The only reason you have higher gears is to improve fuel consumption. Why would you shift? Think about that. The engine just keeps going. And since higher revs ALWAYS = more power, the higher you rev it the more fastest you go.

Hey guys i posted something about 5 pages ago but lol people thinking i have mods in my engine, now I do yea but when i hit the 140+ mph on my tiburon it was completely stock, the guage top's at 160mph and it's a 6 speed so if i has a 5 speed it prob be alittle hard to pass 135 but given the extra gear and a straight road i was on i hit that mark no problem, im pretty sure i could have gone faster but there was a curve and i did not wanna take a chance of flying off the highway lol :)

As monkey said the Silverados are governed at 115.. at which point the engine holds that RPM and will not let you accelerate. Coasting down hill in neutral? The CoD on that truck alone would not let you coast to 123 down a hill.. so I guess you were free falling?

The 2.7 liter GT is electronically limited to 132 and the 2.7 liter SE 6 speed will do 142. Those are stock figures. One other source reports the SE at 137. The two tests were probably done at different altitudes. I'm not totally sure about it because I never topped mine out before I put the intake and exhaust on it. I swapped out the plugs and plug wires and had it reprogrammed.

Well tonight I was driving with a friend alone (I dont have my license) and I felt like going fast :)

So I went on the nearest highway (speed limit 55)

First time I hit 85, which was still the fastest I had ever went (it was 76 before) but there was a lot of traffic at the time. So after getting off and then going in the opposite direction I got to about 98 (lets just say 100). Then on my third attempt going the same way as the first time attempt I got to the fastest I will probably go in quite some time.

119 mph.

I was in my moms 2006 Volkswagen Jetta.

anyways staying with the threads direction, I took the Honda out today for a spin and well could not resist my self, took it out to Alligator alley which is like next to my house. (for those of you who do not know this road, its the highway that takes you from Weston FL, to the west of Florida. Long strength of road with nothing except the occasional alligator and recently Pythons)

anyways managed to get the bike up to 171mph. Interesting feeling at that speed, you kinda open a leg and the bike begins to turn. You can really feel how wind resistance acts on an object. And thats the last time I try that out, back to being scared of the bike.

Last weekend i was riding my bike on my local "track", wich is a 7 turn, ultranarrow-superscary-megadusty track, with a 900 meter main straight, and some friend of my dad brought a laser thingy to measure speed, acceleration and braking.
I was so scared to take my ZX beyond 110 on that track and even so i was one of the riders with the highest speeds on the main straight, but when my father installed the thingy on my bike, i realized how wrong i was before.

When my bike speedometer was showing 110 MPH, the laser thing was showing 102 MPH, and my bike has OEM tire sizes, so we tried the same on my dad's KTM Duke, and it was the same story. The Duke was showing 90mph, and the laser was at 83-84 i think, so i borrowed the laser thing to test it on a real straight, just to see how wrong was i when took my bike at 145 mph about a year and a half before.

So i went to te best mountain road i know and started riding and enjoying the road on my way to a 2 and a half straigth that is parallel to the international airport, and when i got there, i just slammed the throttle, got in a more aerodynamic position and started to gain speed at a ridiculous rate.
150mph finally came before i started braking for my life, and when i looked at the laser meter, it was showing just 144mph!!!!
I felt a little dissapointed, but i surely was faster than teh last time i did such stupidity...

So now my "official" max speed on land is 144mph.

Ok.. so something strange happened tonight. When I was on the previous road I could've sworn I got to 115 no problem then just braked.. well, tonight I was on an empty highway driving to a football game next to this RX7 with a 350Z out front. I put it in 4th and floor it, and get up to about 100 and slow down because a car full of girls was following me.

Then I hear the 350Z come up and floor it and go past in the left lane.. well I floor it again too and stay right on his tail, well I hit 110 or so (hard to read) and the headlights flash and ABS light comes on.. I let off assuming its the governor. The Z keeps going and then the RX7 flies by at what I found out to be 130.. he was a cool guy.. not a stock '7 or Z. The Z had a-pillar guages from what I could tell and at least an exhaust.

Anyway, I thought it was strange. I've driven around that area before, I must've just missed the governor. Monkey, do you know anything about a governor in a Z28? Maybe my car is wired wrong? lol At least I got to mess around with two nice cars. ;)

I got it answered over on Z28.com.. Apparently when Z28's don't come with Z rated tires from the factory they slap on a 110 mph governor. I'm sure I just need to find out what the wire is on the PCM and pull it along with the skip shift light and solenoid. ;)

ive driven 168mph, on a test track with my brothers aston, i was loving it, i have a focus st and ive got thet to 110 and had to break and nver really gone that fast again coz it kills the fuel

For that matter, I got to 140 (highest yet) in the Supra saturday, overtaking a Mazda 121 while heading north on a country road. Made it as far as yanchep before I decided it was sufficiently cooked, then we had to wander around for a few hours while it cooled off so we could go home.

One of the scariest things you can go through in a vehicle without crashing is popping the chutes after a Top Fuel run... I'd love to do that in a current 350 mph rail.

I don't know the rules here.ANY CAR that is capable of running quicker than 9.99 (my car can run 8's) and/or faster than 150 (I can run quite a bit faster than that flat out) HAS TO HAVE a parachute. I've only used it once because I broke a linkage cable and floored my brake pedal. I still ended up in the sand. lol. If I didn't have that chute I would've hit the sand trap at over 140...

Then when they did everyone said there's NO WAY they can break into the 4's. They're saying the same thing about the 3's but it will happen...

I've been 115mph in a Vauxhall Nova. That's some scary stuff right there, as the manual says its top speed is 98mph....

Nobody's slowing Top Fuel down. There's no reason. F1 is regulated for the same reason NASCAR is... it's dangerous. Besides, you don't get your eyeballs pulled out under acceleration. Not only that, it's a myth that your eyeballs can pop out under deceleration. The retinas can detach but that does not 'pop' your eyeballs out. lol

I know I'll sound like a complete idiot here, but, if there's these problems of detached retinas and such, why don't they just make the slow down strip longer ?

It's not a matter of taking a longer area to slow down. It's also not something that happens a lot, or even much at all. If it did we'd have a bunch of blind drag racers.

The deceleration g forces are caused by the parachutes deploying. There's really no way to slow them down slower.

You could have longer strips and use smaller chutes so the braking isn't so hard.

The parachute design is actually more high-tech that you think. They're designed to take into consideration the weight of the vehicle and the speed at which they're deployed. Making them smaller would make them not work right...

Could you put small holes in them to eliminate some drag? I'm sure there's some way of doing it.
