lol... That's the Elapsed Time for a 1/4 mile run. I'm a drag racer, everyone here knows that. I can tell you that you do NOT take an 1100 horsepower car down a drag strip and remember the exact trap speed but not the elapsed time... or at least close to it. Not only that but I think he's getting the class mixed up. Pro Street cars don't usually run that much horsepower. 1100 at the rear wheels is a whole lot off the crank. lol

3rd, Im not into drag racing that much so if i got the class wrong im sorry.
4th, again it could have been flywheel HorsepowerI am in no way calling you a liar, remember that. Remember though that we hear a lot of stuff here that's obvious BS. Let me tell you why what you said sounds unlikely... remember that I'm not saying you're lying just questioning a couple things as a drag racer...
1) 116 is generally used for Pro Stock cars and engines with 15:1 and higher compression ratios... It's a rare fuel in the amateur classes...
2) 4 years ago and you can't remember the et but you can remember the exact 176 mile per hour? Look at how that sounds from our point of view.
3) I'm not saying the class was wrong but generally cars with that much power are registered as Super Comp or full Comp cars. Pro Street cars are nowhere NEAR street legal anymore and usually aren't nitrous injected unless they're four bangers.
4) That's understandable.
Now, here's what makes it strange, to me at least. I've been drag racing since I was a kid. I currently race a 99 Monte Carlo Super Gas car (there's pics floating around the forum but if you'd like to see some I'll post a couple again) and a somewhat sorta street legal bike. Super Gas is a 9.90 index and my car traps at 151 or 152 mph, depending on the track. I know how hard it is to drive a car like that and that's on a delay box with throttle stops. Off the stops I can get deep into the 8's at around 160. That's extremely hard to handle because it's a full power launch and shift. A 176 trap speed in a car like that is a sub 8 second run. For someone who's not into drag racing and has no drag racing experience to jump into a 176 mph car for his first run is insane.
That's all...
Other than that welcome to the forum... glad to have you here...
I understand what your saying. Im starting think Im wrong about the speed. For some reason the number 176 is the frist number that comes to me when i talk about it. Im going to ask my dad for the time slip (if he still has it) and Ill scan it in cuz now Im all confused.
PS: I have done a little drag racing. I have taken my truck to the strip a couple of times but its not my favorite thing

Ok so I talked to my dad and I asked him about it. He laughed at me when I told him that I said 176mph. He then showed me the time slip.
1.76 60ft time
10.9@121mph
The HP was 1100 on C16 fuel????? and it was on the flywheel.
forgot to ask him about the class though
Ooh, let me add...
I went 125mph (on my speedo, doesn't mean it's right!) in my (stock) 1987 325is. I've got speed rated Yokohoma tires (88H, for 130mph FYI). I believe it's transmission limited. I believe it's 4500ish rpm in final gear. It hits a wall around there and stops accelerating. I have a feeling my car could push 130 if I get a Dinan chip, if it's the case of a governor or RPM limit.
Have you guys heard of a governor in 1987 BMW?
I have also done 130mph in my friend's 1.8T Jetta 2001. That was exhilirating (sp?). I stopped there, it's not nice of a friend to hold the top speed and not the driver of the car.

I went 100 yesterday in my car only because I was running a little later than I had planned to a club meeting that goes on for the end of the quarter (but it didn't really matter since it ran from 12:00pm - 10:00pm). Also, I think the frustration that I was following vehicles doing like 55 or 60 going uphill ticked me into slamming the gas and going into the fast lane and just go like a bat out of hell. But I eventually slowed back down since I had to get off the freeway a little bit after the short sprint.

Speeddemon350
Dec 24, 2007, 5:17 PM
^^Well for auto trannies when your in ice and you here the wheels spinning, it can give you a sense of what gear its on, and tell you whether or not you need to let go of the gas or push it more. For example when my dad gets our little camry up our steep driveway, he most of the time tries to keep it in first, or just keeps it in "l", so the tires don't spin to much, because if they did it tends to be more difficult to get the car up the driveway. Plus it also helps save the tread some lol.

Dec 25, 2007, 5:28 AM
Yeah in my Jetta if I turn off the traction control and stuff and am on snow and/or ice and floor it the speedometer will read anywhere from 80 to 115. But if I keep the traction control on it won't do that.

I always wondered how that works, thought it had like... some censor in the wheels thats super uber like ATTESA or something...
Or a little thingy on the hood thats like "OMG I FEEL TEH WIND GOING 4298748392748932MPH WE GOIN THAT FAST WHOO!"
Or... The rear axle
Or... it just hooked up to the wheels that don't drive the car.
Anyways, when was the transmission thing started? Because I'm guessing this corvettes probably a 1995 Vette, and its Speedo hits 138MPH in the burnout. So was this recent? Or was that to keep the price down in the vette?

Keep the price down? No... Hooking the speedometer up to the transmission is the more expensive and most accurate way to run a speedo...
But wouldn't you have to shift up a gear or two for the axle to be spinning that fast? Or horribly over rev the engine. In an automatic it wouldn't matter. Sometime when you're bored (if your speedo's hooked up to the tranny) put your car on jackstands, put it in first, and slowly give it gas. See how high the speedometer goes while the rpms rise. Remember, with no traction there's no resistance.

But the numbers he was saying were on the ground, where my guess would be that very few cars have enough torque to do a burnout in a gear high enough to let the axle/wheels reach speeds over 100mph.
Car_buff
Dec 29, 2007, 9:45 PM
^^ with an auto transmission the torque can be multiplied to be more than what the vehicle actually has.
if you raise the rpm's very quickly the torque converter delays a split second, during the split second extra pressure is built and it converts more torque than the engine has, thus the vehicle may only produce 350 ft lbs of torque, and normally under no curcumstances would be able to spin out in high gear, but with an auto tranny, if your just cruising, and then literally stomp on your pedal, you culd theoritcally produce hundreds more ft pounds. from what I know, as much as twice as much torque as the engine poduces.

120MPH is near the top speed of the average rally car, since rallies do not usually have mega-long straights. Oh, and, the Corolla GTS/Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX not a drift car, it's a good base for a drift car. ONLY the RWD Corolla's are drift worthy, which should be obvious as drift cars are almost always RWD...
I went almost 30MPH on my mountain bike some years ago, and that's freaking fast for a bike!!!!

I don't think the speed 3 will hit 153. You have to understand that just because the needle on the speedometer reads 153 or 155 it does not mean you are actually going that fast. they are usually off. On the mini they are off by what i call the 9% rule meaning. if your doing 100 your really going 91. I know the speed3 speedometer is also off I just do not know by how much. My brother doesn't really let me play with his car that much.

If the GPS stopped reading at 127, how did you figure 153 exactly?
Inspired guess maybe?

I don't think the speed 3 will hit 153. You have to understand that just because the needle on the speedometer reads 153 or 155 it does not mean you are actually going that fast. they are usually off. On the mini they are off by what i call the 9% rule meaning. if your doing 100 your really going 91. I know the speed3 speedometer is also off I just do not know by how much. My brother doesn't really let me play with his car that much.
mazda quotes top speed for the speed3 as electronically limited to 155mph........

yeah but the mini is also limited at that, and the most i have been able to get out of it was 140, drafting a golf Gti.... so my point still stands.
