamped with AMG logos), underscore the car’s competition roots. A specially contoured Aluminum shift lever and a new engine
“start-stop” button add further touches.

The dude piloting the thing is HOT! The car looks scared to death from the front... that's not a bad thing, it kills some of the aggressiveness. The rear-end is pure sex. The third picture makes me want to eat it alive.

Now this car is s-e-x-y. I really like the carbon fibre bits such as the spoiler and the diffuser, they make the car look hardcore. The front looks very aggressive and cool too, i think that is what gives the car it's character although it does look similar to the CLK AMG's front.

Urr Tom. Hes a guy, your a guy, those two things aren't supposed to go together..;)

Haha, thats so sig worthy, it's going straight into my sig, thanks!:)

Although thats how tom k is like i think, he even said in an F1 thread that Lewis Hamilton is hot!:D

Exactly. I love everybody. Girls and guys, cats and cars; and that dude looks like a mix of Hidetoshi Nakata and a Ford GT and Eleanor owner I know.

this thing is sexy! finally its out! YES!!!

anyways, great looking car, abit ugly in white and with the chrome rims in the first couple of pictures, but on the streets, wow! it looks great! stunning!...the carbon fibre stuff, the diffuser, the little spoiler, gosh i love it! 500hp, wow thats alot, but its basically an abit street version of the CLK DTM, though it looks so good, the interior sucks, then again, theres the automatic transmision, darn, and look at the huge steering wheel! i hate that...

I mean common, you cant just love it then hate it at the same time. The interior isn't as safe as it looks but the steering wheel is normal size for a CLK class right?

Robbie
Apr 05, 2007, 2:43 AM
yea, that is correct, but why, i mean i do hate what benz do to their interirors, i mean they put huge steering wheels in it and put paddles behind it in a place you cant see them and you could suddenly press it without yourself knowing it, and the most hating thing, all things are automatic, i dont want tip tronic, in a thing like that, manual is the best for it, to me it just is

Never have I seen such a SEXY CAR! This alone gives me new respect for Benz design. Lately I havn't really seen any Merc designs as inspirational or beautiful. but this.....

Well, my cousin owns one of those AMG (not this one) and the interior was as comfortable as the Porsche Turbo, but from the looks at the pics above, the black interior kinda suk (just like what Robbie said)

but its not that good enough still, i like the CF trim, the steering wheel i could see is abit good at gripping and holding it, it looks kind of more sporty, its better, but i still hate that 4 spoke steering wheel and the auto transmision

wow. i can't say anything other than i love it. that car i think will simply be amazing. i love the subtle body kit and especially the rear diffuser. i can only dream of ever affording a car like this.

just one question. why is the "black" series white?

just one question. why is the "black" series white?

I had the same question....

Never the less, It sounds like a promising vehicle.

I generally dont like subtle bodykits but this looks ok.

Not a fan of the carbon fiber dash insert, My dad's Satria has the same thing and over time they dont look that good.

If they wanted it to be MORE in touch with F1, instad of having the start up button, they should have made it startable only via an external starter like in F1 :D

But yes, very nice. The safety car howls like a humongous beast that has eaten a huge beast and both are howling together. For some reason I think the rear would look better if the exhaust ends were more square shaped.

just one question. why is the "black" series white?

good point there, but is it the interior that they are talking about? or maybe its just the carbon stuff that they call it black

looks very nice , although i'll still opt to go for the limite DTM version ;)

Robbie
Apr 05, 2007, 6:17 AM
^ but they made another CLK DTM thing, with different stuff, so the DTM is limited and not like the others where more was made for other people, and i think its this one

S-Tune_S1
Apr 05, 2007, 6:23 AM
which is why i said i'de rather have the CLK DTM ,, only 100 made ,, race like interior , supercharged V8 ;)

I have been rather mixed in my feelings towards this car, but from the latest pictures posted I think it looks quite good. I still hope for a 'Signature' version of the car however this will be O.K for now.

I think I prefer the looks of the CL65 Limited Edition on balance however, and would probably take one over this car. It is good to see MB/AMG making an effort to make their cars more stylish which is something that has been missing from their cars for years.

As far as the Black Series business is concerned I don't think there is any particular significance, apart from the fact MB/AMG are trying to improve the desirability of their cars. Black is a 'cool' colour and has a ring of the absolute best about it, a bit the American Express Black Card which is the absolute pinnacle of their credit cards. MB/AMG want to exploit the Ultra Luxury niche that exists in the market, and about time as well. As somebody else in another comments section put it "MB have finally caught on to what bling is all about" despite it being a long time coming.

I love the car!! Just more art from the Merc and AMG group!! They need to make another a black version!!

Carbon fibre is black, this car features a fair amount of introduced carbon fibre, the interior is as black as it can get, hence 'Black Series'.

Change the front bumper, paint it in black and you have yourself an utterly desirable car. I was thinking of something a little more mad, to be brutually honest. And that limited top-speed seems to be ruining the AMG guy's work. Still, a pretty mad car, could have been madder though, although I do like it a lot.

AB-SO-FU*CKING-LOUTLY AMAZING!

I am in love....I love its styling and those carbon fiber accents on the front of the bumper. Lets not even get started on the rear diffuser, its just amazing. Its a 2 door, loud as hell, and when all those windows are rolled down can make for a great cruising car. Roll them up and you can get pinned like playboy centerfold to a high school boys locker. This is why I love Mercedes-Benz and AMG.

I mean really....just look at the thing. If you dont like that car, I just cant understand.

Someone might of said this, but is there a reason for the odd looking diffuser? i mean, its usually open, not all covered up. idk.
or is there something behind it

Considering you had other members thinking the same think, I thought my post would go some way of clearing it up, or is helping out a general no-no in your book?

I don't like it, it's far too chunky, too over the top. It's really wide, the exhausts look a bit, well, stupid, I think it looks bad in white. The front looks okay, but the back is a bit, ugly. The interior also looks pretty basic.
